Gamera MST3K Set.

Search Forums:

Hey B Ward, I have some questions for you!

So with this pending box set in the works, a lot of people are going to be asking about the KTMA versions of these episodes. An obvious given is that the episodes that will be released will be the Comedy Central versions of the episodes. However, is there any consideration of the KTMA material?

Personally, I am not so much interested in the difference in riffing between one version or the other, I'm curious about the host segments. Would you guys be doing something similar as you did with Night of the Blood Beast wherein you did the Turkey Day special and the broadcast versions the host segments as a viewable option? Or at least have them as a feature?

Also, if this box set is a commercial success do you think we can start holding our breaths for a similar Godzilla release? Or is that still in the realm of faint hopes?

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

I wouldnt call it a position per se - more or less an opportunity to write a review about it by someone who liked my reviews elsewhere...
I will say no more

Perhaps he's in a position to get an advance copy for review purposes.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Where'd you find it?

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

The opening theme for Season 2 to Season 5 eps 0501-0512 have a shot of Godzilla during the "He'll have to sit and watch them all..." part. Clearly, this hasn't been a problem, so I'm not too worried about it now.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

I don't Think any of the Gamera films had Godzilla Footage in the openings.

Does Toho know about the Godzilla footage in one of the openings?

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Let's not say anything.  I think that'd be best.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

I ordered mine before the postcards too! I would like them as well...

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

And if they include another stress ball with XXII, that'll make three, and we can juggle!!!

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

I already pre ordered this before the post cards were announced, will I still get them?

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Just pre-ordered my Gamera set! Excited about a new tin - and another stress ball!!!

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

I think that, even if they didn't include the KTMA eps with the Season 3 releases, it would be cool to release them as a separate set, maybe even to start an 'Origins' series of DVD sets of all-KTMA releases.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

I've said it before, and I'll restate it:  if anything could make this set better, it would be throwing the KTMA episodes on there as well.  I know it's a lot to ask of Best Brains, but let's be honest:  nobody ever expected the Gamera films to make it to DVDs MSTed, and this is a special occasion.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

While it's still very early to discuss the Gamera set. I have a few questions and ideas. I read somewhere that the Shout Select DVDs are only going to have a few hundred copies produced. If true, then maybe there is a possibility to release the KTMA Gamera episodes that way? I understand some of the obsticles involved. Jim and Joel are very hesitant on releasing them. Also, I'm not sure how much it would cost to produce those versions in limited release. If a poll was taken for the hardcore fans who would buy them, I'm not sure how many "Yehs" it would take to outweigh the cost. I would also have to guess that hardcore fans may also have to pay higher for them. I can't speak for everyone, but I wouldn't have a problem paying more for the KTMA singles. Would any of these ideas be helpful?

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

There is a ton of potential for the Gamera set those "could be" ideas should be 'should be & oughta be'
Being a fan of both the MST and non MST versions of Gamera I would love to be part of the set as a bonus feature , but Im not an insider, just a fan, hobbyist (for 3 decades)..there are a lot of MST titles I get the best of both worlds (most the 3rd season)
Hey Brian if you want a long time fan's perspective for the Gamera set , think of me ! :)

"As for bonus material, I'm still working on XX."

>> And we're very much looking forward to it.

"We really only announced XXI because it was Turkey Day and we wanted to give the fans something to get excited over."

>> I would say you succeeded given the barrage of questions here. I won't add to that, I'll just say "thanks" and that me and my family are really looking forward to the Gamerdamerung being unleashed out our home when the all-Gamera Volume XXI is released.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

To be decided in Mid July(or not). In this corner, weighing in at over 20 tons. The gargantuan friend to all children, Gamera. And in this corner weighing in at... Some amount of pounds. The people who poke fun at forgotten movies, MST3k.

"I want a good clean fight. No jokes about turtles on their backsides, no sub-par accrobatics. When you hear the bell come out with your best material, AND FIGHT!!!!!"

I think there has to be a 5 part documentary about Gamera and MST3K.

Part 1: could be about the making of the Gamera Movies.

Part 2: could be about Gamera on KTMA.

Part 3: Could be about Re-liscensing the films for comedy central.

Part 4: Could be about Sandy Frank Rumors, sketch writing and other odd ends.

Part 5: Could be about each individual Gamera Film

Interviews with Some of the MST cast, Japanese Film Historians, Original actors, and mabye even Mr. Sandy Frank.

This is all a sugestion, and early sugestion at that, but you deffinatly have to do some type of interviews for that set. There's probably some rule that says anything we post becomes property of shout factory. But if there isn't, I release these ideas to shout factory in case they want to use them.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Gamera IS friend of all children.

Do you really want all children hating MST3K if it managed to defeat Gamera?

I know there's no such thing as bad press... but really. Think about it.

