As much a fan as I am of the show, I must express my sincere disappointment in the quality of the transfers used for most of the "Father Knows Best" episodes I have screened so far (first 2 discs). There certainly are full-length network prints of these shows sitting in the vault at Columbia that could have been used. With Paramount coming out with such consistent high quality transfers of vintage shows like "The Untouchables" and "Perry Mason" and the incredible job that Image did with "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "The Twilight Zone", there is no excuse for cut prints and bad transfers. One of the episodes looks like it came from a 16mm dupe while another seems to exist in an excellent quality 35mm transfer. And to not even restore the Screen Gems logo to the cut prints is ridiculous.
I am, on the other hand, very pleased to see the new interviews with Elinor Donahue and Lauren Chapin and the home movies (especially the color movies shot on the set) are great. Let's just remember that while it's better to have these shows available in some form rather than none, taking the cheap way out is not always the way to go. |
