JOHN LEE HOOKER: BOOM BOOM & CHILL OUT: 11/27/2006

LOS ANGELES, CA – On February 6, 2007, Shout! Factory begins a reissue campaign of a decade’s worth of music from John Lee Hooker, master bluesman and undisputed father of boogie. The first releases are Boom Boom and Chill Out, both from the 1990s. Each album includes previously unreleased studio outtakes, as well as new liner notes by music journalist Jas Obrecht (Rolling Stone.)

Hooker was 72 years old in 1992, when he recorded Boom Boom which features a few trusted sidemen and guest artists, such as Robert Cray, Albert Collins, Charlie Musselwhite and John Hammond. His goal was to reprise some of his earlier classics like 1961’s “Boom Boom,” and 1952’s “Sugar Mama,” one of the albums deepest tracks. “A lot of that stuff, I did a long, long time ago,” he said during the sessions. “The kids never heard some of the classics, so I did it over. I always did want to do it that way. Just me and my band and some friends doing songs like ‘Sugar Mama’ and ‘Boom Boom.’” Previously unreleased bonus tracks on Boom Boom are “Dimples,” and “Ain’t No Love In This House.”

The Grammy® Award-winning album Chill Out, which features the famous “One Bourbon, One Scotch And One Beer,” was originally released in 1995 and lives up to its title with a relaxed, blues-rock feel. Carlos Santana’s signature guitar sound can be heard on the title track, blues pianist and singer Charles Brown sits in on “Kiddio” and “Annie Mae,” and Hooker’s longtime friend Van Morrison brings wrenching vocals to “Serves Me Right To Suffer/Syndicator.” The haunting quality heard on stand-out tracks “Tupelo,” “Woman On My Mind” and “Deep Blue Sea” is the result of Hooker “unplugged,” alone with an acoustic guitar. Previously unreleased tracks featured on Chill Out are “Down So Low” and “Fire Down Below.”

Four-time GRAMMY® winner John Lee Hooker was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1917. He first gained national attention in 1948, when he recorded “Boogie Chillen’,” which stormed its way to #1 on the R&B charts. Hooker’s career continued with many more successful albums and singles including “I Love You Honey,” “No Shoes” and “Boom Boom,” the latter of which spent time on the Billboard pop chart as well as the R&B chart. Hooker was a true blues superstar, recording albums with Modern, Chess, MCA, ABC, Fantasy and many other labels. Before his death in 2001, he enjoyed a career renaissance, recording GRAMMY® winning albums and earning induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
