Daria
I would love to see Shout! Factory release DVDs of all the seasons of the classic MTV animated sitcom Daria.

And I'm not alone:
  • Over 4,000 people have voted for Daria at tvshowsondvd.com, making it the third-most-asked-for show, behind only Batman and The Wonder Years.
  • More than 26,000 people (yes, that's not a typo - more than twenty-six thousand people) have signed a petition asking Viacom to release Daria on DVD.
  • 88% of fans who filled in the survey at fansite The Irony Maiden say they would buy every season if it came out on DVD. 96% would buy at least one season.
  • Many fans have written to MTV Home Entertainment asking for Daria on DVD.
  • Pirated Daria season sets have been selling on eBay for large sums.

Please, Shout! Factory, get us Daria!

You're the outfit that can get it done!
Shout! Factory is exactly the kind of outfit that should be creating such a set. I can testify to that from just the past week's viewing, where I have been enjoying my purchase of your handsome, feature-filled DVD re-release of "My So-Called Life."

You managed to do a new set of music clearances for "MSCL" within about six months, the single trickiest obstacle for a "Daria" set. You took that entrepreneurial risk, in advance of sales, one that MTV and Paramount Home Video haven't yet been willing to do with "Daria."

I admire that gutsy attitude on your part. And having seen the splendid result, I'll likely reward it soon with the purchase of even more of your sets.

The underrated "discerning pop-culture geeks" have long admired "Daria" and its well-turned, hilarious, memorably cast, surprisingly well-animated comedy. You'd make a killing on thousands of ready buyers, as MUK's links above fully support.

We've been itching to throw dozens of dollars each at MTV for such a complete, music-cleared, adeptly-produced set, but have been rebuffed for years. We'd rather throw it, by now, at you!

There's been a years-long effort to put this show on DVD. MTV ignored the fans, but so far, we've refused to go away. If Shout Factory puts the show on DVD, they'll get all the money we would have given MTV...

I'm with them. It's a mystery that Daria hasn't been released on DVD, but Shoutfactory would be an ideal publisher.

RE: Daria

I would buy Daria DVDs in either season or whole series format, as well as an unedited version of the series finale movie, Is It College Yet?

This was a delightful series that deserves a chance to continue reaching new audiences, and a chance to give the established audience something more than aging videotapes of the original broadcasts to watch.  Please pick up this show for DVD distribution.

RE: Daria
I agree that Daria is a series that's right up our alley.  Unfortunately, it's an MTV-owned show.  Which means it's ultimately owned by Paramount who's particularly stingy when it comes to giving their property to licensees like ourselves.  And when I say "stingy" I mean "they just don't do it."  And, for whatever reason, they've not been interested in doing it themselves.  Could be for a number of reasons, music clearances being one of them.

Not sure.

We'll look into it further, but it's not something I'd hold my breath on Shout! Factory being able to pull off anytime soon.

If a miracle happens and there's a slightest opportunity to release Daria on DVD, DO IT!

Very best of luck, Brian!

Its a matter of bafflement to me that Paramount haven't cashed in on Daria either by publishing the DVDs themselves or licensing someone else to do it. The perfect product would be complete with the original songs, but there'd be a market even with generic music. It's the quality of the writing that sets the show apart, after all.

Thanks for the prompt response.

I just want to say I would buy any Daria DVDs, seasons or full series, even with substitute music. As long as it's Daria, I'd buy it.

RE: Daria
Any luck yet, Brian? And if not, is it worth trying again? I read a news item at tvshowsondvd.com that indicated some rights owners are now getting more realistic about licensing deals. I'm hoping that Paramount are among them!

All but Is It College Yet, that was THE WORST ever created. It had had no right to exist.
