Member since: 12/27/2007 | | Ironside completeness | | I recently purchased season 1 and plan on purchasing season 2. I immediately noticed with episode 1 that the voices of the major characters, Ironside, Mark, Ed, and Eve sounded a bit "chipmunkish" ie. voices were obviously sped up due to compression in the analog, not digital realm...no big deal, but should explain the decrease in time. |

I watch all of second two when I was on medical leave in October and I was quite happy with the set. I think you'll be happy with the set, I'm hopimg the sale of Ironside season are good enough to justify release of the thrid season . Any comment B Ward on possiblity of Ironside season Three? |

The speed up is quite minimal (about 4%) and unless someone has exceptional hearing it will not be noticable to many people. I would have preferred non-compressed episodes but that was Universal's doing not Shout's. In my opinion, Shout did a tremendous job with these releases.
All episodes are complete from what I can tell. I have both sets and think S2 looks even better than S1. Universal did not go back and do new transfers from the original 35mm prints but these look quite good nonetheless. High quality is very important to me and while these releases aren't as sharp as what CBS/Paramount has released for some of their late 60s shows I didn't expect them to be. Still, I'm very satisfied with these and hope that more are coming. |

When cutting it up into two one hour episodes for syndication, you have to insert an extra set of opening and closing credits, and a recap for "part 2". In order to do this, you have to cut some of the story to compensate for the used up time.
With Universal giving Shout the two part syndication version (probably because they never mastered the original two hour version to tape), we are getting less than the full original product.
Acknowledging that Shout may not have any say in this matter, and that I will continue to purchase all remaining seasons of Ironside if they are released, I would hope that Shout has reference materials to know what questions to ask the studios when getting these materials (this show and the others you release.)
It would have been interesting to know what Universal's answer would have been if you had asked for the original two hour version. Ironside had a number of two hour episodes (and some genuine two-parters as well) during it's run, so this is going to come up again with future seasons. |

Yes steve you confrimed my my belief that Shout was making the best high quality lemon aid out of Universal's tried old syndication transfers lemons. It also goes a long way to explaining some of the gainy wash out appearance of some of the night shots, but ironside s1 and s2 never got so bad its unwatchable , like some of night scenes in the disappointing second half of S2 of the Have Gun Will Travel set. In fact the second half of S2 HGWT was so poor Ive been relucant to buy S3 HGWT due too how poor the dvd transfer quality on S2, plus it look like paramount has abandoned HGWT after S3. Hopefully Shout will be rolling out with s3 of ironside soon (or atleast announce a release date) because s1 and s2 of ironside were such a blast I'd love to see more.

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: Ironside completeness | It's good to know that one of the episodes was incomplete, Actingman. Thanks. Unfortunately, to answer your question, Universal was the source for the masters and these were the only ones available in their vaults, so it appears as if a master for the original "uncut" two-hour version of the episode no longer exists.
I'll keep an eye on future volumes and I'll be sure to inquire when I see air dates that imply a two-hour episode.
Thanks for the heads up. I want only the best sets to be made and I can't do that without the approval of the fans.
