Twas Shout Factory themselves who said they would never be released. This "Never Say Never" attitude is really gonna bite you in the butt when you realize that certain episodes just aren't going to be released.

Episodes 801-809
Fugitive Alien 1 & 2
Mighty Jack
Squirm
Diabolik
Episodes 111-113 (the Warner episodes)
At this point lets pray for some more surprises...
If they can get the rights to these episodes wed have some really cool sets

Member since: 7/15/2010 | | RE: Which MST3K episodes will *never* be released by Shout! Factory | The big question for the vast majority of films is profitability. As long as Shout Factory can release a 4-disc set for the standard msrp and don't do something to run afoul of the Best Brains folks or their own legal department, they're going to keep bringing us what they can. There are vast swaths (or however that's spelled) of episodes that, should Shout get a really good deal, they'd release in a nanosecond. Or at least at the standard rate. However, that all depends on the asking prices of the studios and/or rights holders.
Would they release the Susan Hart films? Sure, if she changes her tune about their value or sells them to someone else. Would they release the Lipperts? Sure, soon as they can figure out the American vs. Canadian rights issue. Would they release Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster? Of course, if they can sew up the deal with someone with full access to the rights, but I'd doubt they'd jeopardize any trust over it.
That said, I wouldn't be suprised if after the vast majority of attainable episodes were out that BBI shopped the concept to the big studios, letting them know which of their properties would be involved, and asking for a reasonable cut. Would it work? Who knows, but I'd love to see the Universal box sets come out, whether it's through Shout, Universal, or who knows who. |

In fact, the Gamera movies appear in these types of threads all the time as "never to be released" and just like that, it changed. Some idiot tried to tell me they weren't going to be released because they are impossible to get even after Shout! had already announced that they would release the Gamera episodes. Movie rights expire and change hands all the time, so while some episodes are less likely to make it to DVD than others, the fact remains the situation on rights for those can change for the better over time, especially since there's an offer of money involved for using those movies on the DVDs.

I don't recall you saying what I said "some idiot" had said, which was actually over on a completely different website for the record, and I didn't call him an idiot either over there though he probably deserved it given the way he spoke to me with completely incorrect information. Try reading more carefully and not getting your exercise jumping to conclusions.

I said someone had said to me that Gamera would never be released AFTER Shout! had announced it would be. And for the record they were insulting in the way they did it even though they were dead wrong. Since I've never had a conversation with you before I could not have been referring to you. The point I'm trying to make is it's statistically and realistically impossible for Shout (or any video company) to successfully liscence every single film featured on MST3K for video release. Historically speaking (I know there are acceptions to the rule) once a film is owned by a big studio (Sony, Paramount Ect.) It's unlikely that it will change hands. You can chart over 60 Mst3k films and you'll find that they've always been owned by the same company. And if you have the attitude of "never say never" (and i'm refering to everybody who thinks this), your going to be really disappointed when the well dries up.

I think if there are tricky episodes that I challenge Shout Factory to shoot for, it's the Universal films of season 8! Can you imagine 801 Revenge of the Creature? Uh.... |

We seem to be past the glory years of studios digging deep into their vaults for special features-packed catalog titles. If a major studio owns an MST3K'd film, and they decide it's not profitable or worthwhile to release the title on DVD or Blu-Ray themselves, they might be more open to licensing it out to Shout! Factory. Things change, and some titles that were once thought to be untouchable might not be so for much longer. If you look at Criterion, they've released some major studio catalog titles under their own boutique banner in the last year or so...Easy Rider, The Last Picture Show, Broadcast News, etc. Just a thought. |

Wonder what would happen if Shout were to approach the majors about the BOD titles (or if they have already)? |

