Room 222 - any timeframe for season 3?
I just finished with season 2 tonight and I'm anxious to at least hear word about the next release, which hopefully is going to happen. Anything to report?

We don't have a time frame just yet.  If we are to release it, I'd expect it in the form of a Shout! Select title.  But, sadly, no news to report at this time.

I believe Brian already covered this in another thread:

Basically he said that titles sold via "Shout! Select" take longer to make decisions in between releases, because they don't have wide distribution for those kind of titles. So suppose if only 800 people buy a particular season of a particular TV show from this new service, that means they'd have a guarantee that no more than 800 would buy the next season.

I only recently bought season two of "Room 222". I missed the fact that it was released in January of this year. That's why I now check out this site for upcoming releases. I would think most shows would have enough fans for some kind of DVD release. Perhaps some less popular shows would merit a release with fewer or no special features and be more expensive. But it would be worth it to have your favorite show to enjoy at your leisure. Many thanks to Shout Factory for stepping in and making this happen!

I agree if some shows don't sell that great, then make them limited editions. I hate having one or only 2 seasons of a show and the remaining seasons don't get released. Thats why probably some don't bother buying , they figure whats the point if you can't complete your collection. I would get the entire series of Room 222 if they were available

I'd never seen this show but was in a 70's nostalgia mood so took a chance on season 1.  So far I've loved it!!  I'll probably get season 2 soon so I do hope the rest of the series is relased.  Were other seasons as good?

I'm sure this has been addressed but what about the picture quality of seaason 2.  Any improvement??  I remember coming home from school in the 80's & some channel was running 222.  I would never watch it because the picture just seemed ugly.  Washed out.  And this was the 80's!!  Disgraceful how studios treat these old shows.

RE: Room 222 - any timeframe for season 3?
The problem with "limited editions" is that that means producing fewer and that's actually more expensive at the plant.  Obviously, producing the set in higher numbers get us a discounted rate.  So creating a limited number of a set that doesn't sell well to begin with really doesn't make sense financially.

Several of us have great love for Room 222.  Unfortunately, our love for it isn't translating into sales.  Very few fans out there seem to feel the need to collect the series, so as of right now, we can't afford to move forward.  However, as we've done in the past, when the economy is on the uptick, we can afford to produce more of our passion projects.  But we need visual data that shows us there's a big enough market out there.

I agree, but thanks to some reviewers at Amazon complaining that season 1 was not remastered to perfection. I think that had alot to do with bad sales. I purchased season 1 and it was fine to me, it actually had a more nostalgic feel to it not being digitally remastered. i plan to buy season 2, but I would like to complete the collection of the entire series.

I want to get season 2, but if there are no plans for the remaining seasons whats the point in having a incomplete series.

can't Shout just release all the remaining seasons, maybe do what WB does with some of their titles and make them as consumers buy them.

I also have to say not all shows have to be restored to perfection. As long as the quality is decent.

RE: Room 222 - any timeframe for season 3?
The problem is all of the people who started collecting last week. They expect everything to look perfect on their 150 inch HD sets. Me, not so much. I'm perfectly happy if a show is complete and uncut. Room 222 looks fine, maybe not like it was shot yesterday but that's okay because it wasn't. I'm so sick of these schmucks who think these shows all have to be perfect color remasters off 35mm negatives. You're dealing with a company like Fox that completely neglects its back catalogue and the only available elements they have for a show like this are dirty 16mm transfers made to 1-inch tape 30+ years ago. I have the episodes from the same elements taped off USA network's run in the 1980s but those are cut by a couple of minutes. At least Shout is giving them to us complete. Its a shame that such a good show wound up with a lousy company like Fox but unfortunately that's the case. And we watched TV looking like this for decades and now all of a sudden we're too good for faded 16mm prints? Give me a break. Hopefully, Shout licensed the whole series and not season by season. If they did, then I'd say we at least have a chance to get the remainder of the show.

FarrahFlawless, it should be noted that the discs WB and MGM are releasing on demand are DVD-Rs.  They are not high-quality presses, but burned DVDs.  It's just not something we do.

RE: Room 222 - any timeframe for season 3?
I know Brian that WB and MGM release them as dvd-r's, But it's better then not having them at all. Im not saying Shout has to do that,Im just saying it's a option that they are giving fans to have something that they otherwise would not be able to get. There are sites like Ebay where the sellers are selling their own recoreded tv movies and tv shows on dvd-r's and people are buying them because waiting years in between season releases, if follow up seasons even get released. So that's probably another reason sales are down you can buy complete series for under 40.00 and obscure movies for 10.00 from these sites. At least WB and MGM are giving fans shows and movies from their catalog and box art, maybe not the best that a retail store would carry, but it beats a blank. I may add that MGM and WB are not releasing syndicated versions, they're releasing the full shows/tv movies as they were originally broadcast so Im glad they are doing that,I got a few movies from them that would have never seen the light of day or on cable. So a few dvd-r's don't hurt. I think it's a smart thing on their part, rather have them collect dust and make nothing, then why not make a Made On Demand store and sell the movie/tv show in it's original broadcast version on a dvd-r and a cheap case and bring in extra revenue. I personally think it's smart and a new way to get some things out there to people who want them without to much cost. But as I said Im not saying Shout has to go that route, Im just saying MGM/WB thought of a cheap way to get alot of tv movies from the past out to fans and making them as they are purchased is genius. I do know some of them are remastered, not all but some that they sell MOD are. The ones I got that were not remastered was like watching a VHS tape. Not the best but not the worst either.

