Heres An Idea For You

I am always reading on various sites that due to low sales the rest of the series is not going to be released ie C.O.P.S and Gargoyles.

These are classic shows loved all over the world so why not make these and other classic tv shows region free and make the whole world your market place.

Most people own dvd players that handle both NTSC and PAL anyway.

It just thought it was a better idea to due run and ship worldwide then keep all your eggs in one basket.

Does anybody else agree?

The UK and USA are supposed to be close allies but here in the UK we seem to get forgotten about when it comes to classic TV shows or are about 12 months plus behind

They don't have to distribute if those countires just sell to them via the web, heck they could open a store on ebay and sell them there

Lots of people from foreign countries have bought our DVDs, many of which are region-free.  However, if we're contractually obligated to region encode the discs, we simply have to.  These aren't things we're legally allowed to ignore, just to sell a few more box sets.

It is so easy to get a player that plays all regions that it does not really matter anymore although one has to know what to do and some are not willing to go down that legal path due to taboo and complications. I have imported from other countries but that has not stopped me from getting the US releases when they finally arrive.

I understand Mr Ward that your hands are tied if you have to region encode due to the contract your are in, its just funny in this day and age where there is talk of world peace (bar a few countires) that something as simple as a dvd is encoded so that someone outside the USA is not meant to watch it.

This is doubley funny when most people own a multi-regional dvd player anyway.  The only thing that puts people off is importing it into their country not the encoding. (Which makes it even more funny that i started this thread.)

I have imported a few R1 dvds but the site i get mine from hasn't got a massive selection mainly the upcoming movies and tv boxsets.  Just looked for c.o.ps but no joy.

The last thing to say (at the moment) is the final thing stopping people ordering off line is a lot of people are put off due to online fraud and they are worried about their details being stolen. People are creatures of habbit and will normally only use sites they trust a few of which either don't stock the titles they are after or its for sale off someone (like ebay/amazon marketplace) and you are unsure whther to buy or not. (or they not got a credit/debit card)

So my idea of region free was so that the dvds could be physically stocked in shops so joe public and walk in go "i remember that" and kerching we got a sale. (knew there was a reason i started this thread)

Well, the big problem with brick 'n' mortar stores carrying our DVDs overseas is that we're not allowed to distribute to them.  Our discs can be region free all we want, but that doesn't mean a store in Europe is allowed to order stock from our plant.  If we're not legally licensed to distribute a title in a foreign country, that store then has to find some other way of stocking the products.  It's often too big a hassle and much easier to point the consumer to an online retailer like Amazon.
