Member since: 1/20/2007 | | Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (AoSTH) | Are there any plans for Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog? It may not be "SatAM" which is another show that I like that happens to be coming out, but this show was special to my heart.
It all started about 13 years ago when I first watched it on TV, can't remember the channel or the episodes but also remember a SatAM episode "Sonic and Sally" was airing. Afterwards I have forgotten about the show until two years later that a tape was bought with the episodes "High Stakes Sonic" and "Sonic Breakout", where everytime I watched it I laughed at a few scenes, "when Sonic was escaping prison and shaking himself at the CCTV cameras" and when the dynamic duo Scratch & Grounder came on, also I was sad when Sonic was depressed that he was walking and Robotnik is haunting him that Tails would get locked up. After the episode, I was introduced to gaming, Sonic 1 on my Mega Drive was my first game and started to read some Sonic comics with Porker Lewis and Johnny Lightfoot. Then "modern" Sonic came and completely forgot the series again for a long time. For ages I thought there were only two episodes until I looked at Sonic HQ that I founded out that there were 63 more! Luckily a few years ago, it came back on TV with I think either "The Robotnik Express" or "Sonic Gets Thrashed" was on and tried to catch it as much as possible (also own world record of watching the episodes "The Magic Hassle" and "Tails Prevails" over 40 times as they were the most repeated episodes) and even got to see the so called rare "Robo-Ninjas" which became one of my favourite episodes. Recorded some on tape and even a few on DVD (actually have all episodes on DVD but from a week long marathon not so long back) but if a proper release came out, I know what to do with them recordings and besides I've been waaiitttiinnggg since DVD came out for a box set, even DuckTales is only just coming out in a few weeks time.
I also gave one of my tapes to my school for a learning class that they watched at breaks, everytime the kids watch it, they always laugh at the episodes, especially "Close Encounter of the Sonic Kind" and "Robotnik's Rival". If there is any info or help of the series that Shout Factory wants, I will be more happy to help.
Does anyone else besides myself like the show apart from the infamous "That's no Good" Sonic Says? |

1. According to here http://www.sonicstadium.org/sonicnews/270/ it says that it's coming out on July but as far as I know it is at the pre-production stages hopefully coming out at the end of the year and says that Sony Music has done it but I believe there were the people who brought it in France on tapes. Would you let Amazon know that their entry is a fake? Sounds like the Super Mario Bros. Super Show situation all over again.
2. Heard news from Milton Kinght, storyboarder and designer of Dr. Robotnik (one of my many favourite characters) that there seems to be a unaired pilot (don't know how long) that about a minutes worth made it in one episode (the part where Scratch and Grounder are watching TV and on the TV comes a chase scene with Sonic and Robotnik that looks really good on a HDTV, always liked that scene from that episode). Is it possible that it might be still there, I think the credits might have used a bit of it too.
Thanks for considering it, and hope everything goes smoothly. (Also considering buying the SatAM box set as well for old times). |

As for the unaired pilot, I don't really know anything about it, but I can look into it further. It may be included with the masters I have now, though I'm guessing I'll have to dig a little to find it, assuming it still exists.
And I can't stress enough the awesomeness that is the SatAM box set. Even those who didn't enjoy it then might find themselves thoroughly surprised by the quality of the show...and bonus material!

I did know that there was an episode called: The Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad which was the pilot episode of this show (it's the one where Robotnik first invents Grounder and Scratch). But if you have the unaired pilot that would be great.
I am ABSOLUTLY looking forward to this show on DVD as well as SatAM. How many sets do you think you'll release this show in? What ever it is I am really looking forward to buying them. |

I'd love to just handle that side of the set over here on this forum, but it's relatively new and hasn't built up the numbers, yet. Any suggestions?

This set has aired on syndication a lot even semi-recently so even though the fanbase prefers SATAM over AoSTH, the fact is AoSTH is remembered by more people.
Sadly I don't know anything about this show that could help you but how about making another "art work" contest?
Unlike SATAM, this show was based more on the games, even having mecha sonic a pinball episode the chaos emerald trilogy etc.
I hope the Sonic Christmas Blast episode won't be forgotten as it was created after the show had already been cancelled, in fact that episode had Sally and tried to merge both Sonic cartoons into one.
If these sonic sets sell well do you think shout! could look into releasing Sonic Underground? a complete series set was released in the UK years ago but is no longer in print, I know this show is very popular in Europe at least. |

