With the WONDERFUL, long-awaited announcement of All in the Family being saved from abandonment from Sony, do related Norman Lear shows that are in the same predicament, The Jeffersons, Maude, One Day at a Time, and Archie Bunker's Place have a hope of receiving the same fate??? It would be nice to know if there is any hope. |

I hope Shout! will release the rest of the seasons , if not I 'll never see the rest of it . (French TV has never picked it up) |

Fingers crossed!

The Shout Factory could have come away with a big win by announcing Maude after Bea Arthur's death. (I would rather her still be alive. However, since she's not, we need her on DVD!) |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: The Jeffersons***Maude***One Day???? | JustJim, I'm kinda giggling at the notion that we missed a great opportunity there. It's not like we're ignoring you guys. What part of "studios have to be willing to part with their titles" are people not understanding? The door swings both ways. We have to want it. They have to be willing to part with it. And in the end, if the terms are right, we make big announcements. But don't walk away with some conclusion that because we haven't announced it, we don't want it.
In addition, you should know that it takes months--and, in some cases, years--to sign a deal. We'd have to have been considerably "lucky" to have announced its release right after Bea Arthur's death. It's not like we were holding onto the rights, just waiting for her to die. And, on the other hand, we certainly wouldn't have been able to make a deal this soon after her death, if we'd begun with its announcement, either.
Studios are shrewd. So are we. We all know what we're doing in the negotiation room and, sometimes, that can mean that it takes a little longer for products to make it out to you guys. But, hopefully, they do make it out eventually.

Member since: 6/25/2010 | | RE: The Jeffersons***Maude***One Day???? | Perhaps some of the confusion stems from a lot of titles being lumped together in the minds of people, and some escape the vault while others don't.
For example, The Facts of Life made it out, but the show that spawned it, Diff'rent Strokes, is still MIA.
Or, All in the Family gets back on the schedule, while it's spin-offs, the Jeffersons and Maude are still waiting for further releases.
Maybe people are thinking that if you got one series, you have the rights to all of 'em, but are keeping the others back for some reason. |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: The Jeffersons***Maude***One Day???? | It's a possible thought, sure. I think one thing to take into account is the fact that several volumes of shows like All In The Family and The Fact Of Life had already been released by the time we got them. Clearly, they weren't selling well enough for them, so they licensed them out and made a little money that way. While others are untapped and still potentially profitable for them. Ever since our unexpected success with Freaks And Geeks a few years back, studios have been cautious about what they do and don't release. Sometimes, it's a complete mystery.

