Select when a lot of shows still aren't getting finished by you? Why should I pay a premium ($30 or more plus shipping) for a Shout! Select title anymore when I know a show still won't get finished? A burn on demand program like Warner Archive would be much better for finishing titles. |

Unfortunately I think it's been said that the normal pattern in DVD releases is that fewer people buy each subsequent season after the first one. So if season 1/2 wasn't that successful to begin with then by the time you get to a 4th or 5th season you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel looking for profits. It's frustrating for the hardcore fans, for sure.

Taking that into account, mathematically, we work out a series of projected sales. Sadly, while the expected number of sales may decrease, our production costs remain the same. When the cost of producing the set outweighs the amount we expect to make back, we have to decide against spending that money. I'm afraid it's just the way business works. We can continue to make the sets as long as there proves to be a large enough demand. The demand for the last season we produced appears to have been...low.

It was supposed to be a way to help finish shows not popular enough to remain at retail, but it just isn't happening. I don't see how you are going to keep getting people to pay premium prices for Shout! Select DVD sets when a lot of your Shout! Select shows still aren't being finished. Can we do anything to change it, i.e. what does Shout! need for this last set to be pushed through? Would a petition with enough e-signatures on it help? Do you need people to write you letters? Can we do anything to convince Shout! to have the last season be released?

The only problem is that most people tend to make up excuses (it's too expensive, I'm waiting for all the seasons to come out). You have to keep on encouraging more people to buy more copies, so that the distributors will be heard loud and clear that yes, there is a demand. |

I guess, if you consider putting out the DVDs for four seasons of a series that otherwise would've NEVER been released by a studio and allowing that show's fans to prove themselves as a viable market a "failure," then sure. I guess we are. I can assure you that absolutely NONE of the onus should be placed on the show's fans who didn't buy those four seasons.
Calidreams_love, unfortunately e-signatures don't always translate into sales. The best possible way to prove that there's a demand for a fifth season is for more folks to buy the fourth season. After all, I'm doubting many people choose to buy the fifth without having owned the fourth season first. Unfortunately, as of right now, I can say that there aren't many out there with season four in their collection.

When VCI released volumes 1 and 2 of Bruke's Law, they were strong sellers, yet Fox, for some reason, wouldn't let them have more episodes at a reasonable and realistic price, and they still won't. |

So I come here and read the posts... I have to comment.
Like Jake said in season 3, We fans need to "Shut Up and Listen"
Brian never said it won't come out ever, but for now it won't, because not enough of us bought season 4. Shout Factory didn't fail the show. The fans did. Shout Factory at the very least saw the show's potential and started the DVD line of the series.
I love my tv shows. I am a fan of a science fiction show called Sliders. When that series came to DVD around eight years ago, I was very excited. But it took many years to get the first four seasons on DVD. From season 4 to season 5 it took over 4 years to be released on DVD. It took fans four years to buy enough of the earlier seasons, to get the company who makes that DVD series, to produce Sliders Season 5: The Final Season on DVD. It just came out January 17th 2012. The show originally aired in 1995.
I myself don't own season 4 of California Dreams... yet. This error will be corrected, when I receive my next paycheck. But I am a proud owner of the first three seasons. I don't think I saw season 4 or 5 when it originally aired. Life got busy for me then, and my favorite character (Matt Garrison ) moved away and left the band. But when I bought the season 3 I remembered the great music and episodes, even without Matt there. So I look forward to watching season 4 and hope we fans can share this amazing show with our freinds, thus making new fans and selling more copies of the show, including many more copies of season 4!
I don't work for Shout Factory, but I have to say this too.
Brian is trying to keep us informed. In this world we live in, he is a rare person. Let's not shoot the messenger or the company he works for. Let's just shoot our orders for season 4 of California Dreams to them, so it doesn't take 4+ years to get season 5 made for us! I hope to have that in my collection soon! So let's rally up the fans and show the Shout Factory executives that they backed a great and profitable show! It's up to the fans!

Occasionally, a studio will opt to to complete it on their own or hold it back for more money. These occasions are fairly unfortunate. But since I'm not in business affairs, I don't know the nature of this particular deal, so I don't know if we do or don't have the license for S5. I would assume so. Not sure.
As for international shipping, it must be understood that we legally only have the right to sell these DVDs within North America. NBC-Universal has licensees all over the world and could stand to make more money as those DVD labels do exactly what we did and pay them for the license. Therefore, we can't legally sell to foreign countries. That being said, I know plenty of people overseas who've found ways to have these sets imported.
Matt, I do appreciate the understanding and kind words. Hope you get the chance to enjoy S4 when you're able to get it.

Strangely enough, every show that I've loved as a kid has either never been released, never will see a release (Werewolf), or get released for a few seasons and die out before they're done (WKRP, California Dreams, Benson, Silver Spoons). As for WKRP, I totally see the reason because of the music licensing, but still is extremely disappointing. I'm hoping and praying that all of these shows eventually see the light of day and get a release or finished.
Also, if Season 5 does come out, might it be possible to see a soundtrack with all the songs on it, including the season 5 songs? Even if it doesn't get released, I'm sure if you at least release a CD of the songs that everyone would love it. I know I would. |

I can't speak for everyone here, but I'd actually be willing to pay more for the final season if it would help Shout recoup some of the production costs. I am a completest when it comes to my DVD collections, even often buying sequels that are not up to par with their originals.
California Dreams definitely does not fall into that category I mentioned. I really loved this show and want the finale on DVD. If more people would be willing to pay more, would that help?

I would buy extra copies of S4 to boost sales to try and get a release but we dont know how many copies would need to be sold to make it reasonable to realease S5, therefore we might end up still not getting it.
Brian what do you think of this idea? Is this a solution that might work ? I understand the business side of things and know that you can't justify all the work that goes into making one of these sets when the prediction is a loss in profit but please understand how important it is to the fans. Maybe we could pay some kind of deposit as a show of faith that if you make this we will buy it.

Brian, I also echo the sentiments of christhn, nicola, and blykmyke. I would be willing to pay extra for the final season if Shout! chooses to put it out. I am also a compulsive "completist" and would really love to have that final season as part of my collection, especially for a show that I enjoyed very much.
I am also willing to buy/get others to buy copies of Season 4. However, I wanted to know what your approach is. Is there a "number" you need to hit (e.g. once 4000 copies are brought, then Season 5 will be considered for production), or is it more of a rate thing (e.g. at least 2 copies a month of Season 4 must be sold over the course of a year)?
Thanks for keeping us posted, Brian! Please ply us with more information about what we CD fans can do to get Season 5 off the ground and into production. |

keeps the fans happy, keeps your returning customers happy
