What The Hell Is This?
Jet magazine called him "one of rhythm & blues' most influential musicians." With a career spanning 40 years, Johnny "Guitar" Watson had success in the blues, R&B, and jazz fields. But his commercial and artistic apex came with his late '70s and early '80s funk recordings.
Shout! Factory is proud to continue its restoration of his catalog with more deluxe editions of his classic funk albums. 1979's What The Hell Is This? continued Watson's run of successful funk records, spawning an R&B hit with the title track. As ever, Johnny played everything but drums and horns himself. Highlights include the Percy Mayfield co-write "I Don't Want To Be President," as well as the previously unreleased bonus tracks, including the forward-looking "Watsonian Institute."
