Simon and Simon - nice touch
Thanks SF for the giving us the bonus feature on the Season 5 release. I had been wondering if the reunion movie would ever make it to dvd. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

The Reunion movie is a nice touch, but please put out all seasons of Simon and Simon  Thanks

I am happy to get the reunion movie too.  But FYI: Simon and Simon ran on CBS NOT NBC.  Thanks for correcting the error when you can.

Sorry, because it wasn't my project, could you please clarify?  Where does it say that it was on NBC?

When you click on the Season 5 release link in the first sentence it mentions that it ran on NBC. Not to concerned with that though. Just happy that we are getting the release. Also, very hopeful to get this series finished.

RE: Simon and Simon - nice touch
It was a nice touch to add the reunion movie.. I wonder if Shout! will combine S7 and S8 together for 1 release. As there are not as many episodes for each of those two seasons. Which would make it easier to see it through to the end. In having only two more releases following S5 rather than three. Having said that though.. I don't know how the select program works as far as continuing to release something. If it is going to be based on sales the $49.99 price mark + shipping, may make it tough to generate a lot of sales. Perhaps have a free shipping option or something here. I think the price point is $10 too much here.  Maybe I am wrong, I don't know.

Anyways a big thanks to Shout! for continuing to release this.

I had been looking ahead and thought the same thing about putting seasons 7 and 8 together. It would make things easier to finish this series off. I really hope it sells well enough to get us through.

RE: Simon and Simon - nice touch
If you count the reunion TV movie as two episodes, with the fifth season there would be 26 episodes in total. Will the fifth season set be a six or seven disc set? With the second to fourth season sets Shout! Factory didn't cram too many episodes onto all of the discs in these sets. If the reunion TV movie hadn't been included (I'm glad it has been included in the fifth season set) the 24 episodes probably would have been spread across six discs (four episodes on each disc). With the reunion TV movie being included, could the episodes and reunion TV movie be spread across a possible total of seven discs like this:

Disc 1: Episodes 1-4

Disc 2: Episodes 5-8

Disc 3: 9-12

Disc 4: 13-16

Disc 5: 17-20

Disc 6: 21-23

Disc 7: Episode 24 and the reunion TV movie In Trouble Again ?

I was so excited to see a quick release of Season 5 of Simon & Simon but when I went to order it found out I can't because you don't ship to my country. Why is that? Surely you can simply charge us the extra costs for shipping to specific countries, so is there some copyright reason we can't purchase? Do I have any options when it comes to being able to purchase this series?

Same problem, here . I live in Paris and I had to order Room 222 season 2 on Amazon.com .
I guess I'll have to do the same for Simon and Simon season 5.

Sadly, we can't can't take overseas orders because Shout! Factory only holds the rights to release the series in North America.  You can order a copy on Amazon or eBay.  They'll be happy to ship, I'm sure.

I was surprised to see the reunion movie included on this set, I would have thought it would be included with the Season 8 set since that season has less episodes?!  What made you decide to include it now- some sort of marketing ploy to entice more people to buy?!

Sad to see no extras on any of the Simon & Simon releases, would have been nice to have at least an interview with the principle cast members but I am grateful none the less that the show is being released on DVD.  Keep em' coming Shout! Factory!!

Sadly, because this wasn't one of my projects, I can't answer definitively.  But my understanding is that the reunion movie was sought out over the course of each volume's production and was finally found and put onto the set.  Personally, I'd have waited, as well.  But, as we've learned, there's always a chance the dwindling sales won't let us get to S8.  And if that's the case, I can see why the producer opted to get it out there now.  Better to have it early than not at all, right?

From what I read Shout Factory wont be the only place you can purchase season 5 at. Your also suposed to be able to get it at amazon in the us an canada and on dvd empire. There not listed on their yet.  I wonder if dimple records will get season 5. i got my last 4 seasons in their store. I came across them going shopping one day.

I got to agree about this pre order price. its 20 dollars more than the first 4 seasons. I hope shout factory lowers the price once its is avaible for sale. and the other places that are supposed to be saleing them put them up for sale as well soon. I would like nothing more to be able to go into dimples and buy one off the shelf.

Yes, I offered this suggestion to Brian in another thread, and I hope he takes it into consideration:

Lower the price a bit on your online exclusives, and actually update your upcoming listings, or issues posts, as to when to expect the next season of any series that is part of the online service to come out, as well as to energize the fans to buy the previous sets of any series that's part of said online service, too.

well according to the info shout gave tvshows on dvd.com  there to sale season 5 on amazon us and canada and dvd empire. from what i can tell their is no pre order  on those pages. so i guess they wont show up on those web pages till  the release date on the 20th. the price does need to go down. i sure hope it does.

