The 3 C’s of Comedy: Carvey, Carell and Colbert
The Dana Carvey Show featured the SNL alum in his own weekly sketch comedy vehicle, taking jabs at politics, pop culture and all points in between. Airing in 1996 on ABC, the series featured regulars like Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Robert Smigel, to name a few. Debuting on DVD, the 2-disc set features the entire series, including an unaired episode, new cast interviews and deleted scenes. Look for it May 12.
Georgia On Our Minds…
Those Georgia peaches themselves, the Designing Women, are finally getting their just desserts. The first season of the saucy series, which debuted in 1987, arrives on DVD on May 26. Starring Dixie Carter, Delta Burke, Annie Potts and Jean Smart, the sitcom centered on the Sugarbaker sisters (Carter and Burke) and their interior design firm. Comedy always ensued, as did memorable tirades and discussions. The 4-DVD set includes the complete season, plus a captivating look behind the scenes with show creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and a cast reunion event.
Who Wouldn’t Want To Be A Middleman?!?
In the category of “canceled before their time” series, we’ve released Freaks And Geeks, My So-Called Life, Sports Night … the list goes on. Gratefully—and at the same time tragically—we can add The Middleman to the list. The series, which debuted in June 2008, lasted only a season on ABC Family. Similar in theme to Men In Black, the “Middleman” (Matt Keeslar, Dune) and his protégé Wendy Watson (Natalie Morales) defended the earth on a weekly basis against a bevy of exotic creatures. Based on a graphic novel, the dialogue was very tongue-in-cheek and ironic, essentially creating a fun show to watch, enjoy and roll your eyes at. Look for a 4-DVD set on July 28 which includes the complete series, commentaries, deleted scenes, a gag reel and more.
A Sweet Anthology
You’d be hard pressed to find a music fan who didn’t know The Sweet. Those ’70s Brit rockers bestowed such classics as “Ballroom Blitz,” “Fox On The Run” and “Love Is Like Oxygen” to us. In fact, their music has recently been used in the new TV series Life On Mars (“Little Willy” and “Ballroom Blitz”). The 2-CD Action: The Sweet Anthology —remastered from the original tapes—is set to hit our shores on April 28 and includes 32 great songs. The band is playing a handful of US and Canadian dates in coming weeks. Check out their dates here: www.thesweetband.com.
