Medabots?
I saw a press release that announced with Shout's releases of Oban and Pucca that you guys would be doing Medabots also.  Will it be in Japanes or English, and will it include the 3rd season that wasn't released in the USA before?

I am currently working on the English version of Medabots.  Right now, we're releasing the complete first season (26 episodes) over four discs.  You can expect that to hit stores at the beginning of the year.

Thanks, it's a good show, hope there is the possibilities for some extras on it.

Just noticed the press release said 52 episodes, guess that means no season 3.

Whoa, that came out of left field! I wasn't aware how the rights worked for Medabots. I figured Disney got the airing rights after Fox Kids was dissolved. I love how Shout! continues to expand their horizons and go after a variety of series. Another great movie, Brian!

Hmm, thought of a question.

Any chance the Japanese Opening might be on the set as a bonus feature?

You've just unleashed the Medaforce upon us! I'm not worthy. "It's time, to KISS YOUR BOT GOOD-BYE! MEDAFORCE!" I wonder if you'd ever find an ample opportunity to release TransFormers: Robots In Disguise, because that would really be great!

Well, Medabots is a good staple of the decline of Fox Kids, and Sam & Max: Freelance Police was a good example of great Fox Kids Programming, next to Power Rangers, which is released by Disney. Besides, it's not like Disney would bring forth a Jetix Home Entertainment line with shows like Mon Collie Knights, TransFormers: Robots in Disguise, and Dragon Booster.

Medabots was FOX Kids' highest-rated new show of 2001.  Kinda hard to look over that.

Besides, while I'm producing Medabots, I'm also working on Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors, so you get the best of both worlds.

Remember, just because you didn't grow up with the show doesn't mean others didn't and look at it as fondly as you do series like M.A.S.K.

I've run into a bit of a dilemma, gang.  Those who know my box sets know I'm a HUGE fan of bonus material.  "Give the people more bang for their buck," I say.  And for Medabots...

I've come up with nuthin'.

Sadly, because Medabots was an acquired title, not originally produced by Nelvana, they don't have any of the original concept art, storyboards, or the series Bible or any of the other things I tend to use as great special features on my sets.  So, it is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the great possibility that there won't be any bonus material included on the Medabots: The Complete First Season box set.

Still workin' on it.  Hoping things will change shortly.  It'd better be shortly, because I'm running out of time very quickly.

For the Astroboy 1960 and Kimba the White Lion DVD releases Madman included as bonus features a merchandise gallery.  Since Medabots had a lot of toys released maybe you could do something like the Astroboy and Kimba sets.  Also the sets had Character profiles, maybe you can do a quick profile for some of the Medabots featured in season one.

RE: Medabots?
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the characters or their Medabots to write those profiles and Nelvana doesn't have access to any of the original information from which I'd normally pull that knowledge.

I've also been working on getting a hold of the original Japanese language tracks for Medabots.  Sadly, while the Japanese versions are available, their edits don't match the English versions, so I won't be able to put them on the set.  Now before everyone gets up and arms and purists get on top of their soapboxes, let me explain what this means...

Japanese is obviously a very different language from English.

There are times, particularly in animated series or movies, when it makes sense to either cut down a shot or add to it in order to make the translation fit the lip flap.  Otherwise, the dub won't fit the characters' mouths.  This clearly adds or subtracts frames from the total running time of the episode.  Therefore, even if we're only talking a few frames at a time, if you simply place the Japanese language track on top of the English version's video, by the end of the episode, the lips won't move in synch with audio at all.  This obviously isn't an option.

Unfortunately, we can't put two versions of every single episode on the disc.  There simply isn't enough room.

In short, it looks like Medabots: The Complete First Season will only be available in English.

On a good note, though, I've been watching more and more of the encodes and they're looking really sharp.  This is an awesome example of an animated series on DVD, in terms of visual and audio quality.  I think you're all really gonna dig it.

I'll keep you up to date.

Why not have Chris McFeely or godofchaos do it?  I know Chris McFeely wrote the official profiles for a few Transformers DVDs, and godofchaos from WtW seems to really like the show.

Would having fans do it be possible?

To bad about not being able to use the Japanese tracks.  But perhaps the Japanese Opening and Closing credits could be used as extras?

Realised it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Obviously 4 disks isn't enough to do 2 of each episode on a diskfor a 26 episode season, is there any possibility it could be done with flipper disks like Ronin Warriors was? English on one side and Japanese on the other, or maybe like what was done with Teknoman, that after doing dubbed DVDs to do a seperate release for the Japanese if sales and interest are high enough?

