Sell shows on iTunes if you don't want to produce DVDs
Hi. I signed up for this forum just so I could post the following message. I, too, am a fan of various shows from the 70s and 80s, with The Paper Chase being one of my favorites. I own Seasons One and Two and was hoping for a Seasons Three and Four, though I see that there are no plans at this time to release them. My point is this: I completely understand the apprehension Shout Factory has about producing DVD sets that may not sell that well to the general public. There is a great cost involved in producing physical copies of DVD sets, including manufacturing the discs, producing the artwork, deciding on the packaging, etc. All this can be avoided, and Shout Factory can make profits, by simply digitizing the shows and releasing them for sale on iTunes. That way there are no physical costs of releasing the seasons, no DVDs will be unsold and will sit in the warehouse, the fans will get the shows we want, and get most of the profits since Apple takes less of the profit margin than the retailers. It seems like a win-win scenario to me. Shout Factory, please consider this option. Who knows, DVD sets may eventually go the way of the 8-track tape anyway. Digital downloads isn't the future, and it's beyond the cutting edge. It's the present. If you don't wish to go through iTunes, why not have the Shout Factory Digital Downloads store? Individual episodes could be for sale as well as complete seasons. Thank you, Pete Ackarey Derry, NH

RE: Digital Downloads
I agree that this is the way of the future. As a collector, I await the brave new world with dread, and don't want to lose the opportunity to put something physical on the shelf. I support the release of shows that would get nothing otherwise in this format, and I have no quarrel with a multiplicity of formats - but I do worry about a stampede away from physical media and the resulting dependency on complex systems that our digital collections are burdened with. I have a number of digital video purchases from iTunes and find that I watch them once, as I do not like to interact with that delivery system. By all means, if it's digital or nothing, let's have something, just remember the collector mindset isn't so keen on a playlist instead of a shelf full of disks.

Excuse my ignorance on this topic, but if I buy Flo from I-Tunes can I burn the episodes to a blank DVD so I can watch on my TV set?

No, iTunes doesn't support the burning of DVDs from playlists. There are, however, two ways around this that I use to watch iTunes content through my home theater: 1) Connect your computer directly to your TV/Amp. Most computers have many types of audio and video outputs on them. I have a 24" iMac which I run directly into my home theater system. Then I can use the Apple Remote to control the computer (which is in a separate room) from my TV room and watch or listen to anything on my computer on-demand in full-resolution. 2) Sync the shows onto your iPod and connect your iPod to your theater system. If you don't want to run cable from your computer to your theater system, you can achieve the same thing by synching the programs to your iPod and using a short cable to connect your iPod to your theater system. The downside of this is that you can't remote control it (But you can make playlists from your TV shows, which means you can watch the entire run of a series without ever having to get off the couch). This is what I do when I travel. I load up my 160 GB iPod with movies and TV shows and connect it to the hotel room TVs via the RCA connectors.

Somebody else got it right. The DVD sets for "King of the Hill" seasons one through six have been out for years, but Fox was hesitant to release the rest of the series on DVD due to questionable demand, despite the existence of a very loyal fan base. As of last week, iTunes and Amazon.com now have the entire run of King of the Hill available as digital downloads. Please do the same thing for The Paper Chase.

iTunes requires us to have digital rights to a series, which studios are hesitant to grant.

Well then the studios are so selfish then. Think about how many more unfinished titles would finally be finished if they were willing to grant such rights.

And after Fox butchered the music in The Fall Guy and especially WKRP in Cincinnati, they don't deserve to release classic TV-on-DVD ever again.

Fox is the hands down worst studio ever in securing music rights.

I sure hope not. Bad idea anyway, most people positively hate this streaming or downloading thing and really want the physical product in their hands. Music is one thing, who knows where the CD's going, but for moving images it's quite another story. The format of DVD isn't going away anytime soon for the aforementioned reasons, I think. Heck, I even handle VHS on a daily basis still.

"No...that's impossible...".

I agree with the above post - fans of classic shows would want their favourites on dvd boxsets as collector's items. I'm all about dvd packaging, artwork, so on and so forth. I couldn't think of anything worse than watching my classic tv on a pc or through a usb on my tv.
