Marvel Knights
As I sit here, watching the test disc, it occurs to me that I've not yet said much regarding our Marvel Knights Animation titles, beginning with The Astonishing X-Men: Gifted.  Written by Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Joss Whedon and drawn by award-winning artist John Cassaday, The Astonishing X-Men went onto win the Eisner Award.  As well it deserves.

By contemporary definition, Gifted is a motion comic, though not like any I've seen prior to this release.  Unlike DC's own motion comics for series like Watchmen, the animation goes well beyond simply rotoscoping artwork and having it move on hinges.  And you get a full cast and sound team to round out effects.  It literally is a fully-animated adaptation of the comic book.  And the series was co-directed by legendary artist Neal Adams, who absolutely believes in animating Cassaday's art, rather than his or another artist's interpretation of Cassaday's art.  So you won't see anything not drawn by Cassaday.

This disc will be released with a few of the bells & whistles for which Shout! Factory's become known, like a brand-new interview with Marvel's acclaimed Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, who was incredibly hands-on on these titles, and Neal Adams himself.  Adams, in particular, is passionate about this new medium and it really does show.  I think we're going to be seeing some really great stuff coming out of Adams and his Continuity Studios in the near future.

The first of which will be The Astonishing X-Men: Gifted in September.  The disc looks absolutely fantastic and is going out to the plant this week.

RE: Marvel Knights
Sounds cool. Any info on future titles, or are they just testing the waters before they decide?

RE: Marvel Knights
We have several titles coming up in the future; including Brian Michael Bendis'/Alex Maleev's Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D., Reginald Hudlin's/Mark Brooks' Black Panther, and Warren Ellis'/Adi Granov's Invincible Iron Man: Extremis and even more on the way.  I've watched three of these complete series already, each one completely different in animation style and tone.  And each one absolutely fantastic in its own right.  I like what Marvel's doing a lot.  And, as a lifelong comic reader and collector, I'm thrilled to be producing these discs.

Soon, you'll be able to access trailers for Astonishing X-Men, Black Panther and Iron Man on the Shout! Factory Marvel Knights line page.  I highly recommend checking these out.

RE: Marvel Knights

I'm a major animation fan, anime as well as those Marvel and DC animated movies, more so with the DC ones, and I'ms till not sure of what kind of animation you're talking about. I'm familair with the motion comics, for I've seen them on some of the animated movie DVDs, and I have to say I'm not a fan. I would prefer an actual animated series to a motion comic any day. But, now, I see you're telling me these Marvel Knights releases aren't anything like that clunky animation? Would a trailer of one of them, show me exactly what I'm getting into? I'm trying to decide if I want to showcase them on my blog, or not.

Okay, I just saw a trailer for it on Marvel's website and I will admit it looked better than the typical motion comic. I'm still not sold on it yet though, which means I'll probably just have to buy one and see it for myself.

If you don't mind me asking, which trailer did you see?  Each tale is done differently.  For instance, due to the nature of the artwork, Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D.'s animation is way different than, say, Astonishing X-Men: Gifted or Invincible Iron Man: Extremis.