I agree BENCASEY,I enjoyed Room 222 season 1.It had a vintage feel to it not being HD perfect and was very viewable. Why so many people need to see an actors pores and split ends is beyond me. i don't need a show from the 1970's to look like a show on the air in 2010. Also the reviews on Amazon for Room 222 did not help matters, almost all of them were complaining that it was not restored to perfection. I personally gave it 5 stars on Amazon.

It's also a shame that a VERY SMALL number of people bought S2.  We're not holding it back because we don't want to work on it.  We're holding it back because we're going to sell even fewer than we did of S2 and that number was already extremely low.  It really is a symbiotic relationship.

Unfortunately, just because a show is good doesn't mean it translates into sales. Because Fox has done nothing with the show for decades, it is unfamiliar to the majority of people under 40. That combined with the fact Fox never even bothered to clean up or re-transfer the prints, makes it near impossible to market at this point. Shame.

RE: Room 222 - any timeframe for season 3?
bencasey, if you thought the people complaining about the picture quality were morons, you should listen to some of these comments from people who refuse to buy season 2 due of the higher price tag:

From Amazon:

"Eliminating the middleman" doesn't appear to be an advantage to us, as Shout Factory is selling it at full list price. Discounts from Amazon.com and other vendors will not be available."

(And this is how Shout Factory thinks they can boost sales over the disappointing figgures from season 1?)"

From IMDB:

"Shout Factory is worried about slow season 1 sales? Then why is season 2 priced higher that season 1? I bought season 1 (and liked it), but I won't buy season 2 at an inflated price from a monopolistic vendor!"

Anyone who complains about higher price tags for ANY Shout! Select title gets no sympathy from me.

Funny how empowering the internet is, no?  Random people saying random things, regardless of how informed or qualified they are.

We have no control over Amazon's sales prices.  Go to their pages and you'll find that the original SRP is identical to what we're selling it for.  They discount it on their own.  We have to sell the sets at their SRP in order to help make up for the sales lost via a lack of wide distribution.

Once again, we don't generally sell to the public.  We sell to retailers like Amazon in bulk.  When they pay us, we've officially made our money.  And then, they sell it to you for whatever they want.  But when we're not selling sets in bulk, but one at a time, we can't afford to make them that much cheaper.  We'd never cover the cost of production that way!  We're not burning these things on demand.  We're producing full runs.

It just requires a little thought and some knowledge of the industry.

Furthermore, could these be same people who came to these very forums saying, "can't you just make a smaller run?  We'd gladly pay a little more for them, just so that we can have the complete series"?  But, there we go; trying to please everybody.

There are far too many people in the hobby now that started a week ago Tuesday and have no concept whatsoever of price. Those people doing the complaining shouldn't even be in this hobby.

I would happily pay tripple the price of Season 2 to get a copy of Season 3.  I think the series is that good.  This is certainly one of the best, if not the best Television Series that I have seen.  The topics that they tackled 40 years ago are still revelant today.  It is no wonder that this series won an emmy.

If Shout Factory decides to release Season 3, I would be very happy.

I have been very pleased with each DVD Set that I purchased through Shout Factory, and if they release Room 222 Seasons 3 and 4, then they will have a loyal customer for life.

Do you think that Shout Factory could setup a streaming site where you could watch Room 222 episodes online?

I understand that the sales figures for Season 2 were disappointing.  I think part of the problem is that it has been a long time since many people have seen this show, and retro stations like TV Land does not carry the tv show to reintroduce a new generation to this series.  I think if Shout Factory were to stream episodes online, then they could introduce this series to a new generation, and to reintroduce it to the older generation.  Perhaps this could help with Season 2 sales, and create a greater demand for Season 3.

It's a shame season 2 did not sell well. Maybe people don't realize it's a shout direct sale. Does anyone know if season 1 did well? what a shame more did'nt purchase season 2, so many great guest stars Room 222 had. I think it could be alot of people over 45 may not do online purchasing and if they don't see it at retail chains they assume its not available.

Unfortunately, streaming is not an option, as Shout! Factory does not have digital rights.  We only have the rights to DVDs.  If FOX would like to have it streaming, they'd have to either set it up themselves or license that material to us or another third party label.
