Saturday Supercade
I'm new here, just found this site a couple of hours ago while searching for any releases of Donkey Kong country. Anyways, does Shout! have any plans to release the Saturday Supercade? Or does another company own it? I'm just curious. Thanks all!

RE: Saturday Supercade
Brain hasn't mentioned looking into this but we all figured that it would be very hard to license the show.  First of all Supercade originally aired on CBS and due to the age they may not have the masters still.  Then there's the fact that the cartoons are Ruby-Spears cartoons creatred under Hanna-Barbera.

Even Hanna-Barbera would have problems releasing this since it was mainly done by Ruby Spears.  The same goes for Dragons Lair.  Going back to the masters, there are sets out there that use vhs and film from private collectors to create a set of old  cartoons.  With the Astroboy 60's sets, some of the original masters were destroyed, thus some of the episodes were in fact from VHS and mm film copies.

A show like Saturday Supercade might fall into this category.  The problem is there weren't really any vhs made to get the episodes from.  With big name television companies they tend to treat their shows masters poorly mostly the older ones.  There are some exceptions like WB.  This is what happened to the Astroboy masters.

As you can see it isn't only a matter of licensing the show but finding them as well.

RE: Saturday Supercade
I see. I was under the false assumption that the companies would keep their masters safe. That's kinda reckless I think, but when you produce ALL those shows, you may start neglecting some of the older ones. Anyways, I was just wondering because that show was pretty good. Thanks for the info, but on another subject, do these places also own the rights to release the show on dvd? Because that kinda sucks if they don't still have the Saturday Supercade masters AND they're in charge of producing it AND shout! isn't.

RE: Saturday Supercade
Usually it isn't up to the station it aired on which in this case would be CBS.  Usually it has to do with the company that produces it, which would be Ruby Spears.  Unfortunately this show would have a lot of copyrights to figure out.  Not only did Nintendo characters such as Mario and Donkey Kong appear in the show, but so did Space Ace, Frogger, Qubert and many other video game characters.  Then there's the fact that you's have to pay for the rights to the music that played throughout the show.

So, basicaly if Shout would try to release this they'd have to pay liberties to Ruby Spears Productions (which might lead to dealings with Hanna Barbera),  Don Bluth Studios, Nintendo, Konami, and other contributors.  As for Don Bluth Studios, Brain has stated before that  "The biggest problem is that it's Don Bluth, who has a tendency to have deals with Universal.  Not really even sure who to approach about it."

While video comapnies might be more leanent, the major problems are Don Bluth Studios, and Ruby Spears Productions.
Ruby Spears Productions worked as a partner company to Hanna Barbera, since it's founders originally worked for HB.  Thus, as I stated liscencing from Ruby Spears Productions might lead to negotiating with HB.

Even if CBS has the masters still, they need to contact all these parties before even considering a DVD release, which would go for ShoutFactory too.  This is the major problem, not even VHS are available of Saturday Supercade, which proves that there are a lot of licensing problems.

RE: Saturday Supercade

Yeah, I thought about that and the licensing for video game characters isn't that bad, is it? I mean they already got all of the Mario cartoons (although there was the Yoshi incident) and Sonic cartoons. I don't know much on the subject, though I can see how it'd be a big issue. They could do what they did with Captain N as far as if it's actual music. If it's other music, I can see what you mean. It seems barely beneficial to Shout! Factory to go through all the trouble of these copyrights and finding out who even to consult with in the first place just to release a box set of episodes. From what you're saying (which I don't doubt, don't get me wrong) it seems highly unlikely that they'll release it.

So has Shout worked with Ruby Spears before? And is there hope of release at all? By the way, thanks for the educated and helpful responses.

RE: Saturday Supercade
If this show were to be released on DVD, the segments would most likely be released separatly. I don't think all the segments would be released on one boxset.

If Shout Factory were to get the rights to this show, the most likely segment they'd get the rights to are the Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. segments since they partly own the rights to Nintendo cartoons. But the DK and DKjr DVDs are the ones I'd most likely get anyway since I'm a diehard Nintendo fan. I probably wouldn't get Frogger since that segment wasn't that great (I didn't think it was). Q-bert, possibly. I've seen one Q-bert episode and I thought that was pretty good. I didn't like the Pitfall segments at all so I'd scratch that from my list.

RE: Saturday Supercade

Yeah, I suppose they would. Then again, Captain N and the New Super Mario World were packaged together, and they were different shows in one package. Either way, why do people keep dvd liscenses but never release them? They would make more money to just sell the liscence rather then let it sit, doing nothing. I like shout though. I have been pleased with every dvd that I purchased of shout. So that is the whole purpose I made this topic. Same for Donkey Kong Country, though I didn't start, nor reply to it. I just like shout releases. LOL I'm rambling now so I should probably stop.

RE: Saturday Supercade
If CBS doesn't still have the masters then I'm sure Hanna Barbera (or whoever owns the rights to Ruby-Spears' stuff) does.  Not like them to throw out their work.  Besides, it's not THAT old and there's plenty of older stuff where the masters still exist.  Dragon's Lair definitely still exists, as I came across a fan set from recent recordings of repeats of all 13 episodes.  If THAT is still around, no reason to assume Supercade isn't as well since it was from around the same time.

Doesn't Warner own all the old HB stuff now?  I know they were recently talking in chat session with tvshowsondvd.com about Pac-Man and some other shows from that era.  So we might conceivably get to see a Supercade released through WB at some point.  Man, I hope so!  Love the old video game cartoons!

i was watching boomarang just about a month ago and saw the one of the space ace segments of the show (i think it was inbetween scooby doo and some other show) so if they have those i dont see any reason why they wouldnt have the other segments:donkey kong,Q-bert,pitfall as well.
