MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set

These are the 4 episodes that will be on the first Shout Factory MST3K release according to the panel at Comic-Con as reported on Satellite News:

211- First Spaceship on Venus
706- Laserblast
904- Werewolf
1004- Future War

Apparently, there will be some "collectibles" in the set as well, hence the thick box. These include a Crow figurine and cards.

Never saw First Spaceship on Venus. Been a while, but I don't remember Future War being so great. Laserblast and Werewolf are two of the funniest episodes.

RE: MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set
I was expecting something more groundbreaking like Crawling Eye, or something that we Misties call Key episodes where something happened like Crawling Eye was the first Comedy Central show, Rocketship XM introduced Frank Coniff & Kevin Murphy but we get
First Spaceship on Venus - a show that even the MST3K cast dislike
Werewolf - a Great show, but nothing key about it
Future War, a good show but again just run of the mill
Laserblast - a true Key episode - when this was mentioned as one of the shows picked one was lead to believe other key episodes would join it, but it didnt work out that way
Joel made the show, why they went with one Joel, and not a very good Joel at that and three Mike episodes is beyond me..nothing against Mike at all
The Misties are mixed, the Scifi fans love it, us older fans feel its lackluster and nothing really that special save for Laserblast..

This is coming from me. You  know the guy who was probably most against this move? Let me just say, know that i know the episodes on the set

I AM MORE EXCITED ABOUT THIS SET THAN ANY OTHER RHINO SET.

Future war and laserblast people. I sure hope the dvd menus are as campy as the rhino menus. Id like to here the ultra depressing laserblast theme in the dvd menu. I acctually have the mp3 of the song on my computer.

Anything from Season Two is terrific and First Spaceship On Venus is one of my favorites. My son loves it too, it's his favorite episode. The goofy action of the film with the absolutely non-stop, great jokes over it is a terrific combination. "How much does a herring weigh?" "What a stupid robot!" The jokes during the brown goo explosion near the end. And many, many more.

The other episodes are certainly not bad choices. I'm looking forward to owning this set.

This set sounds like it's going to be great.  The extras (especially the Crow figure) look awesome!  Nice batch of episodes, First Spaceship On Venus was a nice surprise and the other three I predicted as likely to extremely likely (http://forrestcrow.proboards47.com/index.cgi?board=mstchat&action=display&thread=1152828151&page=1).  Can't wait to find out what's going to be on the next volume!

Fantastic job Shout Factory, keep up the good work!!

I like this set although its not really representative of a 20th anniversary set , thank God Laserblast is the exception to this set.
I do like Season 2 a lot myself..only the 4 Lipperts, Rocket Attack USA and Godzilla (HA) are left

RE: MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set
I have to agree that while this is a "nice" set, for a 20th Anniversary Release it is a bit lackluster.

First Spaceship on Venus, one of my favorite films, was a good choice, but Future War?

I know you cannot please everyone, but at least a theme would have been appreciated.
How about, "Film with Best Host Segment," "Most Memorable Short," "Film with Best Song," and "Fan Favorite not yet offered."

Something like that.

I think the main problem is that the devoted fans, such as ourselves, are almost always overlooked or ignored when it comes to MST3K offerings.  Most of us "not so younger" fans remember the Comedy Central debacles when they played season one shows on Turkey Day without consulting the cast as to their choice of best work of the time.  Or when Comedy Central promoted a "fan favorite" contest without listing any way of contacting them.  Then they just ran what they wanted under the banner "most voted."  Then there was the movie debacle where Universal Studios cut the MSTie movie until it was shorter than the film being lampooned.  When it was released on DVD it had no extras at all.

Shout Factory seems like a good organization.  I think that in the future they will try to strike a balance between what they CAN offer (film availability), and what the fans (those with the money) want to see.

