The rest of Diff'rent Strokes
I wonder that if Shout can now release Facts of Life, then maybe this show, which inspired Facts, won't be too far behind.

RE: The rest of Diff'rent Strokes
I'm hoping the same thing.  However, since Shout! first started releasing Adam 12 it took years for them to start releasing Dragnet.  I hope that won't be the case here, if indeed they do plan on releasing Diff'rent Strokes.

Please bring "Starman" the 1986-87 tv series, Silver Spoons seasons 2 & beyond and Jennifer Slept Here to DVD.

I agree.  I'd love to see the rest of these released.

RE: The rest of Diff'rent Strokes
After reading the announcement about Shout releasing season 1 of Webster... I can't help wondering if this is a sign they'll attempt to continue Diff'rent Strokes as well.  (Or a sign that they tried, couldn't get the rights and settled for the "next best thing"?)  I mean, Webster was pretty much a rip-off created by a rival network due to Strokes' success.  It would be pretty unfair if Webster ends up getting a complete series release (I realize there's no guarantee of this, just speculating) and Diff'rent Strokes doesn't!

I wish Shout would try to get rights to DS.  After all, it was the one that gave birth to Facts of Life.  Although Charlotte Rae only stars in the first two season of Diff'rent Strokes and guest appears in a later episode, it still has the same comedy drama as Facts of Life does.  They don't make these kind of comedy drama shows anymore.  It seems Roseanne was the last show to do this.

RE: Hey B Ward, what about Diff'rent Strokes?
Brian,

Could you guys look into this series or have you looked into this series? I know the delay of continuing The Facts of Life is due to music/licensing from Sony, but what about Diff'rent Strokes? Maybe now that Gary Coleman is no longer with us, and Dana Plato having been deceased for years, is the reason for no more releases...

I'm sorry, but what an asanine assumption! That's not the main reason we're not seeing more releases!

I knew I was making an assumption; however, Gary Coleman's estate could have a stake in the show's DVD run. The series has been stalled since 2006, I believe, so yeah, Sony could have given us more releases since then. All that I was trying to convey is that this may be another hurdle in getting the show completed on DVD.

Normally, the reason future seasons arent't released is if not enough people buy them. I think Sony is to blame for that. I don't think they did anything to let people know they're available.

I totally agree with you, Xaxxar. Sony, like many large companies, tend to think a series like this from the '80s should make the same amount of money like a contemporary series, like Seinfeld. Plus, this show had a large fan base, so a lack of promotion has to be the case. I have the first two seasons setting on my shelf, but I'm sure others fans, who saw these at a store like FYE for quite awhile, are wanting to see more released before taking the dive.

And that's just borderline unreasonable and unrealsitc. They can't expect all shows not Seinfeld or Friends to sell that many. Their behavior and attitude towards classic TV reminds me of Fox's.

Exactly! I don't know if you saw this news story from tvshowsondvd.com, but it really explains situations like this! The reason I ever read this story was because I wanted the rest of Boy Meets World to be released, and it finally will be! I find it particularly funny that Sony could compare a show like Who's the Boss to Seinfeld. Obviously, different audiences there!

RE: Hey B Ward, what about Diff'rent Strokes?
Eh... It's not so much that they think Who's the Boss? should make the same amount as Seinfeld.  It's that they NEED it to.  You guys all have a tendency to look at each show as an individual entity, with its own merits and flaws.  You're right to do so.  But as a company, with a business model that requires you to make money, you can't really afford to think of one versus the other.  You can certainly realistically project fewer units sold on a particular project, but there's still a basement minimum in order to turn a profit.

One thing I've explained in the past, but some may not have seen, is that studios pay considerably more than we do.  They have mega bucks.  And the DVD authors/menu designers/manufacturers/bonus feature producers, etc. know it.  So they cut us--a small, independently owned label--a break, knowing that they can make up for it for what they charge studios like Disney and Warner Bros.  Therefore, we can sell less and still turn a profit.  The studios, however, need to sell a certain number in order to make the same kind of profit.  If a show is only projected at selling 30,000 units, it's not worth the amount of money a studio would be required to spend.  And I hate to burst your bubble, but most retro TV shows tap out at less than that.

So, as you can see, it doesn't really have anything to do with the popularity of the show or even its age.  It has everything to do with how much they have to spend versus how much they stand to make.  Even a bare bones release is incredibly expensive for them.

Thanks for sharing that info Brian.  What about using a different marketing approach for some of these shows. Maybe these companies can see more sales. For example 227 & Amen, if you do grass roots marketing targeting barbershops, beauty salons, Expos and conventions I think that would help boost sales.
