Even More Vee-Jay Goodness
Hot on the heels of our acclaimed box set, Vee-Jay: The Definitive Collection, comes best-ofs by four of Vee-Jay’s biggest artists, Jimmy Reed, Jerry Butler, The Dells and The Staple Singers. In order to save time and get these classic recordings back in print as soon as possible, we went ahead and gave them all the same title: Best Of The Vee-Jay Years. And guess what—they are! All of the hugely influential and wildly popular hits of bluesman Jimmy Reed were recorded for Vee-Jay, and soul man Jerry Butler helped invent the genre with his early hits there. The Dells moved from doo-wop to soul at Vee-Jay, and The Staple Singers recorded all of their early classic gospel hits for the label. Mix and match, or just get ’em all!
Thelma Hits SF
The lovely and talented Miss Thelma Houston has been invited to perform at Amoeba Records in San Francisco, following a hugely successful appearance at the Los Angeles location last month. She takes the stage at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 20th, performing songs from her new CD, A Woman’s Touch, and signing copies too. If you are in the Bay Area, make sure to get there early for prime positioning!
We’ve Got The Stuff You Like to See, Hear, and Now …Wear!
That’s right, folks, you no longer have to squint at the back of your favorite DVDs and CDs to gaze lovingly at the hip-to-be-rectangular Shout! Factory logo, trademark of quality and pop-culture geekiness. We’ve blown it up real good and slapped it on a mess of T-shirts, so that you too can be branded as Shout! Factory “product.” Extra features and bonus tracks are up to you, though.
Kurt Cobain: About A Son Is in Theaters Now
This intimate and moving portrayal of late musician and artist Kurt Cobain is told entirely in his own voice, without celebrity soundbites or sensational tabloid angles. The landmark film, created by AJ Schnack and Michael Azerrad, is based on more than 25 hours of previously unheard taped interviews with Cobain, conducted by noted music journalist Azerrad for his book “Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana.” Find a theater near you at www.kurtcobainaboutason.com and don’t wait for it to come out on DVD. Well, OK, Shout! Factory will be releasing it on DVD in 2008, but it’s so good, you should see it now and own it then.
