Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors - Audio problem?
First off, a BIG thank you for releasing the first set of Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors!  It's about time this long lost gem got the royal treatment on DVD.
My question is, has anyone else noticed something odd about the audio for Episode 5 - "Ghost Ship?"  By odd, I mean the mix seems to be off.  All the dialogue is coming out of the left channel (instead of the center), whereas the music and sound effects seem to have an "ambience" effect applied to them, creating a pseudo-stereo effect.  My main concern is the dialogue, as having it all coming out of the left channel makes it difficult to hear, especially when the music and sound effects are particularly busy in some scenes.

Anyone else notice this?  I haven't detected this with any of the other episodes I've watched so far.

RE: Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors - Audio problem?
I don't have a stereo system (just a stereo TV), and I haven't really noticed what you have observed. However, when I do get a good sounding audio system, I'll have to look out for this. I DO notice that the sound in "Ghostship" sounds a little faster than real time (perhaps the pacing of this episode itself seems a little faster). In other words, it "sounds" and SEEMS like this episode was mastered off of a PAL source. If you have Filmation's "He-Man" DVDs, they "sound" and seem to play faster than real time because they were all mastered off the PAL sources that make up most of the Filmation-library -to -DVD masters. Hope this helps.....but something about the audio in this episode is a bit out of whack. Meredith

RE: Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors - Audio problem?
The PAL theory is always a possibility.  I know about the Filmation issue, apparently none of their NTSC masters exist anymore so BCI had to master everything from PAL sources.  Still yonks better than the old VHS releases from the 80's...  :)

As for Ghost Ship, it wasn't really a speed issue that seemed out of whack, it was the mix itself.  Almost like the wrong channels had been assigned to the various elements.  Dialogue generally comes from the center speaker in a surround mix, or occasionally it will be directional based on the position of the characters on screen.  But as far as I know, Jayce has always been a monaural show, so the sound should be equal in all channels...

I used to have this episodes on one of the old VHS releases and didn't have a problem with the audio on that, so I'm curious as to what happened this time around.

RE: Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors - Audio problem?

I'm afraid I don't have that boxset in question so I wouldn't know exactly, however on my UK Adventures of Sonic boxset the first episode does have an audio problem very similar to what you are describing (everything being a bit tinny and sounds like in a vacuum) but the one that I recorded off the TV has perfect sound.

Most likely a master issue which nothing can be done about it (even Brian said that these had to be remastered a little bit due to the condition of them).