RE: MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set

As far as key shows go, The Crawling Eye would have been nice, but biggies Mitchell and The Brain that Wouldn't Die have already been done by Rhino.  There's always Samson Vs. the Vampire Women and Revenge of the Creature floating around out there, but that's all I can think of.

I'd like to see the unaired "pilot" (it wasn't the full movie) The Green Slime and some KTMA footage as bonuses (the gang hates them, but they would be interesting to see.  Behind-the-scences and Oscar specials also.  They've said that season sets on either Blu-Ray or DVD would be too pricy, but you never really know (knock on wood).

RE: MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set

Episodes aside the Crow Figure looks very good.  That something Rhino never thought of.  Hopfully down the line they might add Tom Servo and Gypy on the next few sets like with the Simpsons Head DVD packaging.  Unless we have to wait for the 40th and 60th anniversaries.  Might be worth it.

Even if you don't think the episdes are good enough they all have their funny moments.  Even Future War has some good low budget Dinosaur head jokes.  Werewolf is great just to see Mike and The Bots sing "Where Oh Werewolf" as a 60's girl group.  "Mike you didn't really date a guy names Steve who died?"  "Well funny thing..."

The KTMA episdoes aren't going to happen in the near or Distant Future.  Even if the Best Brains crew didn't think they were the greatest as far as timing and joke quality, countless times they've explained why the EPS won't be released.  They never got the rights to use those movies for the KTMA season.  I guess basically they used movies in the KTMA vault since they worked for the station.  But give SHOUT! some time.  Maybe we'll at least get the host segments from that and "THE GREEN SLIME" pilot.

I'm glad there's still a company releasing the show at all.

I am thrilled beyond words to finally see Laserblast and Werewolf on the first release. These are two of the funniest IMO. Now if they would only release Deathstalker 3 and the Warriors from Hell and Devil Fish. I'm also glad to know that there are other MST3K fans out there who are as eager as I am to get their hands on these upcoming releases. Glad to be aboard.

Some People Hate Future War, some like it..im indifferent on the scifi episodes. We all have ones we like more than other fans, the idea is to respect the ones we like that our fellow mistie doesnt. I was really hoping for Crawling Eye or RocketShip XM since these were key shows, and are good Joel episodes.
Im glad episodes are still being released thats always a good thing

RE: MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set
I'm one of those older fans who just never got the Sci-Fi episodes for the most part.  The departure of Trace & Frank crippled the show in my opinion, and while it was still fun, it was no longer essential.  I have always been puzzled why certain earlier episodes continued to get ignored in favor of more recent Sci-Fi shows by Rhino.  And now, I have to say I'm disappointed with Shout's offering here with only the mediocre 'Venus' coming from the 'golden era' of the show.

Some suggestions (as if it matters) to get me to buy the next compilation.  I won't go through the Sandy Frank stuff although many of us can probably agree that 'Time of the Apes', 'Fugitive Alien I & II', the 'Gamera' & 'Godzilla' series would be very welcome.  Also, 'Amazing Colossal Man' would jump to the top of my list if available.

1. 'The Crawling Eye' #101 - It's the first one on the Comedy Channel for Pete's sake.  Should be a slam dunk if the rights are available.  What does a 20th Anniversary edition mean without this?

2. 'Rocketship X-M' #201 - Such an important episode.  It marked the upgraded preparation and detail that went into the show for years to follow.  Frank is introduced.  Servo's new voice.  And the trend-setting hair helmet of Lloyd Bridges.  From this point forward, MST3K was a show that couldn't be missed.

3. 'Daddy-O' #307 - This one ranks as my personal favorite.  I guess since it isn't monsters or sci-fi, the geeks in the science building aren't into it.  But the quips and gags, including great host segments, are brilliant.  The cast was hitting their stride and Joel wasn't sick of it yet.  Hike up your pants!

4. 'Teenage Caveman' #315 - Why why why hasn't this one been released?  Roger Corman, Robert Vaughn and Frank De Kova really get the treatment here.  The short, 'Catching Trouble' is unbelievable.  This entire episode is a home run.

