SHOUT! FACTORY CELEBRATES COUNTRY ICON MERLE HAGGARD WITH NEW DVD "LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES": 11/11/2008

Los Angeles, CA – A collection that spans three decades of rarely seen performances of Merle Haggard will now be available for the first time on DVD, on Merle Haggard Legendary Performances, out November 11 via Shout! Factory and the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum.

Archived by the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum, Merle Haggard Legendary Performances features his hits through a chronology of vintage live performances such as “Mama Tried” (Billy Walker’s Country Carnival, 1968), “Okie From Muskogee” (The Porter Wagoner Show, 1970), and “Branded Man” (Country Music Holiday, 1968), and includes appearances by Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

Born in Bakersfield, California, in 1937 to parents who had moved from Oklahoma during the Great Depression, Haggard started playing guitar at the age of 12, inspired by artists such as Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Wills and, later, Lefty Frizzell. After serving time in San Quentin, Haggard left prison in 1960 and emerged as a star of the Bakersfield country scene. His songwriting depicted the truths of a tough life, which he fused with a musical style derived from hardcore country, jazz, blues and folk to create a sound no one had ever heard, and lyrics many could relate to.

Haggard has since gone on to become one of the most important country artists of all time, achieving 38 #1 hits to date, and influencing scores of artists who have come after him. From the walls of San Quentin, to his free-spirited life as an irreverent and unique voice outside the Nashville establishment, to his induction in the Country Music Hall of Fame, there is no doubt Merle Haggard is country’s original outlaw. Merle continues to be as relevant and inspiring an artist as ever and has select U.S. tour dates scheduled this fall.

A special partnership between Shout! Factory and the Country Music Hall Of Fame® And Museum allows the label to create DVD collections culled from multiple broadcast and cable television shows archived in the Museum. Merle Haggard Legendary Performances is the third DVD in the Legendary Performances line, which includes Tammy Wynette Legendary Performances and Marty Robbins Legendary Performances, released on DVD earlier this year. Other releases available through the partnership include The Johnny Cash Christmas Special 1976 and 1977, which were released in 2007, and October 7, 2008, will see the release of The Johnny Cash Christmas Special 1978 and 1979, as well as a box set featuring all four titles.
