Member since: 7/20/2011 | | Can you provide an update on Season 1, Part 2 of "Melissa & Joey"? | Hey everyone,
I know there is already an existing thread regarding Melissa & Joey; however, after weeks of waiting for an update from Brian Ward, I decided to create my own. I have contacted tvshowsondvd.com, and they too have yet to receive a response from the studio. In a catalog, the set was described as a 3-disc set, yet the artwork that has surfaced online says it's a 2-disc set. I would think this is an error, because 18 episodes and special features, if there are any, would most likely warrant a 3-disc package. I apologize for the constant nagging, but I am a HUGE fan of Melissa Joan Hart. I know Brian is busy, but I hope he will find the time to clarify all the final details.
P.S. I had requested 3 webisodes in the old forum (Found here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Melissa+%26+Joey+webisodes&aq=f). While I still want those, I have also come across something on the show's facebook page. It appears to be outtakes with the stars singing and dancing to please the crowd.
It can be found here:
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=705354317185
I would greatly appreciate any feedback, and would LOVE these special features! |

I have yet another question for Brian, when he gets a chance, of course. I love this show, and sometimes I want to watch an episode, but I don't want to get my DVD set out, so I watch them on either Hulu or ABC Family. I don't know how I stumbled onto this, but I was reading a Sitcoms Online review of the first set, and saw the run times, and I compared them to the ones on the web. Why do the episodes on the web appear to range anywhere from 5-25 seconds longer? I can't imagine the Shout! episodes are edited... so, are ads or extra breaks calculating into those longer run times? I assure you, I don't have this much time on my hands. It was just something I stumbled upon, and was wondering what was up with it. Hopefully, Brian will write back soon, with answers to all my questions and requests!

Our original intent was to release it as a 3-disc set and it appears as if those retailers' web managers went with our original selling guides' information. The set, however, is 2-discs. The good news is that the quality is still high. Though, bonus features had to be dropped. We're still looking at ways to get that out to you, but it won't be included on S1.2. If this sells well, however, and ABC Family decides to bring the show back for a second season, I'll do what I can do get that disc count back up.
As for the run times, I'm guessing the ad time is calculated in. The episodes we have are not cut.

Member since: 7/20/2011 | | RE: Thanks, Brain, for a quick response! | | Thanks a lot, Brian. It sucks that retailers feel they can't push a 3-disc set, but if you say the quality is high, then I believe it. Everything I've bought from Shout! has been excellent! I think retailers are effecting every studios' releases as far as disc count goes, because a show with a 24 episode season used to be released as four discs, but in recent years, has turned into three. Also, thanks for trying to include bonus material this time around, but I'm holding it to you that future releases will see some awesome special features! (ABC Family has already announced a second season for 2012-13!) And, the run times question was stupid on my behalf, but I'm glad to hear that they are the original broadcasts! |

Member since: 12/27/2008 | | RE: Thanks, Brain, for a quick response! | | Well, here's my stupid question. Why do retailers care if a set is 2 or 3 discs? Isn't Shout the one that pays manufacturing costs? Packaging should be the same size with one more disc, as I'm surprised at how many discs get squeezed into a slim set design these days. |

Member since: 7/20/2011 | | RE: Melissa & Joey | | It really doesn't matter as to the size of the case, rather it has to do with adding that extra disc. Another disc means a slightly higher price, which in turn means retailers feel less people will buy it. |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: Melissa & Joey | For the most part, it comes down to retro vs. contemporary. That's obviously not the case here, but price certainly is. In this economy, DVD and Blu-ray sales are plummeting. Retailers need to make a profit like anyone else. And while you're the ultimate consumer, they're the ones who set the rule of supply and demand. We sell to them; they sell to you. So we really have to give them what they want. They want a set that costs no more than a certain amount. That means a lower disc count. Through their numbers (which don't actually lie), more 2-disc sets leave the store than 4-disc sets. Can't argue with that. $19.99 vs. $34.99 or more? So we give them what they want, so that they buy more from us and, hopefully, sell more to you. If they don't sell what they buy, they return it to us (and we return their money) and they don't buy subsequent sets, which, in turn, means we can't afford to produce them.

I'm curious about "Part 2"'s episodes. Will they be complete? After all, there are 18 episodes (ranging from 19-21 minutes each) on two discs. Are the episodes edited, or will they too be the broadcast versions? Did anything have to change from what was on TV to fit these episodes onto 2 discs? Sorry, but I'm obsessed with this show. Thanks, in advance! |

Member since: 7/20/2011 | | RE: Hey, Brian... | Yeah, I'm pretty much reassured. You'll have to forgive me for being skeptic. It's just, so many series today have suffered the fate of edits, which is a shame.
On yet another note, will the episodes be in air date order, or production order, like they were on the "Part 1" set? I'm hoping production order, mainly because Joey Lawrence grew his hair back, and since ABC Family didn't air them in the correct order, his hair went from shaven to a full head of hair. Regardless, thanks for your awesome work on this set!
P.S. The set is coming out on October 4th, right? On the new releases tab, it says September 13th. But, the season finale doesn't even air on ABC Family until the following night, September 14th. So, I'm guessing this is a fluke. |

Member since: 1/21/2010 | | RE: Hey, Brian... | Bitrate determines the quality of the audio and the video on a digital medium. While the maximum amount of space on the disc is determined by the format, usually around 8 GB for a dual layer DVD and 50 GB for a dual layer Blu-ray, the bitrate is determined by the amount of compression a file requires to fit within those confines.
It essentially works similar to EP/SP settings on a VCR. The higher the bitrate, the higher the quality but also the higher the file size, thus less material will fit on the disc. A lower bitrate will lower the quality somewhat, depending on how low the bitrate goes, but the bitrate can be adjusted depending on which areas need higher bitrate (like high motion action scenes with lots of explosions, etc.) and which areas a lower bitrate would suffice. The only time the quality would really suffer is if somebody tried to cram a single disc with an obscene amount of material.

Member since: 7/20/2011 | | RE: Hey, Brian... wrong episode titles on the new "Melissa & Joey" set! | Hey Brian,
I was on amazon, looking at the reviews, and someone posted that their set had incorrect episode titles. Their set said,
"The Other Longo," "Waiting for Mr. Right," and "Joe Knows," for the first three episodes, when they should have been "Enemies with Benefits," "The Other Longo," and "Waiting for Mr. Right." Is this mistake on all the sets? Mine is expected to arrive by Saturday! If this is the case, will you be issuing a corrected disc? |

With the series returning to ABC Family on May 30th, I was wondering if the "Season One, Part Two" DVDs were corrected yet or not. My set, and I'm guessing others' as well, had 3 episodes titled incorrectly. The first three episodes of this set should have read, "Enemies with Benefits," "The Other Longo," and "Waiting for Mr. Right." I am such a HUGE fan of MJH and this show is amazing. I don't know why, but minor mistakes like this bother me for some reason. Could you please let me know? I am more than willing to buy another copy! |
