JENNIFER WARNES: FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT: 5/17/2007

Los Angeles, CA – Shout! Factory is set to release the new 20th Anniversary Edition of Jennifer Warnes’ Famous Blue Raincoat.

On Famous Blue Raincoat: The Songs of Leonard Cohen, as it was originally titled for its 1987 release, Jennifer Warnes rearranged and reinterpreted some of Leonard Cohen’s greatest songs in a rare and unique audiophile quality production that has now, after two decades, found a permanent place in the history of interpretive music and remains the ultimate tribute to Cohen’s music.

The 1987 album was greeted with rave reviews, and made numerous year-end best-of lists. This new reissue contains four previously unreleased songs from Warnes’ personal archives, including a 1992 live performance for 20,000 fans in Belgium, and a 24-page deluxe booklet with rare photos of the friendships that gave birth to this remarkable work.

Best known for such pop hits as the Oscar- and Grammy-winning duets “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” with Bill Medley, from the film Dirty Dancing, and “Up Where We Belong,” with Joe Cocker, from the film An Officer and a Gentleman, Jennifer Warnes holds the record for singing the most Oscar-nominated songs in the history of the Oscars. However, it is this tribute to a fellow artist that remains her best work.

Through the voice of a woman, we learned to understand Leonard Cohen more deeply, and through the words of a poet, we heard the heart of Jennifer Warnes more clearly. With this anniversary edition we are reminded again of the depth and value of the two artists' friendship that has spanned more than 35 years.

Digitally recorded and remastered from the original analog tapes, the 20th Anniversary Edition of Famous Blue Raincoat continues to be the best of the very best: songwriting, interpretative genius, sonic excellence, and musical beauty—65 minutes of the ultimate “Jenny Sings Lenny” and every moment a priceless gem. Placed alongside Ella Sings Gershwin and Lotte Lenya Sings Kurt Weill, the 20th Anniversary Edition of Famous Blue Raincoat holds its own, uniquely representative of its own era, and after 20 years, an essential addition to any music lover’s archives.

Famous Blue Raincoat includes the beautiful ballad “Song of Bernadette,” a Warnes/Cohen collaboration that has been covered by Aaron Neville, Bette Midler, Linda Ronstadt, Judy Collins, and Anne Murray, among others. The driving “First We Take Manhattan,” features Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar, one of only a few times he appeared on another artist’s recording. “Bird on a Wire,” a longstanding choice cut among audiophiles, mixed by George Massenburg, is also included here.

The original content, critically acclaimed and out of print domestically for many years, was widely recognized for its technologically advanced engineering. This long-awaited and much-sought-after 20th Anniversary Edition of Famous Blue Raincoat will be available on Shout! Factory on August 7th 2007.
