Universal Fire Impact On Shout Releases
Several thoughts to list before I ask my question:

-From what I can gather, the video vault that was destroyed contained video copies of their titles...not the originals.

-For Ironside, rather than spend the money to properly remaster the series, Universal sent you the time-compressed syndication masters they prepared years ago for general use (which of course is better than not having the series released at all...I am a happy paying customer for Ironside materials.)

-Now, assuming that the vault was their syndication masters,

-And assuming that when the head of NBC Universal said nothing was lost he was referring to original film elements stored in the salt mines,

-And assuming that you had interest in continuing the Ironside releases, as well as other Universal titles,

My question is: What impact will this fire have on your future releases?  Since Universal is not going to spend the money to remaster for sub-licensed titles (I assume) and the titles you release most likely don't generate the kind of sales that would allow you to carry the cost of remastering (otherwise Universal would release them), do you have any notion yet if this fire will impact the good work SHOUT! is doing in making quality titles available that would not otherwise see the light of day?

Thank you for any answer you might give, and I realize that my post is made up of assumptions and speculations...and that I have way too much time on my hands.

RE: Universal Fire Impact On Shout Releases

I'm speculating on one detail but *if* Universal signed a contract to agree to license this title out, then wouldn't they have to follow through on providing materials to Shout! to avoid being in breach of contract, if Shout! wanted to proceed with a particular tile already licensed to them?

RE: Universal Fire Impact On Shout Releases
We're working with the folks over at Universal to determine what was lost in regards to our future releases.  So far, you're right that nothing was permanently lost.  But we will need to re-evaluate our titles, once we know what was affected.  I don't think we'll really know that for some time.

Will try to keep you updated.

RE: Universal Fire Impact On Shout Releases

All of us who have been starting to see Shout! as the savior of classic Universal titles that have been neglected, will wait to hear how things stand.

I don't know if this is common knowledge with the people at Shout! or elsewhere, but I have noticed that Netflix for their "instant viewing online" already list a number of unreleased Universal programs in terms of their remaining seasons including Adam-12, so I guess we can take some assurance that *A* duplicate set of masters has to exist for them to have made that possible.      Other stalled titles on that list are Dragnet, Kojak and McMillan And Wife.
