Member since: 1/7/2009 | | Snow White Movies Cross-Marketing for "The Charmings" | Brian,
Now that there are three upcoming movies and a new TV series dealing with Snow White, there has never been a better time to market "The Charmings" on DVD. Even if people do not remember this adorably unique show from the 80's, everyone has heard of Snow White and there will be much upcoming buzz about Snow White in the near future.
The Three Movies are:
"Snow White and the Huntsman" (starring Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen & Charlize Theron)
"Brothers Grim: Snow White" (starring Julia Roberts)
"Snow and the Seven" (Disney)
ABC is also creating a pilot "Once Upon a Time" with Ginnifer Goodwin.
At the time that the "Bewitched" film was released, Sony released "Tabitha" on DVD. Not many people remembered that show, but Sony went ahead and released it because of the similar content. Universal also released an obscure show called "She Wolf of London" because the had another movie being released that dealt with a werewolf.
Considering all of the above, combined with Shout's relationship with Sony, I think "The Charmings" would definitely be a success on DVD. I hope you'll pass this information on to your acquisitions department.

And thanks for the heads up on the Once Upon A Time pilot for ABC. That sounds great. And knowing that two Lost producers are involved is making me really psyched for this. Up until now, I thought either Wonder Woman or Terra Nova would be the TV highlight of the year - this could definitely change that.

And even though I liked Caitlin O'Heaney better in the Snow White role, I'd still be interested in having the whole show on DVD? With all of the Snow White projects coming up, it would be a perfect time to release it. |

Member since: 7/2/2011 | | Brian... | is there any way you can look into possibly releasing just the first six episodes/first season of "The Charmings," to coincide with all the upcoming Snow White madness? :) That would make an affordable set for consumers, and should be relatively easy to produce. Potential consumers who may not be familiar with the title may want to check it out.
IMO, the first six episodes were the best, and truer to the feel of a Snow White tossed into the modern world- and if they fare OK enough, then perhaps there could be justification to release season 2.
Would be very appreciated if you can bring this up again to acquisitions. Much thanks. :) |

Like stated above, at this point, a release for the first season (only six episodes) of "The Charmings" would be a good way to go, IMO. And if it doesn't sell well enough, then no need to move ahead to season two. Work some magic please, Mr. Ward- it would be much appreciated. :) |

Member since: 7/2/2011 | | Well, "Once Upon a Time" Has Premiered... | and I cannot help but think of "The Charmings" when watching it. This new show is a darker, dramatic twist on "The Charmings" (and encompasses other fairy-tale characters). I enjoyed it and will be watching.
Shout should take advantage of the cross-marketing and release "The Charmings" if this show turns out to be a hit. :) |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: Well, "Once Upon a Time" Has Premiered... | The problem with The Charmings is that very few people actually remember it. In an economy so bad there are riots in Oakland and Atlanta and more protests going on in NYC, I just don't think The Charmings is one of those titles that'll get enough people so excited that they just have to run out to their Best Buy to pick it up. Sadly, it's a show obscure enough that I think it would be incredibly difficult just to get retailers to buy it in the first place.
The US really has to start spending on things like DVDs and Blu-rays again before we can start focusing on lesser known shows. Otherwise, I don't think we'd sell enough to justify the cost of production.
But who knows? It was an entertaining show. I'd love to check it out again.

Member since: 7/2/2011 | | RE: Well, "Once Upon a Time" Has Premiered... | Thanks for the reply, Brian. As you may know, "Once Upon a Time" premiered to pretty impressive ratings- and held up very well in week 2. ABC may have a hit on its hands.
With the interest and forthcoming Snow White movies, you don't think there possibly could be a way to tie in viewer appetite for a Snow-White-themed series from the 80s? People looking for Snow White material would stumble across it and perhaps check it out, especially if the release was only the first six episodes/first season (which was superior to the second season, IMO- Caitlin O'Heaney was the more appealing Snow).
Thanks again for the reply and hopefully this could work at some point. |

Member since: 5/2/2007 | | RE: Well, "Once Upon a Time" Has Premiered... | Once Upon A Time also reminds me of a darker version of The Charmings. There's quite a few similarities.
While I think there's many people that do remember the show and remember liking it too, I think Brian might be right about how many would actually go out to buy it. Unless the fairy tale TV shows continue to do good (NBC's Grimm is doing well in the ratings too) and the movies end up doing great. In that case, then maybe The Charmings will make it to DVD.
But as someone who's definitely a fan of The Charmings, I can say for sure I'd never buy a set of only the first six episodes. The first season was good and the original Snow was perfectly cast, but the second season's episodes were far better. And for a limited series like this, there's no point in breaking it into two sets. |

Isn't there some kind of manufacture-on-demand that can be done? Or would that cost just as much to get the rights to do and all? |

I know Me and a few others brought this up sometime ago in this thread...nice to see there are others who would love to see the series released. I too think if there was a cheap way to do an on demand thing that would be one of the ways to go...I've counted 3 movies coming out in the next year with Snow White and 2 Fairy Tale tv series..I agree this would be a good time to try and market it. Theres also a chance to draw him some fans of the Reba sitcom seeing as Christopher Rich was a big name in both series. |

Member since: 7/2/2011 | | I Gather... | | there still has not been discussion on the show? Once Upon a Time continues as a success, and the two Snow White movies are out within months of each other this year. if there's doubt about interest in the show, there's always ways to drum up interest and take advantage of the Snow White "mania" as of late. :) |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: I Gather... | That's a pretty tall stretch. I can't imagine using the popularity and potential popularity of a fantasy drama on television and two fantasy features, one of which being being fairly dark, to market a rather cheesy sitcom from the '80s. You're doing fandom a pretty big disservice by lumping them all together like that. I, for one, was interested in ONCE UPON A TIME before it premiered and am interested in at least one of the two SNOW WHITE flicks. But have no interest in revisiting THE CHARMINGS. But, by your account, I should be primed fodder for it.

Member since: 7/2/2011 | | RE: I Gather... | Well, it may not appeal to all Snow White fans, that much is true. But some may be curious enough to check it out. Some episodes have popped up on YouTube (though not in the best quality), and I found some that I had recorded back when they aired.
As a Snow White fan, I'm always open to checking out Snow-White-related product, whether it's comedy, drama,. etc. I do understand that not all may feel that way, though. |

It would seem that the vampire craze is dying down and the fairytale craze is starting with alot of tv shows and movies in the works about Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Hansel and Gretel, and Jack and the Beanstalk, etc.. It should be mentioned though that it seems the more family friendly Snow White movie Mirror, Mirror is getting panned by pretty much everyone from the trailer alone so releasing The Charmings would still be a big risk. |
