Shout! Popcast #19 – Herb Alpert - Rise

After a meteoric rise to fame as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, Herb Alpert’s star had faded a bit as he turned his attention to running Indie stalwart, A&M Records with Jerry Moss…that is until 1979, when he released Rise, which became the biggest hit of his career. Climbing to number one on the Billboard charts, the smooth and sultry Rise was a huge hit on the dance floor and on radio across the nation. Rise re-established Herb as a mainstream artist and introduced him to a whole new legion of fans.

I can’t begin to thank you guys for re-releasing this album! I am 34 years old, and I’ve been a Herb Alpert fan — specifically RISE — since I was six years old and my dad came home with the LP. That LP is scratched and warped and miles away now. And my head was in a different place when it was first released on CD, so I missed it… When I tried to track it down as an adult, all I could find was imports of dubious origin at ridiculous prices. “Rise” and “Rotation” could be garnered from the web, but that’s it. Now, thanks to Shout Factory, I have a pristine copy of this artifact of my childhood. What a trip down memory lane, and what nostalgia every dulcet tone of Alpert’s horn invokes! Thanks, guys!!