Or even just including the first episode in Japanese as a bonus feature on one of the disks?

Unfortunately, creating DVD-18s--using both sides of the disc--is the same as creating two DVDs in terms of work and price, so creating "flipper discs" would not be possible on this title.

Sorry.

I have no idea what Medabots are, but i agree "flipper" discs also known as dual-sided discs are annoying, not to mention they look cheap with no disc art, although for some things i know why they are used, a lot of Stephen King movie dvds are dual sided cause films based on his books are so long and complex. Dvd 18's are cool, they put Stephen king's The Stand on 2 dvd 12's(single sided with disc art) so they hold a lot and have great quality, cause they fit 366 minutes on two discs

To the best of my knowledge, we've never actually done a DVD-18 (dual-sided disc).

As for the link, it all depends on what it's for.  If you're advertising, I'd rather you didn't.  If it's to bring up a point, I'd say to go for it.

I'm not a fan of flippers either, just seems like a waste to not have the materials in the set when they exist and are available.

But what about the other idea?  Including the Japanese Opening and Ending (the credits), and/or the first episode in Japanese as a bonus?

Maybe you can see about having ADV give you the special features. I mean, they're probably willing to let go of the features, are they? If not, maybe an interview with a voice actor or two, like Metabee's Voice Actor, Joseph Motiki. That might be good.

In response to what meredith65 wrote, it's fun to go back to and enjoy the 80s cartoons once in a while, and release them on DVD, but as companies such as Shout! Factory go through the back catalog of classic cartoons, the options that you have before you tend to dwindle away. Companies like Shout! have to broaden their horizon a bit, such as releasing select anime series now, to be able to give themselves more options, and promote sales.

An interview with Motiki would be awesome, Metabee really is the thing that makes Medabots more then just another monster/robot 'battling' show, especially in the dub.

And maybe you can go be the original Japanese Episode order. You can tell WHICH episode came after which, with J before the number on TV.com's episode listing.

RE: Medabots?

Ok I dont mean this offensive at all, and i'm not taking sides, but i agree with Merideth that yes I wish Shout would concentrate more on 80's stuff, yeah i mean Medabots(dont really know what it is, cause i'm 26) is from what i gather a toon i guess japanese in origin, that aired around 2000-2001? I mean 6-7 years ago isnt exactly "retro" especially if its not even a decade apart from us now. But on the other hand I understand Shout is going to branch out alsoand not just stick to one time period. Being a kid of the 80's I wish Shout would pull some more stuff from the 80's like MASK, the real ghostbusters, GI Joe, etc.......the rest of COPS perhaps......

RE: Medabots?
Trust, you sure do worry about offending us.  We've got thick skins.  We can take it.

So, here's the thing... A lot of the titles you guys want us to focus on simply aren't available for license.  So now what?  Abandon animated titles altogether because we're not allowed to have M.A.S.K.?  There were a lot of great animated series that came after the toy-crazed 80s boom.  And, while I didn't grow up with 'em, I've come to appreciate them a great deal.  I think Medabots is a pretty great show when you sit back and watch it for what it is.  Looking back at some of the better animated series from the 80s, I'm struck with one major thought... "For as much as I loved these growing up, the stories are close to unwatchable now."  Not the case with some of the shows I'm just now discovering.

You could find the same.

As for the episode order for Medabots: The Complete First Season, we're going with Nelvana's production order:

Stung By A Metabee
Return Of The Screws
Running Scared
The Legendary Medafighter
The Old Man And The Sea Monster
The Gimme Ghost
Cyandog Bites Back
For Better For Worse (Pt. 1)
For Better For Worse (Pt. 2)
Mystery Medabot
Phantom Renegade: Unmasked
Ban All Medabots
Meet Your Meda-Maker
The Spy Who Robattled Me
I Dream Of Hushi
Metabee Vs. Rokusho
Use The Medaforce
Fifteen Minutes Of Shame
Enter Rintaro
The Ace From Outer Space
Me And My Shadow Sword
Dude, Where's My Ma?
X-treme Measures
The Road To Ruins
Beetle Mania
The Mother Of All Robattles

I accidentally made this post as a separate thread. Yeah, I know I'm a dumbass, I just haven't used this forum before.