I do not believe the information about this being available for sale at Amazon, DVDEmpire etc.. is accurate. From what I understand some may be re-selling this on Amazon marketplace and you can purchase it via that method. But, the Shout! Factory website is indeed the only actual place to buy it.  The $49.99  i could swallow a bit better if it included free shipping. The most fair price would probably be the $39.99 price point. But, i am in regardless of price. I have to have it, even if i told myself I would never overpay for my TV product going forward.  :)

Correct.  It is the Amazon Marketplace that will be selling it.  Can't comment on the price, per se, except to say that this price has always been the list price, despite sales prices listed by retailers -- if I understand correctly.  Not sure how or when Shout!/Amazon/eBay would be lowering prices, but that's not up to me.  It's entirely a sales department issue.  I only produce the titles.

Is the boxset indeed a single DVD case with the discs inside, or a cardboard outer box with the slipcases inside? And does the fifth season set consist of six or seven discs?

I'm hoping the copies of the fifth season set on Amazon Marketplace will be brand new and sealed copies.

I think maybe Shout! Factory will release the 3 remaining seasons of Simon & Simon as Exclusives that can be purchased only at Shout! Factory's online store!

Perhaps if Simon & Simon Seasons 1-5 sell, than maybe Seasons 6-7 would be released in 2011, and Season 8 (final) in 2012!

RE: Simon and Simon - nice touch
Unfortunately that's the over-priced copy I've found on Amazon.com. $10 more than the Shout! Factory price, which was over-priced in itself.

My concern is that a lower-priced S5 set will not appear on Amazon.com or eBay. I'm Simon & Simon fan who is stuck at the moment because the set is over-priced, and if you add shipping to the UK on top it's way too much. I want to get the remaining four seasons on DVD, but not when the price of the S5 set is in my opinion too expensive.

And I've still not read any comments on the web about the presentation of the episodes on the discs (menus, whether any episodes are from syndicated masters, how many discs are in the set, print quality of the promos/teasers and the episodes themselves etc.).

But thanks for the answer to my query about whether the S5 boxset is one DVD case (with the discs inside) or a cardboard outer box with the slipcases inside.

Thanks for sharing some observations and comments on the fifth season set. With there being 24 episodes and a reunion TV movie spread over six discs there could be compression issues with two of the discs (four discs with four episodes, and two discs with five episodes each on them (counting the reunion TV movie as two episodes).

Why isn't the price on the amazon marketplace seller the same price as Shout's website like all the other titles?  Why is amazon marketplace allowed to charge 10 dollars more?  All the other Shout select titles are susualy the same on amazon ebay and shout's website.  Is amazon marketplace allowed to do this?

I forgot to ask something else about the picture...is the way the show was filmed (and the way the picture looks) the same as Dallas' look in it's 1986-87 season, like it was shot on videotape (a softer picture quality)?

RE: Simon and Simon - nice touch
Brian, what as the condition of the masters used for the 24 episodes in the Simon & Simon fifth season set? I tested out my copy last week, and agree with the comments made by another poster on the Home Theater Forum, that the quality wasn't as good as that for the fourth season set. I received my copy in the post after reading the other poster's comments/observations, and thought the reason for the drop in picture quality, was because they changed the way Simon & Simon was shot in the 1985-86 season, and that it had the same look which Dallas had in the 1986-87 season (shot on videotape). But no, the way Simon & Simon was filmed hadn't changed. The masters just looked really grainy in parts. I didn't think Shout! Factory's releases of the second to fourth seasons had been digitally remastered, but they looked in better condition than the episodes in the fifth season set.

I was a bit disappointed by the menu screens (the presentation, the absence of the first season theme tune and action scene with explosion before the menu screen appeared), but then realised that as it was a Shout! Select title and not like the second to fourth season sets, that cost cuts may have had to be made.

Is the fifth season set selling well, and is there any chance of Whiz Kids and the 90 minute Simon & Simon documentary, which another poster mentioned in a thread called "Simon & Simon: Season 6", being released by Shout! Factory?

I don't really know a lot about Simon & Simon's DVD releases, as they were Brian Blum's projects.  But I do know he's worked pretty hard of them.  As for the quality, they came from the same source masters, so I can't see there being a huge difference in quality, though I haven't seen them, so I could be wrong.

As for the menus, etc., sadly, titles that are sold through the Shout! Factory Select program must be produced with a limited production budget in order to offset the fact that we're not automatically selling thousands of copies to retailers.  We have to keep them inexpensive to produce in order to make any kind of profit from selling so few copies directly to fans.  Sadly, part of the slash in the budget is in things like menus.

Hope you're still enjoying the series.  And we definitely want to continue!  Fingers crossed!

That's fair enough. It's the episodes themselves which are the most important thing. There wasn't anything wrong with the picture quality of the reunion TV movie, just the fifth season episodes. I'll test the discs out again and see what the picture is like. I had a funny whistling noise come from my DVD player when I tested out the fifth season set (and one or two other DVDs recently, including the 2-disc Piranha DVD). But I think it's coming from my TV or DVD player. You could still hear it after the discs were taken out of the player.

Oh I am still enjoying the series on DVD. It's at the interesting time for me, as I'm curious as to what will be done with the number of discs for season 7 and season 8 (16 episodes in season 7, and 13 episodes in season 8). Also, Jameson Parker shot the John Carpenter film Prince of Darkness between May and June, 1987, when I think Simon & Simon was on hiatus between seasons 6 & 7.