5. 'Attack of the Eye Creatures' #418 - They just didn't care.  Such a bad movie.  Just as bad as the overrated badness of 'Manos'.

6. 'Bride of the Monster' #423 - While the later Ed Wood movies made it to DVD, this one is still waiting.  A historic film and great treatment by the boys.

7. 'Girls Town' #601 - A fun movie with some stars and an excellent treatment.  Starts its last great season with a bang.  MST3K showed it was still a great show.  This one with 'Daddy-O', 'Kitten With a Whip' & 'Teenage Crime Wave' would make an excellent 'Juvenile Delinquent' set.

8. 'San Francisco International' #614 - Bad TV movies done by MST3K don't seem to get on DVD (rights issues?).  The cast in this stinker adds to the fun factor.  Purnell Roberts, Clu Gulager, David Hartman, Van Johnson, etc.  I watch this a lot still and it never gets old.  You could set this one up with the 'Master Ninja' series and 'Being From Another Planet' for 'TV Movie' fun.

9. 'The Beast of Yucca Flats' #621 - For my money, Coleman Francis is the worst of all time and this vehicle for Tor Johnson's talents was wonderfully bad.  'Plan 9' is a cakewalk compared to this and Mike & the 'bots to a great job with this historically bad movie.

10. 'Revenge of the Creature' #801 - The whole 'milestone' thing seems to have been ignored and this is another one which should have been on the 20th anniversary edition.   Regardless of the decline post-Trace & Frank, this is a fun movie and done fairly well with the new lineup.  Considering all of the Sci-Fi movies that are on DVD, this one should be an easy pick (if available).

Hey Shout, still waiting for the final SCTV set!  I want more 'Half-Wits' & '6 Gun Justice'!!!!

RE: MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set
I think there's a lot of misunderstanding here.  The episodes, while fantastic episodes, were not designed to reflect the 20th Anniversary itself.  How could you possibly give an adequate tribute to that series in only four episodes?  We went to several fan forums and went straight to the sources over at Satellite News, as well as talked to the MST3K gang to determine what was worth licensing.  And then we did.

The true test of the 20th Anniversary is how the set's being treated.  Don't expect limited edition tins with every Shout! Factory release.  Don't expect a figurine.  Don't expect lobby cards.  And you certainly can't expect what amounts to a feature-length retrospective look at the history of the series that includes interviews with nearly everyone ever involved with the show.  Not to mention the inclusion of the Comic-Con reunion panel, a feat never before (and, likely, never again) accomplished in 20 years.

I defend, whole-heartedly, our celebration of this series.  And though the episodes won't please every fan, their announcement has certainly pleased many.

We're looking forward to making a splash with the second set, our first two titles having already been licensed (with more on the way).  Trust us, you'll dig what we have lined up.

Well this is an amazing selection of episodes, But it most certainly is not, As you so Elegenly put it "The First Set Done Right." By the way, Theres a huge mystery as to where you liscenced First Spaceship on Venus from. Exactly who gave you permision to sell that episode and why did you pick it?

RE: MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set
First Spaceship on Venus was selected for a number of reasons.  First and foremost, many of the cast and crew members loved it.  And it appeared on many of the fan-favorite lists we were given upon entering the deal.  We also definitely wanted to make sure Joel was represented in the 20th Anniversary of his own creation and the other three movies are hosted by Mike.

Personally, if we were to truly try to pay tribute to the series with only the four films, I'd have gone after a KTMA title.  Perhaps even the pilot episode, which we have in our offices.  Unfortunately, neither Jim Mallon nor Joel Hodgson are comfortable with releasing those early episodes on DVD.

HOLY SMOKES! You have a copy of the Pilot Episode? That makes you one of the few people who have ever seen it. Dear God. Most of us would gladly sell body parts to get a look at that. You'd better put extra security up at your offices before someone grabs it and puts it on YouTube or something!!

