Father Knows Best
I'd love to see Shout! Factory get their hands on this property from Sony.  Any chance we will see it in the near future?

And the beauty of SF picking the show up is that they will actually follow through with a full run and not quit after a season or two like the big studios do if something doesn't sell super high amounts.

"Father Knows Best" is a superb series that DESERVES to be released on DVD -- all 6 seasons.

Thank you, Shout! Factory, for making my day with this exciting news.

This appears to be great news; another one of the classics is getting a release thanks to Shout! Factory.  But I do have one question . . . . assuming that "Father Knows Best" is released by S!F, will full length, unedited episodes be included, or will we see a release similar to S!F's recent "Best Of The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" where edited, syndication episodes were released?

Guys, don't let my comment serve as any kind of official announcement.  That's not what I do here.  I've not said that Shout! Factory will be releasing this title, and I've certainly not said to look out for it anytime in "early 2008" as I've noticed reported over on The Home Theater Forum.

If there are ideas and/or suggestions for shows or bonus material on shows, I'd love to hear them.  With our love of the Ozzie & Harriet collection we released earlier this year, Father Knows Best could be a great title for us.  But for now, I can tell you with GREAT certainty that I am not working on a Father Knows Best collection.

Thanks for the clarification, Brian.  I understand that what you said did not represent an "official" announcement.  Having said that, let me add that I do hope Shout! can get FATHER KNOWS BEST onto dvd for us, because I think you guys do a great job with classic television.

Let me also add to Bob's comments about hopefully getting uncut episodes.  That is, of course, always preferable.

Well, I'm very disappointed to read that it's NOT in the works. A lot of folks would be excited about this one.

Including comments by Elinor Donahue, Billy Gray & Lauren Chapin would, of course, be great, too.

Just off the top of my head, for bonus material there's the US Treasury Film done with the FKB cast. Also the 2 reunion movies done in the 70s. Another possible bonus might be to thrown in an episode or 2 of Window on Main Street. That was the series Robert Young did after FKB and before Marcus Welby. A very rare show which is owned by Rodney-Young Productions so it should be easy to get ahold of.

Can we now move this topic from TV we would like to see over to TV we will see? Great going SF. This is a major pickup for you guys. Now if you can only work on the Donna Reed estate and get that show as well.

Please, please S!F, take a look at the prints that you are being supplied with before pressing to DVD.  I have to believe that most fans of vintage television series would like to see FKB in complete, unedited form rather than syndication prints as was the case with S!F's release of "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet."  I would hate to see that situation repeated with this new release.  If the only prints that you can get are syndication prints, then do the right thing and say so on the DVD slip case.  The earlier that you can confirm that full length prints will be used for this release, so much the better.  Thanks for bringing this classic to DVD!

Yes, many, many thanks for releasing FKB. It will be great to have this wonderful, classic TV show on DVD.

I would like to second the request for the Donna Reed show...

RE: Father Knows Best

Let me second my vote to making certain the episodes are the unedited versions, not the syndicated ones. I have an episode of Father Knows Best in both the unedited and the syndictaed versions. The episode is "Kathy Makes Magic" from I believe, 1956.

The uunedited episode is 2 or 3 minutes longer and opens on an entire scene that is completely missing from the syndicated version. It shows both Margaret (Jane Wyatt) and Kathy (Lauren Chapin) in the Anderson's kitchen, with Kathey wanting to show her mother the new magic set she got in a trade with a friend. It sets up the entire episode and is not merely a throwaway scene.

Once I watched an online interview of Jane Wyatt, recorded in 1999. She made a comment that many of her scenes were edited out or cut short. I wondered at the time if she was exaggerating a bit, but after seeing the unedited and the syndicated versions I now know what she means!

Now that the press release is out (and the set sounds GREAT) -- can Shout! tell us if they're using the full-length 25-minute episodes or the chopped-up 22 minute syndicated versions?  I sure hope it's the former -- since this set is being put together with loving care otherwise.

Glad to see you took my suggestions for the treasury film and Window on Main Street extras. I just want to add my thoughts that I hope you are going back to the original 35mm elements and not using the cut for syndication tape copies. We don't want another repeat of the Ozzie and Harriet fiasco.

RE: Father Knows Best

I'm adding my thanks to Shout for bringing this to market and preparing such an appealing package of extras.

In addition to the others, I'd also like to see confirmation that full length episodes will be used for these releases (assumes that Shout was given access to complete episodes).  Hopefully the Robert Young Estate has taken better care of these that the Nelson Estate.  Unfortunately it has been the case time and time again that when rights to a movie/series reside with an actor the preservation of same is often abysmal.  The Roy Rogers film library is a mess because of this and some of Bob Hope's films exist only in substandard form for the same reason.  Even some of Hitchcock's best films had to be rescued from near extinction because he controlled the rights and the master negatives were allowed to deteriorate.

For what it is worth, I'd rather see a release of full length episodes in lesser quality than cut episodes of higher quality.  Even better, perhaps any missing scenes could be reinserted where necessary and where available.  There would be a visual difference but I'm sure consumers would appreciate this attention to detail.

I should also point out that if Shout is provided only edited episodes that would be disappointing and unfortunate but I understand that Shout would not be to blame for this.

We're working on confirming the completeness of the episodes.  The masters were provided directly from Robert Young's grandson, so we're hoping they're the complete episodes.  Still working on it, though.

Brian, thanks for the update . . . . this is what distinguishes Shout! from the major studios . . . . your willingness to keep the fans/customers updated.  We'll appreciate hearing more as you get closer to the release date.

Sincerely,

Bobhug

Would love to see the Father Knows Best reunion telefilm on DVD, too.  The 1977 Christmas reunion (Father Knows Best:  Home for Christmas:  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319404/ ) was an amazing, feel-good film.  It had comedy, drama, a few vintage clips from the TV series, and much more.  It ran for a number of years on tv, but then disappeared.

Peace and Love,

Hermey

Do y'all (i.e. Shout! Factory) know if that U.S. Treasury-commissioned FKB un-aired 'episode', "24 Hours in Tyrantland", is Public Domain?

That episode was licensed as part of the deal with Robert Young's estate.

Pretty cool episode, though, huh?

Shout Factory.  What a big dissappointment.  Here's a chance to get a really good set of FKB and you dropped the ball.  You apparantly have access to the original footage of the FKB episodes, so why not produce a set with the complete shows instead of making your own 22 minute edited versions.  Just watch episode 1 and you cut probably the best scene where Jim attempts some of the dance steps in book with the book in his hand and his says "Glasade, Oh I love The Word."  At least that scene was in the crappy syndicated versions already available taped off of regular TV.  Do the complete original broadcast versions and charge extra. People will pay it.

RE: Father Knows Best
Just watched the first 5 episodes of Father Knows Best.  What a hatchet job.  Credits on 2 of the 5 were incorrect.  William D. Russell directed the entire first season.  Peter Tewksbury didn't come along until later.  2 of the episodes show Peter as director.  How hard is it to attach the correct credits to each episode.  It's at the end of each episdoe real.   Might sound pickey, but to a real FKB fan it's important.
