The '80 season was a disaster, but you could package it with the first Eddie Murphy/Joe Piscopo season, then finish out the seasons with the all-star Billy Crystal/Martin Short/Christopher Guest season. The rest are Lorne Michaels' shows, so they could continue on Broadway Video. |

They seemed to have stopped with the fifth season, and I'm pretty positive they're not excited about investing in releasing SNL '80, a season with no stars, just people like Charles Rocket and Denny Dillon, with Eddie Murphy waiting in the wings. Maybe you could release just the 1980 season, for historic value and the eclectic musical acts that played during that run. Not to mention the infamous "F-bomb" moment. |

Member since: 3/21/2009 | | RE: SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (1980'S) | First of all, I should say that even as the "news guy" at TVShowsOnDVD.com, I have absolutely NO inside info about what's going on with the plans at Universal for "season set" DVDs of SNL - Season 6 and beyond. Nothing's been said, either on or off the record. And Uni has announced various other SNL titles for release around this holiday season (Best of 09/10 and A Very Gilly Christmas, among others), around the time we've gotten used to seeing the year's latest season set. So that certainly makes it FEEL like they may have "abandoned" the season sets for this show, since it comes at the time of a season that most people consider "sucky".
But keep in mind that Universal's not stupid. They know that the set will sell, just not as well as the others. And that the economy is still in the tank, so if they release it now then it will sell less copies than if the economy was better. So it's my guess (and JUST a GUESS!) that they might simply be taking a year off of the SNL season set releases, and hoping the economy is improved a year from now...enough to justify the selling of the "horrible" sixth season, and without angering fans by skipping around to other seasons and getting things out of order (a less the studio learned harshly when they tried jumping around with later seasons of Law & Order, as many of you will recall).
That's my two cents on what's probably going on. |

Besides, if he's really so confident that his seasons are better, he won't feel threatened by having the others out there and letting people judge for themselves, right? Except that SNL *did* have some successful stars/skits while he was gone... and maybe that's what bothers him. I have no idea.
I was too young to be aware of SNL at the time, but I'd really like to see the Chris Guest/Martin Short period, especially. |

Member since: 5/12/2009 | | RE: SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (1980'S) [Netflix / Clearance Question] | FYI - Netflix just added seasons 6 thru 12 of SNL to its streaming library. The episodes are edited, so musical acts are gone (not surprising), but several sketches are absent as well. For instance, the William Shatner "Get a life!" trekkie convention sketch from S12 is among those removed, but Charles Rocket's f-bomb during the goodbyes in S6's Charlene Tilton episode is there.
By now it's more widely understood among us non-industry folks why rights issues/costs would require the removal of music segments, but the absence of so many comedy sketches brings up a new question: are there rights issues with non-music material that would require Universal to get specific clearance before they could distribute it this way?*
*This really is just a question for either Brian Ward or David Lambert - not looking for wild (or angry) guesses from people who still believe the studios do this just to punish fans. |
