I wonder is the cut footage was all host segment footage. Wonder if the scenes cut from THIS ISLAND EARTH had riffs? |

In the original version, the ending was different. Mike and the 'bots made an elaborate practical joke in which they used the interociter to transmogrify a regular ant into a MutAnt (affectionately known as Scrotor), who promptly throttles Dr. Forrester. Meanwhile, Crow uses the chainsaw he found in Tom Servo's room to once again try to "dig" his way back to Earth. This was the version shipped to some film critics before the studio demanded they re-shoot the ending (too "scary".) It was finally shown to a public audience at the second MST3K convention, along with another deleted scene involving air being sucked in space a la Apollo 13.
Also cut was another host segment in which, during a meteor shower, the robots and Mike go back to the storm shelter (Crow tried to tunnel through space with it at the beginning), and when the air is cut off, the 'Bots run around heroically (and hysterically) to save Mike from asphyxiation.

At the second one they showed footage that was cut which was part of a story arc the studio did away with before release. That footage showed the scene where Mike is running out of oxygen. They also said the cut scenes would probably never be seen again. When you watch MST3K The Movie there are also parts that are so badly chopped one can tell something was cut from the film. It's only about 76 minutes in the end, shorter than a TV episode of the show. When they riffed This Island Earth live at the first convention, it wasn't nearly that severely edited. Watch the scene were Exeter uses the interociter to destroy the instruction manual at Cal Meacham's lab, it's so badly cut you don't actually see the ray blast the book, only the aftermath, destroying the story connection to the "host segment" where the same thing happens later on with Mike and the 'Bots. The movie studio really butchered the movie badly. Even so, fans loved it. Imagine what we could have had if it had had some support and a length of at least 90 to 95 minutes.
