Shout! Factory to Celebrate Americana Icons Buddy Miller, Tom Russell, and Dave Alvin with Newly Produced Compilations : 10/28/2008 |

Los Angeles, CA – Three exciting new compilations honoring Americana icons Buddy Miller, Tom Russell, and Dave Alvin will be in stores on October 28. Co-produced by the artists, these projects were born out of Shout! Factory’s 2008 acquisition of HighTone Records.
Veterans Day: The Tom Russell Anthology is a 2-disc set produced by Tom Russell and Shout! Factory’s David McLees that includes a 24-page booklet featuring photos, Russell’s art, and an essay by Mike Regenstreif. Anthology contains 2 previously unreleased songs, “Dark Angel,” (acoustic version), and a new recording titled “Roll The Credits,” as well as songs from 19 of his albums including “Navajo Rug,” “Big Water,” with Iris Dement, “One And One” with Shawn Colvin, recorded about four years before her debut album, 4 songs co-written with Dave Alvin, and of course, “Veteran’s Day,” a song about an American POW once powerfully covered by Johnny Cash.
Born in Los Angeles in 1953, the masterful songwriter now lives on the El Paso-Juarez border. Raised on the American West’s cowboy music, Russell’s musical style emerged as a mix of this as well as country, Tex-Mex and folk. Russell has recorded 25 albums and his songs have been covered by artists such as Johnny Cash, Nancy Griffith, Joe Ely, k.d. Lang, Suzy Bogguss, and Ramblin´ Jack Elliott. Tom Russell, who along with Dave Alvin was a pioneer of the Americana radio format, has received awards from ASCAP, CMA, and Folk Alliance, among others. Russell has appeared on “The Late Show With David Letterman” four times in the last few years.
In addition to his songwriting career, Russell has lived a fascinating life. He has published three books, is an established painter, earned a Master´s Degree in Criminology from the University of California and taught school in Nigeria during the Biafran war.
Buddy Miller: The Best Of The Hightone Years, a new compilation produced by Buddy Miller and Shout! Factory’s Derek Dressler, features 16 tracks from 5 different Buddy Miller albums, starting with 1995 debut Your Love And Other Lies, 1997’s Poison Love, 1999’s Cruel Moon (the year Miller was named Guitarist of the Year at Nashville Music Awards), 2001’s Buddy & Julie Miller, which earned a Grammy® nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and 2002’s Midnight And Lonesome. Buddy Miller: The Best Of The Hightone Years features Miller classics such as “My Love Will Follow You,” “Does My Ring Burn Your Finger,” “The River’s Gonna Run (Buddy & Julie Miller),” “That’s How I Got To Memphis,” and “Hole In My Head.”
Miller’s songs have been covered by the Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack and Brooks & Dunn, and he has produced artists such as Solomon Burke (Nashville / Shout! Factory), Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Allison Moorer. This revered performer, who has played guitar with Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Patty Griffin, recently toured with Alison Krauss & Robert Plant. The Americana Music Association named Miller their Instrumentalist of the Year in 2007, and in 2008 No Depression magazine hailed him as the Artist of the Decade. As longtime friend and collaborator Jim Lauderdale asserts, “Buddy has earned his place standing alongside music’s finest artists.”
Dave Alvin: The Best Of The Hightone Years, co-produced by Dave Alvin, Nancy Sefton and Derek Dressler, features tracks from several of Alvin’s HighTone albums, a letter from HighTone co-founder Bruce Bromberg, and notes from the artist himself. This new collection will delight fans and collector’s with unreleased studio versions of “Dry River,” which has been covered by other artists, including James McMurtry, and “Out In California,” an unreleased blues song called “Dixie Highway Blues” that was written for his Blackjack David album, a live performance of “Why Did She Stay With Him,” a song only previously available on a limited-edition CD called Outtakes In California, and a duet Alvin did with Katy Moffatt of the folk music chestnut “The Cuckoo,” from Katy's Loose Diamond CD that Alvin produced.
Born in Southern California, Alvin got his start in the roots rock band The Blasters, finding fans in the emerging punk rock scene and often sharing a bill with X. After leaving the band Alvin launched a solo career and a couple of years later found a nurturing home in HighTone where he never had to explain himself musically. Alvin, who won a Grammy® Award in 2001, has a show on XM Radio’s X Country station, and has produced other artists such as Chris Gaffney, Tom Russell, Christy McWilson, Sonny Burgess and Big Sandy And The Fly-Rite Boys.
