RE: The Centurions.
N8, I missed your post here about this (probably because I've been 2 states over for a few days due to a family medical emergency), until a reader wrote in to TVShowsOnDVD overnight last night mentioning it.

I extensively follow the Warner Archive posts on Twitter and Facebook, and related feeds such as the Hanna-Barbera one.  I especially look at the answers the studio gives to reader questions.  I can't say that I've seen any mention from WAC (or comparable studio-sourced feeds) saying this about Centurions.  I just finished go back through several of the feeds, back to the beginning of last month (April), looking to see if I missed something.  If so, I still can't find it.

Not that I consider this to necessarily be news, yet anyway, for TVShowsOnDVD (at least until a release timeframe is offered through official channels; WAC has said on their feeds about several titles - like Pac-Man, for example - which didn't materialize in the end).  But still, just to satisfy my curiosity, would  you mind giving me more info about where you spotted this info?  I hate to think I overlooked it!

Thanks in advance.

RE: The Centurions.

It was said on twitter on I believe March 12th of this year.  It is possible that it could have been said a little before then, but that was when I noticed it.

I kept a copy of part of that conversation that somebody had with Warner Archive.  Somebody was talking about a few shows he wanted on DVD.  The last part of the conversation was this:

WarnerArchive: Yep. Later this year
Question: Extreme Ghost busters or Centurions?
WarnerArchive: Centurions

Just so I am clear, PacMan is not going to get a release?

RE: The Centurions.

This confirms what I posted earlier.  From Warner Archive's Facebook today:

Yes, we own Centurions, and it is most definitely in the works from WAC.

RE: The Centurions.

Very much looking forward to the Warner Archive release of Centurions.  It was a great toyline (the only one I managed to keep my stuff from) and the show was enjoyable.

It'd be nice to see Centurions get the live action movie treatment, assuming there are not rights issues.  Centurions has a great premise, I think it could adapt well -- especially with the advancements in the hybrid real & CGI effects nowadays.

Excellent news, N8!  I never got the chance to see this one, though I do have the short-lived comic book series from DC.  Very much looking forward to it!

RE: The Centurions.

From Warner Archive's Facebook on if Centurions will still come out this year:

We're still working on that. We hope to make it by Xmas. We've been delayed by film element problems. However, there's still a good chance we may have the issues resolved shortly.

RE: The Centurions.

That's an interesting bit of news -- I would have thought that Centurions (like many 80s cartoon series) would only have video tape masters surviving. EG back in the 90s when Hallmark owned the Filmation library they created PAL masters of He-Man and The Masters of the Universe and She-Ra: Princess of Power and ditched the film elements.

If Warner really does have the film masters for Centurions we could be in for one of the best looking DVD releases of an 80s cartoon series.

RE: The Centurions.
Yeah, unlike many other 1980s animated series, I'm pretty sure Warners does indeed retain the original film elements. The series, when originally broadcast, clearly featured video masters wherein the film-to-video transfer was noticeably grainy and the picture had that dark, soft look present in many contemporary series, like how most of the 80s DIC shows still look, for instance (owing to the junking/misplacing of the original film elements).

When Centurions was rolled up into the "Hanna-Barbera" library around the early-to-mid 1990s, resulting in the removal of the original Ruby-Spears logo after the end credits, the series had clearly been re-transferred from the original prints, as the picture quality was now, in comparison to how it appeared in the 1980s and early 1990s, pretty much crystal-clear.

If we're getting an improvement on even that quality, I'll be seriously impressed! Here's hoping they actually have a plan to get all 65 episodes out as quickly as possible - I think we've had enough incomplete 80s animated releases already!

RE: The Centurions.

JOHN T, brilliant and meaningful analysis, but I'm now left wondering what's the problem with the "missing" film elements... and TOO BAD they will never did a blu-ray edition of this... :(
