| Two shows that changed my sleeping schedule |
| Many years back, when I was 21 or so, TV Land began airing Chico and the Man at midnight. I am too young to have watched the series during its initial run, but I was immediately hooked on this show by James Womack, who I knew as the creator of Welcome Back, Kotter. For a few weeks I dutifully tuned in to this series every weeknight, until TV Land reshuffled its schedule -- and Chico and the Man landed in the 3 a.m. time slot. This is the point at which I decided it was worth the effort to either try to stay awake until 3, or set my alarm so that I could get up at 3 every morning. In so doing, I discovered another series that aired at 3:30 a.m. that I also fell in love with: Maude. Unlike Chico, I had heard of this one, and was not disappointed with it. I am a big fan of this style of sitcom, which deals with hot social issues in a stageplay-like format, and both of these shows kept me entertained into the wee hours of the morning, though I admit I fell asleep on several occasions before they were rebroadcast on cable.
Consider this my vote for further seasons of these wonderful series, if they should become available to Shout! Factory for licensing. |