I really enjoyed Medabots when it was first on, and I just want to make a request. It relates to the episode order, so I should explain for people who don't know about this. Medabots was a 52 episode anime in Japan (followed by a horrible series that was season 3 in the dub), but because the dub wasn't guaranteed to get more than a 26 episode season, the dubbers restructured the show so that one of the main plotlines from later into the show could happen earlier. Which is somewhat good, as Medabots takes AGES to get the main plot going otherwise. You just have to ignore the plotholes created by the first 10-20 season 2 episodes, by assuming them to take place before the big plot stuff. However, there are a couple of problems with this. Most of the early episodes kept for season 2 were filler, although I would argue that one, "Dance with the Mantis", included some important enough character development to belong in the first season. The big problem occurs here, almost exactly when the main plotline gets going:

Fifteen Minutes Of Shame
Enter Rintaro
The Ace From Outer Space
Me And My Shadow Sword

As you can see, following Fifteen Minutes of Shame, three episodes are skipped, which I think really screws with the pacing of the show at that point - they talk about all these challengers who will be wanting to battle Ikki, but it never really happens. Anyway, more important is that in between the last two episodes there, the episode "Bridge Over Troubled Squidguts" is meant to occur. This isn't optional, it's a vital plot episode. Me and My Shadow Sword actually recaps one of the events that happened in that episode, while "Dude, Where's My Ma?" makes a direct reference to something else that happened in that episode, which we haven't been told about. What this means is that if you leave out Bridge Over Troubled Squidguts, viewers are going to be confused as hell. They'll probably think an episode is missing from the set, and be pissed off, having no idea what happened. So even if you have to go with the dub order, I really hope you can at least make that change. If you have to remove an episode to do that, you could always just put Ban All Medabots as one of the first episodes on the season 2 set instead. It's completely useless to the plot. Running Scared is useless in that season, too, because it introduces a minor character whose only major roles are in the second season anyway (and a minor one in Ban All Medabots).

Although to be honest, there's no reason to keep the dub order anymore. You have all 52 episodes, and the plot only makes sense if they're in that order. The only reason they were originally shown out of order was to make sure some major plot could get into the first season, just in case that was the end of it. Episode 26 is a good finale episode, too, though. In the very least, do what you can to make the plot make sense. I don't know why they left out an important episode, though, as the plot makes no sense without it. Instead it's just shoved into season 2, where it makes no sense. You can't watch the show in that order.

That's why I think posting the first 26 Episodes from "Stung by a Metabee" to "Use the Medaforce," fillers included, should be put in the box set, so continuity errors won't ensue. Just refer to the lists I provided on an earlier post. I'm sure Nelvana might be able to comply with THAT request.

With the boxart out (nice boxart) and a release date I was curious if the set will end up getting any extras.  I know probably not, but I'm curious so figured I'd ask.

If not I'm still hopefully we will get the OP and EDs in the second set.

Unfortunately, since Medabots was an acquired title for Nelvana and not original content, they didn't have access to any bonus material.  However, we will have a sneak peek for an upcoming title in which I believe heavily: Oban Star-Racers.  The complete first episode, "A Fresh Start," will be available on disc 4 of Medabots: The Complete First Season.

That must've been Jetix's thinking!

Actually, it was mine.  This is a title I want to see do well, because it's a really solid story and some pretty great animation.  Oban Star-Racers deserves a bigger audience and maybe Medabots: The Complete First Season can help us get it.

They'll be an episode of Oban on Medabots season 1? SWEET! I got Medabots pre-ordered as a Christmas gift, and I enjoy Oban. That'll be a nice bonus!

BTW, I was so happy when I found out you guys were doing this. I loved Medabots when it was on TV and it's gonna be fun to get back into it.

Hey Brian, found Medabots, nice looking set.

I haven't had a chance to go thru all 4 disks yet, but I was curious.

Is the Oban preview from the uncut stuff you guys got later on, or the earlier edited master?

Also, I realized that no one literally asked about this.

Does Shout only have up thru episode 52, or do they have all 91 episodes (I know it had been said 2 seasons, but the season count was different depending on where you lived.)

RE: Medabots?

I just finished watching all 4 DVDs! Well, except the Oban Preview. I did take a quick look though. I think it's awesome you guys are keeping the original opening song. ^^ I loves my new DVDs.

Is there any news about when the second season DVD will be out? And like asked above, any chance on the other episodes from later seasons?

I'm not really into medabots but i saw something really weird and i was wondering if someone could explain it to me. I was at Bookstore that also sells movies. there I saw the Medabots shout factory box set. not to terribly unusual but heres the thing, I saw it on store shelves at least two weeks before its schedualed release date. Could someone explain this to me?
