I have been a loyal patron of your fine DVD releases picking up virtually all of your DVD releases that you have put out. Recently I've become a member of your fine online community, in hopes of getting news about your future releases of some of my favorite shows. But I must say I'm appalled at what I've read concerning many of the great shows I've purchased from you & their futures! My main gripe is with your treatment of C.O.P.S. & your rationale! You claim it did not make enough money to warrant the release of the remaining 2 volumes? That is just not so and I contend that it was your own greed that caused the demise of that great show! Why did it have to be on three volumes when every other 65 episode or less show has been on two volumes? As one of your competitors has shown with New Adventures of He Man a show that was hated but 75% of the He Man fan base by placing it on 2 volumes you get the whole show on DVD & still make a profit! And I've spoken with 150 C.O.P.S. fans & the popular concensus is had you put some effort into advertising & done the show in two volumes it would have sold in greater numbers! Yet in your greed you released C.O.P.S. on three volumes in the hope of fleecing fans of this great show! And when that backfired you tell the fans "sorry you loose" and use the following excuses over & over again;
01) We are a small company
02) We do not want to loose anymore money
And as of late your two most recent releases Captain N & Super Mario Bros. 3 both have disk issues you have yet to rectify proving you do not care about the fans. So in closing, due to your shady & pathetic business practices you have lost a valued customer & I will never purchase another thing from you again! And I'd also like to ask that you please allow a real studio to handle the DIC library, as it is very clear you do not respect DIC or the loyal fans that love those shows!
Thank you for your time & have a pleasant day!
Sincerely Yours;
Anthony |

The only solution to ensure that any future DVD releases not have ANY errors is to DELAY any discs to a more reasonable time. Take Captain N & The New Super Mario World. They might have some video errors, eventually, so just in case they do, Shout should delay it to Cave Christmastime! |

B.Ward stated prior and after the mario bros 3 release that the master copy for venace menace/super koopa had problems to begin with and wasnt repairable. Barking at shout! for something thats irreversible wont improve the situation for any better, so deal with it. Just be thankful that they're able to get a fix onto somethings.Unfortunately, SMB3 is not one of them. |

From Brian from the Ultimate Warp Zone website on Captain N:
"The edits to which you guys are referring went completely unnoticed by us and our QC staff, meaning they're edits that only die hard fans would see. We don't know the show like you do, so there was no way of knowing that the masters we were given were "incomplete." In fact, DiC still insists they are. I know that you guys probably have video to disprove that, but all I can say is that there was nothing wrong with the masters and we didn't make any cuts or edits ourselves. We worked on this set with the confidence that we were providing you guys with the versions of the shows you wanted and without hiring one of you to QC the masters for us (which we could not legally do), there's no way we could have known. I apologize that the set doesn't live up to your expectations."
Yet they did do a replacement disc for Captain N, so maybe there is still hope for a Super Mario 3 disc. |

I have never seen COPS but wtf is wrong with that guy...Shout! knows wether or not there releases are doing well or not, but it's not Shouts fault if something dosen't sale well. And if a set dosent do well why would the release another volume? And If they had wanted to compress the whole series into 2 Volumes they would have! But they didn't. |

That T-Lord is me & my name is on the post so next time please have the common courtesy to use it! I just do not like being lied to & exploited by a company. If Shout Factory had just used soem money to advertise the C.O.P.S. set & not tried to fleece people into buying 3 volumes they would have made a lot more money. Look at the other studios track records
Madman = M.A.S.K. 2 volumes
BCI = New Adventures of He Man 2 volumes
BCI = Defenders of the Earth 2 volumes
BCI = Ghostbusters 2 volumes
WB = Justice League 2 volumes
WB = Justice League Unlimited 2 volumes
Now outside of Ghostbusters & Justice League there was very little advertising done for these shows but they sold very well.

 Member since: 4/9/2007 | | RE: An open letter of contempt to Shout Factory! | | My brother owns all four dvd boxsets of he-man, both new adventures, and all the she-ra that are currently out. On 2 seperate box sets of the he-man collection, he had two discs that had at least an episode if not more missing, and yes BCI replaced them, but that goes to show these companies producing and releasing 80's/90's toons all have their faults. Also because of the low sales of the fist boxset of New Adventures, BCI actually briefly contemplated not putting the second box set out, but did, although they left off the embossed/raised cover art for that boxset. new adventures is the same amount of episodes as COPS yes, and yes Shout could have put it out in 2 boxsets, i mean even though mario super show was what 12 oe 13 episodes shorter than COPS they still put it out in 2 boxsets. But we may be forgetting something......I dont completely understand the whole sony music/Vivendi distribution change in regards to who owns Shout, but at least before and maybe still is Sony music (BMG) owned if not all at least to some degree, which means they had a stake in Shout and obviously had a say in how it was run (i.e. budget). And this is in noe way faulting B Ward or any other employees of Shout, but when a company is controlled whaetever you want to call it by a big company like Sony, all the big companies care about it making money, and saving money, thats why Shout in the last year has switched to putting cartoon releases in slim cases (a.k.a. giving it the shaft), B Ward has said before he prefers digipack style dvd boxes. Companies like BCI which maybe the same size as Shout, but are not owned by big corporate companies like Sony obviuosly have more of a say so in how everything is done, thats why BCI puts out dvds in amazing looking digi-pack dvds, with great dvd cover art and box art. and they cost bascially the same as the slim casing Shout Factory dvd toons........For example all the he-man, she-ra, new adventures, etc dvd box sets were 6-disc digipack, amazing artwork, you could buy them each in best buy for between $25-30, and when Shout puts out a 3-disc slim casing dvd release its between $25-27. What does that say? its all for the money. |

 Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: An open letter of contempt to Shout Factory! | Guys, you're talking about box sets for series 100x more popular and successful than C.O.P.S. ever was. You're comparing C.O.P.S. to He-Man and She-Ra! Those sets were guaranteed to sell through the roof, because their fan base was so much stronger than C.O.P.S..
But allow me to correct your blatant errors. For starters, Shout! Factory is in no way owned by Sony or Vivendi. We are distributed by Vivendi. There's a big difference there.
Secondly, He-Man's individual seasons were split up into two volumes each. They didn't even provide you complete seasons! AND, to top it all off, you claim that each set could've been bought for $25-30. This might be true, but that's not what the SRP was. The sets were released with an SRP of $49.98 each. Hmmmm... $49.98 x 4, plus a "Best Of" set that only contained 10 episodes released at $24.98 (prior to the seasons, which means those who bought the Best Of re-purchased the episodes on the set when they bought the complete seasons) equals... $224.90. Compare that to three volumes of 4-discs (22 episodes) originally priced at $34.99. $34.99 x 3 equals... $104.97.
Now, allow me to educate you on how sales works. We don't make any money from you. None. Whatsoever. We don't get a percentage of what you spend to buy the sets. A store like Best Buy BUYS a certain number of sets from us at a certain cost. That's where we make our money. Then they turn it around and offer it to you at another cost, adding a certain percentage on for their own profit margin. That's where they get their money. So, see? We've already made our money by the time you've got the sets in your hands. If Best Buy doesn't sell enough of that box set, they don't order more. Therefore, it would be too costly for us to make additional sets if Best Buy's not going to buy them from us. That's why we aren't continuing with C.O.P.S.: The Animated Series.
Look, I love C.O.P.S. Love it! I went out on a limb suggesting we go with that one after our Legends of Zelda set. It was the first set I officially produced for Shout! Factory. And I had big plans for bonus material that would be included on the following sets. But they didn't sell in stores. And stores don't want to buy something from us that they can't turn right around sell. He-Man had the luxury of having a HUGE fan base that every store knew would make them money. It was a no-brainer. Sadly, C.O.P.S. didn't have that kind of staying power.
Brian

And yes you are also right, He-Man does have a huge fan base compared to COPS, and probally all the mario/nintendo toons as well. Sorry for the rant I freely admit it. |

What law prevents you from hiring consultants as some sort of independent contractor on a product-by-product basis? This seems very odd, OBVIOUSLY it would not be cost-efficient, but why in the world is it illegal? BCI utilizes a couple members of the He-Man.org forums on pretty much all their releases in the Ink&Paint brand...

 Member since: 2/10/2007 | | RE: An open letter of contempt to Shout Factory! | This is absurd. First of all, 150 units is NOTHING. The four He-Man sets (not including best of or features) sold 100 times that. Best of She Ra sold 35k. Jem S1&2 sold 35k. Source; http://andymangels.com/HeMan_DVD_Web/SheRa_S2_SS2_l.jpg You sound like the Gargoyles fans blaming Disney for not promoting it. Most DVD sets don't get promoted. Certainly not on television. Do you know how much it costs for a 30 second spot? Why don't you donate to Shout and buy a commercial. Bet you won't see a significant increase in units sold.
Second of all, if Shout Factory released a bigger set, less people would buy it because it would cost a lot more.
Third, to be blunt, your an idiot. I'm sorry but The issues with these discs lay with DIC, and a "real studio" is going to be working with the same freakin masters.
I haven't bought a single Shout Factory release, but this is just insane. Brian seems like a nice guy, most studio guys don't bother to chat on forums, and now I can see why. At first I thought he had a dream job, but [shiite], way some people treat him here, maybe he should spend a few days back in the mailroom!
This is like "Angel Talk" where everybody calls in and bashes Vladimir Guerrero. I don't believe it.

 Member since: 1/20/2007 | | RE: An open letter of contempt to Shout Factory! | Actually I think Brian does a good job, it's just that tastes have changed and there aren't as many COPS fans buying the DVD. The only thing that was glitched by Shout was Captain N but they did the right thing and offered a replacement disc which some of the bigger studios either don't do (Sony) or take years to do right (Warner Bros.). Hobby One Kenobi, don't blame Shout Factory, instead you should blame DiC for not looking after their masters correctly. It even says on DiC's own website that some episode masters are not usable. Shout doesn't have the money to restore them like Warner Bros for their Looney Tunes/Popeye discs.
Look, you are compare COPS to He-Man - it's like comparing Simpsons to Alfed J. Kwak (a juggernaut against a show that has a small fan base). The reason why BCI and WB do 2 Volume packs is because they are larger companies, Shout is small pickings and it would cost more (mind since I am one of the few foreign members of the board, it's cheap no matter how many discs it has) and more money to send back if one of the discs are faulty.
Luckily Shout's next releases (Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Underground, the Nelvana stuff) are going to be of better quality because there are newer shows compared to SMB3, the masters look good according to Brian's post and there is no copyrighted music so these shows are going to be the same as you remember them. In fact you should buy them as I gurarantee that they will be no problems, no glitches, no replacement discs needed and of good quality. Heck, SMB3 is not a good example of quality animation (some episodes are full of goofs) but I like the series even though I have seen it too many times. |
