I read that the fire destroyed the news studio and destroyed a bunch of footage of old anchors from the station and that Nickelodeon has duplicate copies of the masters anyway from the time the show aired on there.
Well thanks for finally answering the one question that's been bothering me for awhile. I feared that may have been part of the holdup, besides the rights issues. Thankfully, it's not.
I belive that The Parents Televison Council does not want You Can't do that on Television released because of possible child abuse that happened on the show!
Please hate The Parents Television Coucil!
They are doing what best for children's Television!
I remember there were several episodes of the show that were only showed once (or not at all in some markets) because they were too controversial. One episode titled "Adoption" had a scene where the parents adopted a kid and made the kid clean their house and then wanted to send the kid back to the adoption agency but found out it doesnt work that way and they had to keep the kid. lol. A bunch of adopted kids called Nickelodeon very upset about this episode Another banned episode was titled "Divorced" I believe.. By 1987 there were 15 episodes they werent showing anymore including all 13 episodes from 1981.