Member since: 1/20/2007 | | RE: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (AoSTH) | sdp: Yes, there are lots of references to the games in this series, not just the regular Sonic 1 and 2 but also the Game Gear/Master System version as well such as the episode Subterranean Sonic where Sonic and Tails go Underground (Underground Zone in Sonic 2GG) and go in a minecart (also the same level).
As for the "Sonic Sez" there were a few rare ones:
Lovesick Sonic - Some countries don't air the "That's no good" avoiding Sexual Harrassment bit.
Musta Been a Beautiful Baby - This wasn't aired in American Toon Disney, just don't play in washing machines.
Full Tilt Tails - The episode only aired once in the UK and that was on 8o'clock at night. Grounder picks up a cigarette and Sonic stops Grounder having a smoke.
Hero of the Year - Scratch and Grounder are fighting over some booze which Scratch drinks becoming drunk. Sonic comes and says alcohol and drugs are bad for you.
Robo-Ninjas - The episode is rare in the US but aired lots of times overseas, Scratch and Grounder are playing with Tails on a street which a speeding truck hits the dumb-bots and Sonic tells people don't play on the street.
I'm also positive that the Magic Hassle one is cut as there is a noticable jump in both the UK and the Toon Disney versions. (from junk to You on both versions, UK is quicker due the PAL thing)
As for making it 33 episodes would be too much compression, will require more discs and more expensive in the long run.
Brian: That quick? Must be working as fast as Sonic for these sets to come out. I believe it, just seemed quick but happier that there is less time to wait. Anyways Sonic Stadium isn't really an AoSTH community, it is more of a SegaSonic one like Sonic HQ (people who thinks that certain games are the only ones taken as fact), and for Sonic HQ dislike the show [they even put it down on their episode descriptions]. The problem of the fanbase is that it has been a rapid decline and the community is as dead as door nails (Sonic Land where the last post was months ago, if not last year), due to many fans retiring such as ClimbingGecko or moved on.
Looking for a forum of AoSTH fans is like finding a needle in 10 haystacks, Sega of America has casual viewers which ain't too bad but probably not as much fan output as here due to that it was a long time since it was last aired and not many people remember it as much as SatAM (not that there's anything wrong with it, they are both good). My only advice is look at fans across the pond (Europe especially) or try to find a little community. If you can't find anything, PC2, PorpoiseMuffins, blueluigi, myself and others who come here will help just as much.
Sorry for the long post, but I am trying to be as helpful as possible, it's just that the fanbase is smaller than SatAM but more of the casuals and kiddys watch it (hence more popular in a way).
Anyways, one thing to ponder is the openings and endings. There are three credits, one which has no sound effects which is the Toon Disney one (not as originally aired), the one with sound effects where you hear the buzzer go off and Sonic running (syndication and overseas) and a special one. I have only seen this once, it is similar to the sound effect one except that it says Jeffrey Scott as Story Editor instead of Bruce and Reed Shelly, I think this was used in the 4 parter (Quest for the Chaos Emeralds). Which one will be used since it was years (literally) since I've last seen them? |

1. Interview with Milton Knight, character designer of Robotnik. He has some pretty wacky stories behind his design for the character, and he's extremely easy to reach at www.miltonknight.com. Perhaps a "how to draw Robotnik" segment or something?
2. Not sure about voice actor interviews...we have Jaleel White, of course, if you haven't covered bases of his entire 3-show career with the Sonic franchise. Long John Baldry (Robotnik) passed away about 2 years ago, Tails' VA is an adult now...perhaps an interview with Phil Hayes and Gary Chalk (Scratch and Grounder, respectively)? I'd imagine they had a blast portraying their characters.
3. If you're interested and able to commission someone to draw up a cover (as there isn't very much AoStH stock art, to my knowledge), might I suggest Sonic comic artist Art Mawhinney? I know he was a storyboarder for SatAM, but I don't remember if he did storyboards for AoStH or not...regardless, his art style would be perfect for the set. If not him, perhaps Dave Manak (though that may prove problematic, as his art has greatly deteriorated since '93).
4. There's always the art contest. I know I'd give it a shot. |

Strangely I had a similar idea during my plan called Operation Sonic Hedgehog where I would go to DVD companies to release the show, but that is aborted now and was a couple of years ago.
Yes, Art Mahwinney was involved of the show, he was a storyboarder as I just checked the credits a few minutes ago (the Jeffrey Scott one, see above for more details). Don't know who the other character designers were, I know there's Chris LaBonte, Micheal Fontanelli, and some other people. You could also try Scott Shaw! who also worked with Art on the show as a storyboarder.
andy704: Glad to see another UK Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog watcher on the forums, I'm afraid that you (and myself too) would have to import it as it won't come out over here (I tried bringing it out here with no luck). yeah, it lasted a long time from 1993 (3rd November to be exact with the pilot) to about 1994?
Back on here: I have on my possession since that SatAM doesn't have captions anymore and too expensive to make some new ones, first 12 scripts of the show that came on a Korean education pack. They are both in English and Korean which are more captiony than a script and a couple of mistakes on there but nothing biggy. There are accurate as I've checked. |

Unfortunately, I just got back going through DiC's archives yesterday and they had NOTHING in terms of character concept art. A few generic images, but nothing conceptual.

