Commercials and advertisement.
I was wondering something.  Has there ever been any advertisement of any of these DVD sets on TV, Radio, etc. other than on the disks themselves?  I see previews for other series on certain disks, but never on T.V.  Any reason for that?

RE: Commercials and advertisement.

Very expensive to advertise on TV?

The only DVD sets that I've seen to be advertised are either big movies, a cult TV Show (Columbo, Magmum PI) or a popular one (Simpsons). There has been rare ones like Hong Kong Phooey, but usually it is them three.

Plus Shout is a small studio compared to WB or Universal which their marketing budget might be the same as the entire budget at Shout (manufacturing and so on).

It is phenomenally expensive.  In fact, a single broadcast of one commercial could wipe out our entire marketing budget.  And, when you really think about it, you don't see many DVD releases advertised.  Sure, there are the big movies and the occasional TV series, like Supernatural, but those have a tendency to air on their home networks.  We're dealing in product that often doesn't have home networks anymore.  It's very hard.  Instead, we have to rely on the internet, trailers on our other box sets, and fans' word of mouth (which is, without a doubt, the most important).

True, I never really see DVD advertisements on TV today. The cartoons on DVD that I do see advertised on TV nowadays are the more current ones like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Ben 10. I have seen commercials for Animaniacs/Pinky and the Brain Volume 3 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 4 but only like once. Even Disney doesn't advertise their cartoons on DVD, like Ducktales and Darkwing Duck, well I've never seen any commercials for any of these DVD sets for these great Disney cartoons, especially since todays generation gets shows like Hanna Montana and That's So Raven, kids today should know what the real Disney is.

Hm. Maybe the guys at Jetix can do the funding for the Box Sets of Medabots, Pucca, and Oban Star Racers. I mean, those three shows DO air on Jetix. Well, at least Pucca and Oban Star Racers do, but not Medabots, but they might work something.

Today when I had my TV on, I actually saw a commercial for The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3 on DVD today. Just a question to B. Ward, how'd you manage to put that on TV? Does this mean your whole budget is wiped out?

Blueluigi, I have to admit, you have me--and our marketing department--completely stumped.  No one here created a television commercial for the DVD release of The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros. 3.  It might be possible that someone from a retailer included it in their spot, but...I just can't figure out why.

Like all of our titles, we did cut a trailer to include on other sets, but to the best of my knowledge, as well as those in the marketing department, there was no commercial cut for the purpose of television.

I'll look into it further.

It might be the official trailer, I'm not exactly sure though.

I think it might have been Cartoon Network. I honestly don't remember what channel I saw the commercial on but I saw it yesterday morning.
