I was wondering if that was something Shout! would look into. For example, my favorite soaps are The Young and the Restless and Days of our Lives and I think it'd be a cool idea to be able to pick up, say, "Best of the '80s" or "Best of the '90s" with 20 or 25 episodes from that decade highlighting big plot twists or special wedding moments or things like that.
As far as I'm aware, the only time daytime TV has made it to DVD was "Daytime's Greatest Weddings" and that was a print of something originally released on VHS by ABC Daytime. I think it's time to introduce special box sets for soap fans. Something along the "Best of *x decade*" line or "The Young and the Restless's Unforgettable Weddings" or "Days of our Lives Most Remembered Stories."
Because I'm a realist, I know these shows won't be released in their entirety, and quite frankly I wouldn't want all the episodes. But I know at least with my favorite soaps, Sony owns the rights and their entire archive has been saved. Why not cherry-pick the few episodes with the best memories and put them out there? :) |

I'm surprised there hasn't been a "Best of Luke and Laura" (even though it was on VHS...) or "Best of John and Marlena" DVDs... |

The short of it is that we've looked into it in the past and for one reason or another, it's something we've not been able to do. Doesn't mean we can't later. I'll go into it in further detail as soon as I can. I'm just so swamped with 14 projects, currently.
Thanks, gang!

Sadly, soaps are failing right now (there are few even left compared to even 5 or 10 years ago), but it sure would be neat, especially if they dug out old stuff. Many shows do not have full archives, though notably Days of Our Lives has an entire archive back to the first episode (which is why they often show so many flashbacks to even the earliest time periods). I don't know about All My Children, but I would presume since it didn't start until the 1970's that most, if not all, of the series still exists. |

I have seen that done by people on You Tube, however, I'd prefer to own remastered sets that are seamlessly edited together that advance individual storylines. The two daytime dramas I would absolutely love to own are One Life to Live and The Young and the Restless. If you haven't already explored this option in great depth, Shout! Factory, please explore this path. |

The cost of an editor and edit time (both are hourly) is enormous. It's so much easier to encode an episode directly from its original tape than it is to digitize footage into an Avid, edit it, output it to Digibeta and then encode from the new master.