We don't need a letter writing campaign.  They don't do letter writing campaigns there (unless some silly battle monster show is in danger of cancellation and parents would have to listen to their 4-27 year olds whine about it).

What we really need are... NINJAS!!

I bet they understand ninja, dang it!!

Who would win, Gamera or MST3K?

... I'm thinking of getting a letter-writing campaign going to get Toho to license Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster and Godzilla vs. Megalon. As a die-hard Godzilla fan and dedicated MSTie, I simply can't stand that Toho is at the bottom of the likelihood for licensing list; they're just shooting themselves in the foot by holding out. Who's with me?

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Does Sandy Frank really own anything anymore that was on MST3K?  I thought all the rights reverted to their original copyright holders in Japan, negating anything he had to do with them.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

I agree that people are applying Western sensibilities to an Eastern culture.  The Japanese have a way different opinion on these things than we do and I don't think a letter writing campaign from the other side of the world will change their minds in allowing a country to release--not their icon, mind you--but a show mocking their icon.  To any degree.

Once again, it should be noted--because I keep seeing this--that neither the Japanese license holder nor Sandy Frank had anything directly to do with our ability to release these episodes.  I see a lot of folks suggesting that because we are releasing Gamera, perhaps we can release other Sandy Frank properties.  We absolutely can...if he doesn't own the movies, like in the case of Gamera.

If you want to see the Godzilla episodes of MST3K released, an American company has to gain control of Godzilla in the United States.  Not simply license the property to release the DVDs/Blu-rays.  We can't go to Sony and get their permission.  They don't have that authority.  And until a company does, I'm afraid Godzilla's out of the question.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

This is something no one seem to comprehend. It doesn't matter to what extent the charachter was mocked. He was still the butt of the joke. The Japanese don't take kindly. Added on the fact that it's not even staring godzilla. It's staring Joel and the Bots. Why would they give permission? 5000 dollars (If we're lucky) They've already made that much money in the time it's taken to type this. Unless another Gamera situation a rises (I.E. sony subliscences to a smaller american corperation) it's just not gonna happen.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Yeah, I agree, Joel & the Bots are quite lenient on Godzilla in episode 212--the only character that seems to get a harsh riffing is the annoying kid ("Bye bye!"  "Shut up!!")

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Who would win, Gamera or MST3K?

Interesting, Brian...you never directly answered the question about the KTMAs...does this mean there's a spark of hope?

Honestly...has Toho even watched the Godzilla episodes? In Godzilla vs. Megalon, Joel and the Bots clearly know who they're talking about, and the whole thing comes off as loving as it does irreverent. In fact, they seem downright respectful of Godzilla, if not the movie itself. In fact, the jokes and everything actually made the film better, by filling in all the dull spots that marred an otherwise so-bad-its-great film from perfection. If I made a movie in a franchise that was riff-worthy, that's the treatment I'd want it to get!

I'm thinking of getting a letter-writing campaign going to get Toho to license Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster and Godzilla vs. Megalon. RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

That just means I have a reason to live for half a year more :^)

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

So Volume 20 with Master Ninja would be Feb/March with the SF Select releases and Gamera vs MST3K would be July ?
Sounds cool although July 2011 is half a year away :)

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

The Shout! Factory Select titles are, in fact, due to hit sometime in February.  I'd expect Gamera vs. MST3K around the same time mathematically as the other releases.  I think I saw someone had done that math somewhere.  I mean, I'm not confirming any dates, because I'm not sure I have any, but we won't be releasing it any earlier than normal and we won't be releasing it later.

Hey Brian, just for the sake of ending speculation do you have a best guestimate of release dates / or around what months you are targeting sets 20 & 21 ?
It said the Shout Select is coming out in February..

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Although Sony still has a copyright. Your more likely to liscence it from them. But even that's a long shot.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

The Japanese take their iconic monsters VERY seriously.  In their minds--not to mention their culture--these are not films that are fodder for on-screen mockery.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Well, I don't see how the Gamera copyright holders would really take that much offense. After all, you guys are putting the originals out uncut and remastered for the American market.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

Here's the thing... Daie didn't license it to us, so no, I don't see that happening.  The original Gamera deal we did was brokered through a third party.  Some time between then and now, that third party then took over all North American rights to Gamera.  And they don't mind its use in MST3K.  So, we didn't win over Daie.  And we wouldn't win over Toho.  If anything, this would likely prevent Toho from deciding to hand those rights over to a third party, for fear that they'd allow it to happen, too.

As for bonus material, I'm still working on XX.  We really only announced XXI because it was Turkey Day and we wanted to give the fans something to get excited over.  But I won't really start working on it too much until XX's in the can.

RE: Gamera MST3K Set.

The Godzilla question popped into my head, too.  Maybe Toho will see and take a lesson from Daie that its' not so bad to lease out the rights for us MSTies.
