Let’s Have a Hootenanny
Ever been to a good old-fashioned Hootenanny? They may be a
thing of the past, but we’ve managed to capture the experience on DVD. Back in
1963, ABC premiered Hootenanny, a program
that featured live musical and comedy acts. The long-lost show is available
once again on The Best of Hootenanny,
a 3-DVD set on January 16 and includes rare performances by Johnny Cash, Judy
Collins, The Chad Mitchell Trio, The Rooftop Singers, Carly Simon, Trini Lopez,
and comedy from Woody Allen and Bill Cosby! Love A Mighty Wind? Here’s the inspiration.

We’re Celebrating (and Celebrated)!
Shout! Factory is very pleased to announce that two of our recent
releases are up for Grammy® awards. Solomon Burke’s “Tomorrow Is Forever” is
recognized for “Best Country Collaboration with Vocals” (featuring Ms. Dolly
Parton) from Burke’s critically acclaimed CD Nashville. Also getting a nod is Poetry On Record:
98 Poets Read Their Work (1888-2006) boxed
set for “Best Historical Album.” Winners will be announced on February 11.
We’ve also
received some attention from the Blues Music Awards
(formerly the W.C. Handy Awards). Solomon Burke is nominated for “Soul Blues
Male Artist of the Year,” while The John Lee Hooker box set, Hooker, and Freddie King’s Live at the Electric Ballroom, 1974 are duking it out for “Historical Album of the Year.” Winners announced on May 10.
Finally, Shout! was pleased to attend the ASCAP Deems
Taylor Awards ceremony on December 7th, in New York City, where two
of our writers picked up awards for liner notes that they wrote for two amazing
releases. Receiving awards for excellence in music journalism were David Ritz
for Johnny “Guitar” Watson: The
Funk Anthology and Ernest Hardy for Chet
Baker: Career 1952-1988. Congratulations to our esteemed writers! |