Notundercover, we're not really in the habit of putting our business affairs in the forums, so I'll refrain from doing so here.  All I will say is that extensive research was done and all four films were cleared successfully.

Ojo, I have to admit, there is some bit of pride I take in having seen the pilot.  It's actually a really funny episode.  I understand why the guys have no desire to release that season, but it is a shame.  I'd love for people to see this stuff.  That being said, you will be able to see footage from the first episode edited into our extensive History of MST3K featurette.  So, at least there's that.

I only got into MST3K a couple of years ago, and have since grabbed every episode I could get my hands on.  And the Shout! Factory set looks like the best treatment the series has ever recieved.  Rhino never put this much effort into any of their sets!  A retrospective documentary with new interviews and clips from unreleased episodes?  A tin case with figurine?  Lobby cards?  This set looks amazing!  And, to top it off, at long last an episode from Season Seven!  I can't believe that there are nay-sayers about this!

First Spaceship On Venus is a killer-funny episode and I can't wait to get this set. That episode is a family favorite at my house. As much as I enjoyed the show right up till the final episode, I'd love to see more early stuff, especially from seasons 2, 3 and 4 with the occasional season 1, 5 and 6 too. Anything by Robert Lippert from season 2 would be especially welcome; "rock climbing" (Lost Continent) comes to mind, but all four were great and some of my all-time favorites. Rocketship X-M is still my favorite episode! Of course, the "Gamera-damerung", Amazing Colossal Man and it's sequel War Of The Colossal Beast with the Mr. B Natural short and host segments intact would be a grand slam set in sales. More sets, faster, faster!

No worries, Notundercover.  I just don't want to be responsible for saying something that's supposed to be confidential.  I'm a producer, not a business affairs guy, so I know my limits.

As for the remaining KTMA episodes, I've not seen them.  We do have footage from the KTMA years in our featurettes, which all looks cool.  I'd love to get the opportunity to watch them all.  The idea of "first thought theater" appeals to me a great deal.

I had to register just to say "Thank you!" for the first MST3K collectible figure ever.  Now, can we maybe get Servo & Gypsy?  Please...;)

Also, nice opening salvo of episodes.  I've been watching every one that's on youtube & am down to 2 (finally) that I'd never seen.  Pretty much any Comedy Central episode that's not on DVD (or VHS in The ACM's case).  And the one that I hope you guys can get, above all others (even the 5 Gameras & other Godzilla, I'm a huge fan in general of the kaiju genre & these are top o' the listers for me & my buddies) is The Beast Of Yucca Flats.  Absolute gold!  The final part of the movie in particular is so freakin' hilarious.

Thanks again for keeping the myth alive.:)

I'm also a fan of The Beast of Yucca Flats.  We'll have to include it in the list.

Enjoy!

RE: MST3K 20th Anniversary DVD Set
Hi Brian, Im glad you are explaining the whys of what was released on the set.
My question is why werent more key episodes included in this 20th Anniversary Set ?
Movies like Crawling Eye, Rocketship XM, Samson vs the Vampire Women for example, where an event happened like the intro of Frank, the departure of Frank....
The Crawling Eye in particular was the very first episode on Comedy Central..I would have thought this was an appropriate time to release this..for the 20th anniversary set
I see what you are saying, that its the goodies , not the episodes per se that make this a 20th Anniversary Set.
First Spaceship on Venus was a not so popular title among Best Brains according to the ACEG and isnt high on the old Rhino Poll, while the other 3 are..I think its a good set of episodes, but I expected more monumental episodes...at the same time, Ill take what you can get for us :)
My other questions to you are when can we expect more announcements for future releases, and what are your chances of releasing some of the shows from Season 3 which contained Gamera, Roger Corman, Bert I Gordon movies and the Season 2 Lippert movies ?
Thanks for your time. I do look forward to the 20th Anniversary set..and beyond..
