Mst3k Just an idea
I understand that there rights issues with the episodes due to someone being uncomfortable about the material. Jim & Joel are uncomfortable with the KTMA episodes put on disc because they were a work in progress and they didn't have the rights to the movies. However, 9 of those episodes DID get rights cleared when they were used in Season 3. Those season 3 episodes have issues too due to Sandy Frank having hated the way the brains picked on him. So it seems that they have an equal possibility of making it to DVD. So here is my thought: by some miracle, if they could get those movies, may I suggest that the release be a dual episode disc. For example, if they got Gamera, one single disc could contain BOTH episode 302 & K05. It's the same movie, but two versions of it. Why? That way the fans can see the KTMA episode (the initial attempt) and the Season 3 episode (the final result). I noticed in a recent interview that Jim Mallon did say he wanted to preserve his master tapes. Here's a possible way to do it and make a lot of fans happy. The dual episode idea is because some fans out there may not care for the KTMA episode, but they still get the Season 3 episode with it, sort of a pick and choose or compare and contrast. And there are 9 episodes this could happen with. That too, could be used as a gesture towards getting those episodes cleared too. "We made fun of how your movies appeared, so we'll place out our early, not as good as we are now, episodes". It's just a thought. Maybe for the 25th Anniversary, these 9 movies (18 episodes) could be finally released. The extras could be interviews of the following (relating to said episodes): Jim Mallon talking about working at the KTMA station, Kevin Murphy talking about the same and being the voice of Cambot in the first episode, (Perhaps the clip that reveals what Cambot says?), Joel Hogdson discussing his comedy years, Trace Beaulieu talking about his comedy years and becoming the voice of Crow and expanding his roles to include Dr Forrester, Josh Weinstein on his comedy years and developing his voice for Servo (from Kermit to TOM SERVO) and becoming Dr Erhardt, Frank Connif discussing picking movies and sitting through these season 3 episodes in the writing room, Mike Nelson talking about these episodes, Paul Chaplin talking about his experiences early on (since he started writing around Episode 307), and finally, Bridget Jones also talking about the early years and getting involved with the show. Since the releases tend to be 4 packs, and these are only 9 episodes, there would be 3 more episodes from seasons 4-10, so that Bill, Mary Jo & Patrick could be interviewed as extras so that they aren't forgotten. I know I'm going on at great length, and I understand it may never happen, but it's a thought that I hope may someday be a reality.

I think that the dual-discs are a really cool idea.  Unfortunately, as you said, the rights for those movies are tied up pretty tightly.

Eh, we'll never see those KTMA episodes on DVD.  I think if EVERY LAST EPISODE of MST3K was exhausted, and everything else had seen release, perhaps then they'd relent.  But the creators of the show are so embarrassed of that old stuff, (which is silly), it just doesn't seem likely.  And there's plenty of more recent stuff to offer first.

Sandy Frank hasn't had the rights to the GAMERA series, Tsuburaya TV shows or LEGEND OF THE DINOSAURS for years.
