The Countdown to Comic-Con ’08 Begins
Well, maybe it’s a bit premature to start thinking about next year’s Comic-Con. So let’s talk about 2007’s assemblage. Shout’s booth was a smashing success. The three members of The Film Crew (Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett) signed their new DVD, Hollywood After Dark, and also helmed a standing-room-only panel in which they previewed excerpts from upcoming DVDs and answered a plethora of questions. And if that’s not enough excitement, the lovely and timeless Elvira, Mistress of the Dark paid a

visit to our booth to give away prizes (and give photo opps; see Shout! team). We wrapped up our 5-day San Diego stay and headed home with a box full of entry slips. See, throughout the convention, folks were entering to win a huge box of Shout CDs and DVDs, like Sonic The Hedgehog and Greg The Bunny. Upon returning to the Shout offices, we drew the winner’s name, one John Christian. Congratulations from all of us to John! Now for the hard question: Which set do you listen to or watch first?
Angela Chase & Jordan Catalano 4-Ever
If you’re anything like us, the ’90s wouldn’t have been the same without the TV series My So-Called Life. It’s another of those brilliantly written and cast shows—like Freaks And Geeks—that was canceled before its time. The flannel-heavy, single-season series was released on DVD a few years back, but was devoid of bells and whistles. We’re rectifying that oversight with the release of a deluxe 6-DVD box set. That’s right: MSCL is getting the Shout! Factory treatment, much like Freaks And Geeks did. Preorder the set now! It streets on October 30 and contains brand new interviews with the cast and creators, commentaries, a 40-page book and more. We did right by a very right show!
Our Flame’s Eternal for The Bangles
The Bangles are one of those bands that have songs to fill the soundtrack of our lives. Whether it’s “Hazy Shade Of Winter,” which conjures up scenes from the film Less Than Zero or “Walk Like An Egyptian,” which brings to mind its Cleopatra-esque hand-dancing video, there are times and places associated with their recordings. Return To Bangleonia is the band’s first live concert DVD and features the original lineup. Recorded at L.A.’s House of Blues, the concert features all the faves, including the aforementioned songs, plus “Manic Monday,” “Hero Takes A Fall” and so many more. Backstage acoustic performances, a photo gallery and a tell-all commentary track are also included. This one’s on shelves now.
The Disco Diva Returns
After a 17-year recording absence, Thelma “Don’t Leave Me This Way” Houston returns with a new album, A Woman’s Touch. With vocals as strong, assertive and gorgeous as they ever were, Thelma tackles songs originally recorded by some of her male favorites and gives them, that’s right, a woman’s touch. The CD, which came out last week, includes covers of songs by Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Sylvester and even Sting. There’s something for everyone on here, but especially for those who like great music.
