shout needs to take chances

Shout factory has released nothing more than mainstream material for the longest time, guaranteeing prominent sales. Just look at most of the popular titles such as sonic, mario bros, cops, and other popular DIC titles. Those types of shows would expect huge sales and ratings. But there are less noticable shows that are equal or better than the popular ones. When are they going to release some of their B shows?

Shout has done all they could to such degree with most of their main titles, they're due to change directions and take some risks. I understand there are licensing/legal issues to some shows, but the ones that are free of restraint should be in DVD production with much authority.

So what's the problem?

In fairness, releases like C.O.P.S. have not done well in sales, so I'd say it was a pretty big chance.

As far as "the problem," I don't know.  Perhaps you could give me a list of appropriate titles that fit into your list of "B shows."  I will say, however, that this is a business and a relatively shaky one at the moment.  Not just Shout, but the bulk of the industry.  We can't go releasing titles that are guaranteed to sell few just because you want them.  Those aren't "risks."  Those are suicide missions.  It costs a great deal of money to make these sets and we need to see it come back to us, if we're to stay alive.  Do you have some titles handy that will do that?  If so, we're willing to listen and explore the options.

This is just my opinion, but compared to other companies that put out toons on dvd, Shout hasnt put out the highest selling by far, no offense to Shout i own wuite a few Shout titles, with the exception of maybe SMBSS, and SatAM, which i know from B Ward saying how they sold, they have put out multiple series that never went past vol 1, and the others that they put out in the last year or were only single vol releases that were like 24 episodes total, just from observation, an again i dont mean this in any way offensive to Shout, but i think its obvious they had trouble pushing a lot of "A" grade toons, i think if they tried or any company for that matter tried to market "B" grade toons and shows they would be asking to lose money....just my opinion.

RE: shout needs to take chances
Well, this is just my opinion.
But I'm pretty sure the vast MAJORITY of titles Shout puts out involves 'taking chances'.
Old Sonic and Mario cartoons aren't a sure thing.  Oban isn't a sure thing, neither is Medabots.  Freaks and Geeks wasn't a sure thing.
Sonic SATAM was cancelled after 2 seasons.  Medabots was sort of popular, over 5 years ago.  Freaks and Geeks lasted half a season.
I doubt Jace is a sure thing either.
The vast majority of Shout's stuff involves risks I'd imagine, it's one reason I like getting Shout DVDs, they treat the shows that you half expect won't even get ANY release as if it were just as important as anything else.  They also do listen to what we have to say, Brian converses with all of us about problems that come up, our ideas for shows, and when I had a complaint about Oban that was legitimate for me (and possibly others) he did what he could to try and fix it.

I'm not quite sure what else you want from them.

The worthy title(s) that could benefit shout and fans would be the acqusition of Alvin and the Chipmunks. I could've sworn DiC owned the rights.  Yet, I dont know. But if DiC has them, I recommend looking into it.

My secondary options were Biker Mice from Mars and Double Dragon, most of the older shows...

So it's not really about taking chances, but about them getting the shows you want?

RE: shout needs to take chances
Brian is totally right you take a chance whenever you release a toon on dvd, there are examples of like BCI putting out He-man and WB putting out Thundercats, i mean those fan bases are super strong they were guaranteed to sell, but some toons are a whole lot more of a risk than others. Months ago someone else suggested biker mice from mars, and i personally do not like about 97% of any 90's toons, i am a 80's toon fan, toons in the 90's in my opinion got really cheesy, 80's toons had more grit to them, they were tougher and more realistically based. But i looked up biker mice from mars again on wiki and youtube.com, and even though it said it had a rehash in 2006 of episodes....i respect everyones opinion, but personally the title of that toon is corny so is the premise, theres quite a few toons that in premise tried to rip the 80's and early 90's TMNT toons, i am sure some people would buy biker mice, but that would go for practically any toon you could put out, at least some would buy it, but how many is the question......i mean Shout and other companies have struggled i think to push more "mainstream" toons and by mainstream i mean toons that stick in peoples mind from years ago or toons with a notable fan base.

RE: shout needs to take chances
DiC doesn't own Alvin and the Chipmunks, but honestly, it's far more "mainstream" than any of the shows we've released already.  Would it be beneficial to us financially to acquire it?  Probably and probably not.  Would we sell a lot?  Absolutely.  But would be make money?  Eh.  Maybe.  The problem with Alvin and the Chipmunks is the amount of popular music we'd have to license.  We'd never make a profit, because we'd be paying royalties out the ying yang.

Double Dragon is another title that's pretty popular.  I mean, it was spawned from a really successful video game franchise.  Not sure if we could get the license to it, but again, it wasn't DiC.

And I really don't know anything about Biker Mice From Mars.  I'll look into it.

I'd say Shout takes a chance lots of times. I mean, yes they do mainstream, but lots of it is old stuff, and in general people want the now. Heck, when I mentioned medabots to my friends I got a few "wow, that old thing?"s and "the 90s? Are you serious? Lots of people don't even remember it.
