Return of Godzilla (1984)

This is basically just a thread dedicated to Return of Godzilla or as you probably know as Godzilla 1985. But I strongly think that the original, unedited Japanese version with English subtitles should be warranted a DVD release especially from Shout! Factory since I heard very good things about their Gamera DVD sets. Of course the problem is, the North America rights are very complicated. Probably due to multiple parties, but just in case; perhaps Brian Ward can resolve a few things? I have faith in the man.

Unless there's no possible way?

If Shout! can get the rights to this film, I'd like to see a deluxe 2-disc DVD (and ideally also Blu-ray) release of both the Japanese and American versions.

But I think the North American home video rights to this film might belong (at least in part) to Image Entertainment, since they have a deal to distribute Lakeshore Entertainment's library, which last time I checked included this movie.

I just checked the Image Entertainment website and apparently Anchor Bay, which has become evident that AB don't care about the genre fans anymore, did sell off the rights of virtually all of the New World Pictures titles to Image Entertainment, so we're getting new re-issues of a boatload of New World Pictures on DVD and new Blu transfers of some titles, under the banner of the Midnight Madness series. The bulk of these will be released on Sept 6 with the next ones in the series on Sept.20. And these titles in the series (Hellraiser, Hellraiser 2: Hellbound, The Hills Have Eyes, Stephen King's Children of the Corn, Dead Heat, and Vamp) will be available on Blu-Ray. Sorry, no mention of Godzilla 1985 on the website for upcoming releases.

They have the North America rights to the film? What are they doing sitting on it? Sell it to Shout! Factory, I'd love to see how they'll treat a Godzilla film.

Actually, I've since learned that Lakeshore's rights to Godzilla 1985 have expired.  It seems the rights are in limbo at the moment.

I think now's the perfect time for Brian and Toho to fix the rights issue.