This following message is for Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and SatAM fans in the UK. There is some good news and some great news. Thanks to a tip off on Toon Zone forums, I looked at the BBFC website which in case Americans do not know it is a rating system for every program/film/TV Show which is also used for video/DVD releases (a bit stricter over here). I random typed Sonic the Hedgehog with 150 hits and episodes of both AoSTH and SatAM came up which is a very good sign for a release (e.g. Ducktales was reviewed a couple of months before release). If you don't believe me, look it up [look at the 2007 listed ones, not the old tape ones].
So far 50 episodes (excluding some from the old tapes and Sonic is Running) of Adventures of Sonic has been listed and about 19 for SatAM (this will change if you are reading from the future). I still highly recommend the Shout Factory DVD box set (that's a beaut and worth it) but if your DVD player doesn't work with the discs or ordering online is too risky, there's your alternative. Oddly the company doing it is like the British version of Shout Factory (they both release CDs and obscure TV shows) that do shows like Henry's Cat and Bananaman. So British fans of Sonic (such as Sonic Stadium who are okay afterall, Sonic HQ, Sonic Anime [yes Doctor Sonic, I am reliable and report it like you usually do] or anywhere else), spread the word.
Back on topic though, I had a strange feeling that there is no concept art for the show. Glad to hear that the masters look good. If I get a chance, I might contact some writers of the show for some ideas. |

Member since: 2/19/2007 | | Attn; B Ward | First off, I just want to say thank you to Shout Factory in general for releasing so many Insanely Great box sets... from shows I remember as a kid; Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff, Mario... to newer things too like Home Movies and Greg the Bunny. I don't know if you personally had a hand in all of those, but the older ones really mean something to someone who grew up with a single parent and only really had TV in his free time. With the very few friends I had, TV was the main focus in my life alongside video games; and the Mario and Sonic cartoons were significant as well since they further personafied two of my favorite icons.
But getting down to business with the AoStH set, I have a few questions/suggestions myself. It's unfortunate that a sturdy, intelligent AoSTH community doesn't exist for much help, but I hope you can find enough people to gauge how to approach the release.
As far as my personal interests or hopes on these sets...
- I'd love to see a gallery with some high quality images of all the main characters; Sonic, Tails, Robotnik, Scratch, Grounder, Coconuts, etc.. maybe a couple of other tertiary characters like Von Schlemmer, Wes Weasley
- Maybe a couple interviews? I would have LOVED to have some kind of word from John Baldry from doing Robotnik's voice, I was saddened to learn that he passed away in 2005 (http://www.johnbaldry.com/)... He made Robotnik real, the voice was utterly perfect, delciously articulate and ferociously vile at the same time. All the voice actors for these old cartoons were great, the actors did such an amazing job and giving the characters life.
[Tangent time] I've become very disgusted with the recent (last 8 years) Sonic games, and that latest Sonic X cartoon because they gave Sonic a voice, and it's TERRIBLE. Not only that, but Sonic is now perfect, Tails is this brainless sidekick, and Robotnik (no wait, I'm sorry, Eggman... *gag*) is some prim and proper kinda-bad enemy. Back in the early/mid 90's when Sega of America controlled Sonic's advertising and marketed the character/franchise, they painted Sonic as a hero, but he had an obnoxious attitude ("Dude with a 'tude").. he stood for what was right, but he had flaws; he was impatient, full of himself, sarcastic... he cared about his friends, but he was still more "believable", if that makes any sense. Now, he's some goody-two-shoes sap who's all about teamwork. Similar thing happened with Robotnik, where he was marketed as almost the epitome of evil back in the day, he's now just some random, not really imposing nemesis to be foiled.
[back on track] Jaleel White did a wonderful job in BOTH cartoons (we'll leave Sonic Underground out of this, that wasn't his fault)... it's unfortunate that everyone will just remember him as "Urkel", though. I would love to see some kind of word from him for creating the voice of one of the most beloved and popular characters ever. When I see anything Sonic-related to this day, or when I'm reading the Archie comic series (which continues the SatAM storyline), I STILL hear Jaleel White's voice echoing in my head. I entertain the idea of these people being tangible, accessible, and appreciative of the people who have grown to love them for the work they've done (Just like Captain Lou from the Mario Super Show).
- Maybe some music scores, if possible? Like, just a section on the DVD that lets you go and listen to the different little ochestral pieces, and character themes (like, I loved Robotnik's theme, and the theme that played whenever Sonic was getting down to business anda lot of stuff was going on.... and of course the opening/ending :P ). I don't know if you have access to the original audio, or if everything has been thrown out, and you're just stuck with what's in the final masters.
I ramble a bit much, but only because these shows really hold a big place in my heart. I'd love to see them done right. I WILL say, don't cram too many episodes together, it will require way too much compression... the Mario Super Show, for one example, although the masters themselves were pretty grainy, the compression still killed some finer details. AoSTH had very crisp, vibrant, and clean animation and it would just be a shame to dull it down with too much compression :/ Also, fish around a bit more to see what kind of artwork you can get for the box... the Sonic community is a weird place, full of briliantly talented people, and other people who are rediculously immature, oblivious, and who just generally don't grasp any concept of professionalism either in themselves or interacting with other people... not to mention, their art kinda just sucks. Two people in particular, if you want to stay in the fan community, have some great work.
http://forums.sonic-cult.org/index.php?showtopic=2504 Requires registerring to view this thread.
http://chadthecartoonnut.deviantart.com/ Primarilly SatAM work, but i'm sure he's capable of more.
There aren't too many people who draw Sonic who haven't applied their own drastically stylized techniques to it, or who aren't really crazy furries (hope you haven't been scarred from dealing with this fanbase). You could maybe even see if an artist at the Archie Sonic group might be willing to do an AoSTH style piece.
I'm done for now, can't wait to see this release, and I've already got SatAM on order :P |