Member since: 2/21/2011 | | RE: Which MST3K episodes will *never* be released by Shout! Factory | A few things to note...
1. Godzilla vs the Sea Monster... yes, what happened with Godzilla vs Megalon was unfortunate, however, it's worth noting that Sony is the US rights owner to Godzilla vs the Sea Monster. If Sony wants to license this title to Shout Factory for a MST3K set, I'm not entirely sure Toho would really have a say in the matter at all. And Sony HAS licensed movies out to other companies. The most recent release of Sony's Happy Birthday To Me was released by Anchor Bay/Starz. So, I'm not sure if we can say this particular Godzilla flick is in the same boat as Megalon, unless there are other issues I'm unaware of.
2. I think with Gamera opening the door for potential future 5-disc sets, assuming a licensing deal can be worked out, perhaps it'd be possible for a 5-disc, Universal Monsters MST3K set to see release at some point down the road...
801 - REVENGE OF THE CREATURE
802 - THE LEECH WOMAN
803 - THE MOLE PEOPLE
804 - THE DEADLY MANTIS
805 - THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE
If that worked out, perhaps a second, 4-disc Universal set could then be released.
614 - SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL
814 - RIDING WITH DEATH
815 - AGENT FOR H.A.R.M.
901 - THE PROJECTED MAN
3. Much like with Universal, if the rights could be worked out, there would be enough for a couple of MGM-themed sets (perhaps a co-branding with their Midnite Movies line?)
411 - THE MAGIC SWORD
516 - ALIEN FROM L.A.
519 - OUTLAW (OF GOR)
1012 - SQUIRM with short: A CASE OF SPRING FEVER
and
523 - VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS
623 - THE AMAZING TRANSPARENT MAN with short: THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES
704 - THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN
1010 - IT LIVES BY NIGHT |

After the sweet Gamera set and Time of the Apes and Mighty Jack getting a release, nothing is really 'impossible.' Sony could sell the rights for 'Sea Monster' eventually, along with MGM. After all, it's not like the films are getting any more valuable the longer they're being held onto, especially since they have been MSTed.
The Susan Hart films are just a matter of time in the same vein.

Member since: 4/20/2011 | | RE: Which MST3K episodes will *never* be released by Shout! Factory | Greetings,
Its been a while, but I was just wondering if someone could possibly provide a definitive update as to what MST3K releases are currently "not immidiately available". What this means is, any film Shout! has not already secured rights to and would require a a lengthy process of negotiation, and compensation with a particular film's studio, owner, or distributor in order to be included in any future release.
I am just beginning the list with the obvious candidates #212 (Godzilla vs Megalon) re-release # #213 (Godzilla vs The Sea Monster). *I know "Megalon" had a limited release on Rhino's volume 10, but I'm not willing to pay $100.00 + for this on the secondary market. I'd rather have a Toho approved re-release, which I know is next to impossible at this time. |

I have all the Godzilla films and have successfully managed to get a collection of all of them in anamorphic widescreen with Japanese audio (with the exception of King Kong vs. Godzilla which is an English dub, but still widescreen), but because of rights issues they come from four different regions! I was fortunate enough to start buying the box sets early on and I pre-order all of them, so I have a copy of Volume 10 (thankfully Rhino made Giant Gila Monster available separately for those of us who didn't need the 10.2 set). I have bootlegs of some others like Incredible Melting Man and Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, but like the Sandy Frank films I will happily replace my bootlegs with official releases when Shout Factory makes them available.
I have to agree with those who say "never say never." Unless you can predict the future I don't see how you can say otherwise. If you can predict the future, I'd appreciate some winning lottery numbers, ta. |

I didn't start buying sets until around 2008.
I do think we'll see ep. 213 come to DVD on an official release, but it'll probably be either on the last box set or as a single disc (either way, it's probably going to cost more than several arms and legs).

I think that's when it will become more clear what the real problem episodes are. I do find the whole issue confusing though. I mean surely some money is better than no money? I cannot see the majority of MST3K films being able to generate any revenue [em]outside[/em] of an MST3K release and as folk have noted with falling DVD sales rights holders are going to have to face the fact that many of their catalogue titles simply don't have that much value in the open market. This is a cult TV show and I'm personally willing to pay a little more, but there are limits and it's not like you cannot get the show elsewhere.
