"MANIMAL" (1983): R.I.P Simon MacCorkindale !!!

We need the 8 official episodes of "MANIMAL" + the episode of the series "NIGHTMAN" (titled "Manimal") featuring Jonathan Chase and his daughter!

The life of Simon should be honoured this way... bring back the Manimal once and for all !!!

I hear you, mate. I think it is about time Manimal saw a release on DVD. It's only 8 episodes, no music licensing problems that could stop this from releasing as this series featured only one song of Michael Jackson in the first episode: that's it. However, I feel quite sad that now we have missed our chance of interviewing Simon exclusively for a yet to be released DVD set. I don't think there is any interview of his that deals with Manimal as its sole focus. I hope Shout is able to dig up some on set videos if there are any.

Absolutely!  Simon MacCorkindale has been one of my favorite actors for years and it's really painful that neither of the two TV series I associate most closely with him, Manimal and Counterstrike, is available on DVD, nor do either of them seem to be shown on TV any more.  It's not as if Manimal is a forgotten show; it's one of the top 200 most requested unreleased shows on TVShowsOnDVD.com.  Please find a way to get this out on DVD!  (And let me put in a request here for Counterstike as well, though, of course, that really belongs on the 90s board.)

Wait wait wat guys, we need the 'NIGHTMAN' episode too, that's the proper Manimal "saga" ending !!!

So: 9 episodes, not 8.

By the way, everyone in the net wants this series on DVD/BD (shot on film?) so badly... Brian, please, let us know, we love SHOUT!

Of course Nightman episode would be a plus. I thought it better explained the lore of Manimal, however, there was a really comical statement on JC's part. Where he mentions a complex animal such as a human being should possess potential of less complex beings. I believe animals too have just as complex organic makeup as humans. I would have bought an explanation that perhaps dealt with spiritually connecting with other forms of life that exist in this world/universe, and thus assuming their form.

Yes, Brian. Come on mate, please respond to us.

Wolf,

Have you ever read scientist Francis Drake's theory of the morphic fields? That could explain Jonathan's powers, which are part "spiritual", part "biological". It's like the animal morphic fields (kinda spiritual) work on his biological structure from time to time...

I think Jonathan meant their neural patterns are inferior to ours, indeed.

We can explain his clothes which disappear by assuming they are "absorbed" by a parallel dimensional plane where he gains/exchange extra body mass too.

No I haven't, but I did look it up after you mentioned it here. Although, I think the theorist is Rupert Sheldrake. It sounds like he's talking about spiritual makeup of a unit, and that it's possible that a person through this "morphic resonance" can tune into other morphic fields and organize itself accordingly. Maybe I understood it wrong, but I'll take another gander at it. However, I do agree, animals for the most part have an inferior cognitive capacity than us humans.

His clothes were the biggest plot hole in the series. Not only in Manimal but also in Animorphs, another children's show about shape-shifting teenagers fighting intergalactic beings. Vanishing into another plane sounds like two different things even for something like animal transformation, as it strictly applies to the person, I suppose. The increase or decrease in mass could have been explained through cell-death and cell-replication. For example, when he turns into a hawk, his body mass starts to degenerate and new cells form themselves into a different being altogether. In similar scenario when he turns into a bear, his body starts to produce more cells, and thus organizes into a larger being. You know how some myths tell of a man turning into a werewolf by shedding his own  skin, thereby getting rid of the extra mass.

WHOA, it was Rupert, sorry.

By the way, the NIGHTMAN episode canonically showed us that the clothing disappears along with the transformation... now, since Jonathan is supposed to interface himself with the morphic fields, it's not that stretch of imagination to think he gains/exchanges extra mass with a parallel plane - that also explains why superheroes like Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Henry Pym can shrink or become bigger than their original mass.

Yeah, I guess it could work. But audiences need explanation most of the time, and when they don't get it, movies or shows come down with heavy criticisms. I guess its one of the reasons the show was canceled. Nightman episode though changed the way he turned into animals. In the original series, it was more organic, while in Nightman it was something out of Power Rangers: not to say it was bad, but I guess it was better than nothing.

O by the mate, I would love to hear your opinion (and of others as well) on a little alteration I made to Manimal pilot episode. Check it out on youtube, "Manimal Tangerine Dream Version". I thought Manimal always lacked proper music, and in some instances it was dull. So I went ahead and made some musical changes. I'm no expert at this, but I gave it my best.

Wolf, my lupine friend:

1- I think the NIGHTMAN episode implied that his transformations were ALWAYS going super-fast, and we were watching a "slow-motion" version of them in the 1983 series. Sort of a retcon.

2- Okay man, will see that. Keep in mind the 1983 series theme is the best ever commited on TV.

3- I suggested all Simon MacCorkindale fans in the world to come here and get vocal about Manimal.

RE: "MANIMAL" (1983): R.I.P Simon MacCorkindale !!!
1. But wouldn't that contradict with what was shown before? For example, Brooke in episode 2 whispers to herself "hurry up Jonathan" when he is turning, which implies his transformation did take quite a while. This point is reiterated in episode Breath of the Dragon, when Ty too shouts at Jonathan to hurry up. But I guess they changed it later on. Speaking of Breath of the Dragon, it was unfortunate he didn't turn into an actual dragon :). Well I wonder if he could turn into dinosaurs.

2. Thanks, mate :). The series' main theme was fine, well it was weird but in a good way. But episodic soundtrack was bit of a letdown. Well I guess 80s was just starting, so I guess they hadn't began usage of synthesizers (or was the theme already composed from synthesizers?).

3. Good work, Vanques. I'm trying to do the same. I e-mailed Cinema-Snob to make another video encouraging fans to write to Shout. I don't know if he has seen it but it would help if you wrote to him also. He has many fans so I guess he can spread the message faster.

Hello, It would be fantastic if we could get a DVD release of MANIMAL. The show was quite original. I liked it very much. I've been a fan of Simon MacCorkindale for 30 years, nearly all my life. If this release could include also NIGHTMAN, it would be perfect. Also, though it's not a 80's show, i'd really like to have Counterstrike on DVD. Why not ask for a general DVD release of Simon MacCorkindale's TV Show ? Thanks

His best of series DVD would be very much welcomed, but I think it would be little more costly than producing Manimal DVDs, which can easily fit in 2-3 discs. I don't know much about how these things work, but I can imagine Shout would need to acquire rights to 3 different shows then Manimal, Nightman, and Counterstrike.

But we need to hear from Shout, and they haven't responded yet. The only reply I ever got was that my mail has been forwarded to acquisition department.

I wouldn't mind a Complete series run of the show.  If they could get the Nightman episode, that would be the icing on the cake.
