Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future
When I was a kid I had all the toys and videos attached to this series, and while I enjoyed the video tapes much more than the actual series I thought this was a blast.  I remember it being pretty damn gritty for a kids show.  Of all the DVD companies out there, it seems like this would be right up Shout's alley.  Does anyone know if they have any plans to release this?

I was a freak for this show.  Still have all my toys.  I've said it before, I'll say it again - if Shout ever DOES plan to do this, I've got a ton of stuff I could contribute for extras!  ;)

I'm amazed that a show with J. Michael Straczynski behind it wouldn't have had some kind of release on DVD...even something cheap and bare-bones.

He took the toy company money and instead of just producing junk to sell the product like they wanted, he made something that's a hidden gem

Needs to be on DVD so people can see it.

I did it for the kicks!

RE: Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future
Say something?  What am I supposed to say?  It's not really on the table at the moment.  It could happen, but there are a few hurdles, for sure.

Captain Power is, presumably, owned by the toy company that created the toys on which the series was based.  And unlike series like Transformers and G.I. Joe, the series was in very limited syndication.  Most of my friends certainly know of the show, but didn't live in markets that had it available.  It wasn't airing where I grew up.  In fact, the only time I ever saw an episode was in a hotel while visiting Disney World.  The fact that it was in very limited syndication doesn't bode particularly well when trying to gauge the size of the fan base, despite being renowned enough to have a poster painted by Drew Struzan!

Secondly, the TV series, while it could certainly be viewed without, was intended to tie in with the toy line.  It was created to be "interactive."  We obviously can't package toys with the DVDs.  And the toys are no longer in circulation.  So we'd have to release a series with the flashing elements intended for interactivity without the ability to participate--unless, of course, you still own a working fighter.  Not saying this is going to detract all that much, but it is an added hurdle.

I've passed along the suggestion and we can definitely look into it.  But that's not a promise of anything, so I wouldn't expect too many comments on the subject from me, personally.  If anything happens, I'll let you know!

RE: Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future
Well, I for one will wait with bated breath for ANY news about this being a possibility! Since Max Headroom finally made its way to DVD thanks to you guys, I now have renewed hope for this one. Glad to hear at least the suggestion has been made.

The toy company was Mattel, btw. The production company was Landmark Entertainment in association with MTS Productions. The show, while being primarily designed to work with the toys, could most definitely be enjoyed on its own. Thanks to the heavy involvement of Joe Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame, it had a wonderfully dark, deep and compelling continuing storyline. He apparently had a 4-year story arc planned out.

I knew a lot of adults who enjoyed watching the show simply because it was a good show. The show was HUGE when it came out, I remember (and still have) many, many news stories about it at the time. Far more than most "kids shows" would get. Most of the articles would start off talking about the interactive elements, but almost always would end by saying "the show itself is actually pretty darn good!"

My understanding is that it wasn't ratings that killed it, it was the failure of the toy line. Since Mattel was the primary backer for the show, once they pulled the plug on the toys meant the show went with it. But the show itself was well received critically, and as far as I know placed pretty well in the ratings throughout most of its short run. It's even been brought back in repeats on specialty channels numerous times over the years, also clearly LONG after the toys were gone.

Sorry to hear you missed out on this one during its original run, Brian. I think it's one you would have really enjoyed. I had the same issue with Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers - GREAT show, but just wasn't on in my area at the time, so while I had HEARD about it and was dying to see it, the chance didn't occur until years later with the video releases.

As I mentioned before, I've got TONS of material that could be used for extras that I would gladly send along. Plus I should note that Chris Young (Bryce Lynch from Max Headroom for those who don't know) featured quite prominently in a lot of the toy commercials! I exchanged a few tweets with him some months back, and I get the impression he would be keen to talk about it if the opportunity arose. And I KNOW JMS relishes the opportunity to chat about his work. From some recent interviews, he's got TONS of interesting tidbits of info about where the show would have gone had it continued.

If there's anything I can do to help make this happen, please don't hesitate to ask.

BRIAN

Zaranyzerak  is perfecftly right . Heck I MYSELF watched the show during the 90's in a rerun , I didn't even know toys existed for it, you can perfectly watch it WITHOUT any of  the interactive toys.  And being only 22 episodes I suppose it could be released as a complete series in one go

you can see this yourself since all 22 episodes are on Youtube (in bad VHS quality however)

Also  Jessica Steen, the lead actress (who is incredibly hot and  could act  btw) in this series was supposedly cast in Armageddon  (the blockbuster with Bruce Wilis)  without any casting or screening because a producer liked her so much in Captain Power.  (even here characters have same first name, Jennifer "Pilot" Chase in CP and Jennifer Watts (who is also a pilot)  in Armaggedon)

Even more her character's death in Captain Power is often compared and considered even more dramatic with the death of Tasha Yarr in Star Trek  (both happened in 1987)

you can read plenty on Wikipedia about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Power_and_the_Soldiers_of_the_Future

The fact the show has such a big Wikipedia page means that there is defenetly some interest in it

Never thought about that character's death in that context before, but it's true. When her character died, I couldn't hold back the tears. Really powerful scene. When Yar died, I was like, "Oh, she died. That was kinda random."

RE: Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future

I absolutely love this show!  I'm a member of its e-mail list.  :)  I once wrote Shout Factory a few years ago after they got Jayce And The Wheeled Warriors to give Captain Power a shot, since J. Michael Straczynski wrote for both shows.  I would also like to cast my vote, once again ;) for Shout Factory to get Captain Power on DVD.  There is an unofficial fan made DVD set, but, I'd like to see a company get it that can get access to writer commentaries, retrospective extras, etc.

The question of the show rights came up earlier.  As far as I know, the rights are still held by Gary Goddard's production company.  Mattel did create a production company specifically as the main funder of the show, but, I don't think they owned the TV show rights.

This was on J. Michael Straczynski's facebook:

Appropos of nothing B5 related as April grows near...if there are any fans of the Captain Power show out there, you may want to keep an eye on Amazon for the next week or so. Just sayin'.

Nope.  We tried and were, sadly, denied.  But if what I know about what they were working on is still true, it should be have a good bunch of bonus features.

They can't because they think it's government secrets not to reveal the sales number for DVD TV Show sets.

Which is strange because record labels have no problem revealing how many units a musician has sold a particular album of.