Member since: 12/12/2010 | | RE: The Jeffersons***Maude***One Day???? | | It is interesting that a show as popular and influential in its day as All in the Family would not be a huge seller on DVD. Well, it was very topical and while I still remember most of the references when I see reruns of the show, sometimes I find myself scratching my head because I have totally forgotten what political issue they are referring to. If you ever see episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show you will notice that there are rarely ever comments about current events or celebrities or movies, etc. I once read that Carl Reiner did that deliberately, because he knew that in later years when people watched the show they would not get the references. |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: The Jeffersons***Maude***One Day???? | I think there are a couple things to take into account...
1.) The audience. Now, when I say this, I'm obviously talking about the bulk of the audience, not the collector like yourselves. The majority of the audience tuned in every week to see the hilarious adventures of Archie and Edith Bunker when they were free. It was a half hour where people could sit back, relax and laugh. Does that same audience feel the need to own it? Not really. The majority of television viewers are happy with as few as ONE viewing of each episode. With syndication, they get the chance to see the episode (or at least MOST of it, though most folks don't know the difference) again and again. And, again, it's free. It's a completely different ballgame when they're being asked to pay to watch it. And, yes, I realize cable costs money, but it's subconscious. You're paying so much money to see ALL of the channels, not a particular amount to watch ONE show.
2.) The audience, part 2. Because we all buy a lot of DVDs/Blu-rays, we may find this hard to believe, but the majority of people don't spend their Tuesdays in Best Buy or Target or Wal-mart or surfing TVShowsOnDVD.com or the Home Theater Forum. In fact, based on DVD sales in the past few years--especially TV on DVD sales--FEWER people are spending their time in those stores and on those sites than ever. If people aren't cruising the aisles or surfing the 'net, they're probably looking back at All In The Family and thinking, "man, that was a good show. They just don't make shows like that anymore." What they don't know is that seven seasons are sitting at their local Best Buy right now. And if they're not thinking to check, they're certainly not thinking to buy. At least, not yet. Out of sight, out of mind.
3.) A "failure" to a major studio can be a "success" to Shout! Factory. That doesn't mean that we're outselling the major studio. In fact, we're not. We're very much not. Traditionally, each subsequent season drops in sales for a number of reasons. Perhaps you immediately bought S1 and intend to buy S2, but haven't had the time. Or maybe you didn't have the money. And then, S3 comes out. Well, you haven't picked up S2, yet, so you obviously won't be picking up S3, yet. And so on and so on. But back to the point at hand. A studio is charged an arm and a leg to produce a DVD or Blu-ray. Much more than a small indie label like Shout! Factory. Why? Because they can afford it. But if they don't sell roughly 100,000 units in the first year, they've lost a lot of money. And, like us, they can't afford to spend money on something that's under performing. So they give up on it. However, because we're an indie, we get price breaks from authoring houses, etc. So we can afford to sell fewer. In our case, if we don't sell 20,000-30,000, it's iffy that we'll continue.
So when you hear that a studio or a label has abandoned a title, it's simply because the show--no matter how popular it was when it aired on television--just isn't selling to the same numbers. Doesn't mean the show wasn't a success or groundbreaking. It just means people don't necessarily think it's a must-own. Or they don't even know it's available.

Member since: 7/5/2007 | | RE: The Jeffersons***Maude***One Day???? | In my case I only bought season five & six of AITF only after I heard Shout! was releasing season 7. I would probably have eventually gotten around to buying them, but I wanted to get S7 as soon as it came out so I got a jump start. So I think in some cases, a few at least, sales of previous seasons will pick up a little once the collector knows more seasons are on the way. I know that usually doesn't pertain to the general DVD buying public though.
Please bring "Starman" the 1986-87 tv series, Silver Spoons seasons 2 & beyond and Jennifer Slept Here to DVD. |

Some of the best episodes appeared late in its run; the ones with Mrs. Naugatuck are absolutely hilarious. The show was great from the beginning, but it really hit its stride when that old biddy from England showed up. |

I hope Shout can get the rights to release the later seasons, since obviously the current rights owner has no plans to release anything besides Season 1. And Brian, thank you for mentioning the statistics - how Shout needs to sell at least 20,000-30,000 and the majors needing 100,000 sales before even considering future volumes. I always wondered what kind of numbers these TV-DVDs sell. In the world of reissuing '70s and '80s music on CD, the small labels (and even some of the majors) that still do it (US and UK) hope to sell 3000-5000 copies. Those are the kind of numbers needed for reissued CDs. Obviously, TV shows require much higher numbers than CDs of old music. |

Member since: 7/8/2010 | | RE: The Jeffersons***Maude***One Day???? | | Brian, I know you said that each season of a TV show sells less the previous season, which is why many TV shows never see a full series released on DVD. Still, this makes me wonder how "Murder She Wrote" had all of its TWELVE seasons released on DVD. Statisically, the 12th season should be a very small number compared to the Season 1 sales. How do shows like this (and others with 10 or more seasons released entirely on DVD) manage to do it? |

What a waste for these outstanding shows just sitting and collecting dust. I hope Shout,MPI or some company would get the rights and release them and get it over with. |

Member since: 1/10/2011 | | RE: The Jeffersons***Maude***One Day???? | | No wonder why TV-on-DVD sales are crappy. They ignore the stuff that was influential or popular and put out the shows that you can currently see on TV ("Friends", "Two and a Half Men" and all that stuff). There is a market for the older shows, the studios just have no clue. This was why Sony laid off half of its home video staff, they were sitting on their classic stuff and releasing the stuff that no one really truly cares about. That can be another factor: RELEASING INFERIOR PRODUCT. |