Member since: 2/19/2007 | | Attn; B Ward | | Also, just a note on the compression... you can leave some more room available on the discs for the actual episodes if you don't include the opening animation for every episode. Just have the opening as a separate single video stream that plays before any episode you select... the opening never changes, so there's no need to replicate it 6 or seven times. You'd just pick an episode, the dvd structure would tell the DVD player to load the opening video stream, then go to the video stream of whichever episode you wanted to watch. Companies that release box sets of tv shows never seem to realize this, but it's just another way to maintain as much quality as possible. |

It's great to know that I can soon own such wonderful memories of my childhood, and as such I will fully support the releases of both Sonic shows. I can say the same for personal friends of mine as well. I'm sorry to hear that the fanbase for The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is so underrepresented, but I hope to see all episodes make their way to my DVD rack.
Thanks again Mr. Ward and continue the excellent work. |

Member since: 1/20/2007 | | Any more news? | I just want to know is there any more news about this box set? Seems have gone a little quiet lately but at least SatAM's getting good press lately from Amazon. Oh yeah, another thing is that I never get to hear the full version of Sonic's Song (from episode 11 Sonic's Song) due to sound effects and voices covering some of the words.
milesdx: Not a bad idea, but it would be a bit too fiddly as the feature length version of Quest for the Chaos Emeralds is slightly different to the episodes (the feature length just cuts where the episode titles are minus the Sonic Says and it is really obvious). |

Member since: 3/21/2007 | | RE: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (AoSTH) | I've heard that DiC almost made a second season of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, but decided to make a second season of SatAM instead, and I've heard that they made one episode (NOT the Sonic Christmas Blast special) before pulling the plug. Unfortunatly I know nothing else about it. Maybe you could ask DiC about it, and see if they have anything, B Ward.
Also, it would be way past cool if Milton Knight did the cover art to all the volumes. |

Member since: 2/10/2007 | | RE: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (AoSTH) | I was thinking...for a while, DiC was selling a package to international companies called "Totally Sonic." Information is as follows:
"Responding to an ongoing demand in the marketplace for brand value programming, DIC Ent. will offer 91 half-hour animated episodes in the TOTALLY SONIC! package, which includes a private collection of never-before-seen episodes available for the first time to international buyers in all major language versions, at booth 17.01 during MIPCOM.
TOTALLY SONIC! includes digitally re-mastered, color-enhanced versions of original episodes from SONIC THE HEDGEHOG and SONIC CHRISTMAS, with new contemporary music and main titles. Additionally, DIC will unveil SECRET SONIC, an all new director’s cut episodes of SONIC."
This article was written back in 2003, but it'd certainly be something interesting to ask DiC about. |
