I've found all but three episodes so far, but I'm hopeful the others are lurking somewhere in the huge box of unlabeled tapes. When/if I find them, I'll be sitting down for a Dark Skies marathon at last.
I would pay almost any amount of money to pick up a copy of this show if they release it on DVD...just please keep all the original music intact! I've read that the music was the biggest issue when a release was attempted in years past. I hope something can be worked out, because I remember just enough to know that the music was as much a part of the show as anything else. |

With one possible exception... this next secret title you're hinting I would hope hasn't already been long rumored in a news item on TVShowsOnDVD from their "reliable industry sources". I figured it was ReBoot. You disappoint me, Brian, for the second time. But, I can't stop reading your Twitter page and playing in this sick and twisted guessing game of what BWard028 has been handed to work on. You tease. :)

Anyway... To give the heads up, looks like the two audio commentaries have been approved by Sony. In addition, our archival material was just approved by both NBC and Sony. So expect some cool stuff there. And I'm currently watching all of the stuff we've created specifically for this set. Set to have it all sent to Sony for their approvals by the end of next week.
It's all coming together!

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: Dark Skies | So I've been asked by some about the bonus material one can expect on this set. I've gotta tell you, I've had a lot of fun putting this set together.
For starters, the set had an invaluable consultant by the name of Bryce Zabel. You may recognize the name, as he's one of the co-creators of the series. Not since my work with Javier Grillo-Marxuach (who, coincidentally, wrote an episode of this series) on The Middleman have I had such a pleasant experience with creators so hands-on and excited about making the DVDs a must-own for fans. Although, Patrick Sean Smith and Lloyd Segan of Greek certainly rank up there right now for me, too. I've been lucky, certainly, to work with people who genuinely love their shows. Strange, I know. But it's not as common as you may think.
So the bonus material...
You can expect the original international pilot and a few goodies from Bryce's own collection from back in the day, including original network promos, an original EPK created for the series, the sales presentation that played at the NAPTE conference before the show started airing and more. There are also two commentaries, including Bryce, his co-creator Brent V. Friedman, and the stars of the show, Eric Close and Megan Ward. Megan, may I say, is an absolute doll and I want to personally produce any DVD or Blu-ray she has anything to do with from here on out. A real gem.
In addition to the commentaries, we've put together two new pieces: a 60-minute doc (that can be watched as three separate pieces, if you don't have 60 minutes to spare) called Signal-To-Noise: Uncovering Dark Skies. Again, this includes the aforementioned foursome describing the origin of the series, the casting process, the production of the show and its legacy. I was surprised by how much Sony let us get away with here, as there are no punches pulled. Bryce and Brent are very clear about why they feel they were canceled by NBC (and I believe them), how difficult it was to work with the late, great J.T. Walsh, and more. And Sony let us keep every bit of it. I feel like the true story is out there. Although, as Captain Frank Bach will tell ya', "the truth is overrated." Still, in this case, I feel like the truth is absolutely fascinating.
The second piece we created is the Dark Skies Glossary, a video compendium of all the terms you may need to know, both from real UFOlogy and from the Dark Skies universe as defined by the creators, Bryce Zabel and Brent Friedman. What I thought would be a simple "a Gray is blah, blah, blah...," turned into a powerfully entertaining and informative series of definitions that spawned behind-the-scenes tales.
There are also a couple of goodies not mentioned on the packaging. After all,, in keeping with the tone of the series itself, what fun would the set be without a little investigative legwork, eh?
The DVDs are nearly done. I only have the bonus disc to QC and I've gotta say, it's one of the great joys of my career with Shout! Factory. The people, the content, the chance to work on these bonus features... It's all been a pleasure.
Give it a fair chance. It's not an X-Files rip-off. In fact, I think the show accomplishes more in a single season than The X-Files accomplished in nine and two movies. To this day, Chris Carter doesn't want to come out and give any details, whereas, Bryce and Brent have thrown you square into the middle of the fray with the Hive. They pull no punches. And they do it very cleverly. It's worth your time. And I hope you guys enjoy.

Member since: 11/10/2010 | | RE: Dark Skies | Thanks so much for sharing this info, Brian. Sounds amazing! You don't have to convince me to give it a try. I was watching back in the day, although admittedly, I had a little trouble with the last few episodes, wonderfully produced though they were. ;) And I could not agree more about the unwarranted comparisons to X-Files. Dark Skies is unique in it's own right and imo far more compelling.
Can't wait to see the bonus material. Sounds incredible. Which episodes have commentary? I thought Bryce mentioned on that radio interview (you so kindly directed us to) that there were commentaries on 3 episodes? Did one not make the cut?
"A real gem" is a perfect description of Megan. Talented, funny, and one of the most genuine human beings it has ever been my pleasure to meet. Oh, btw, there is this terrific little series she co-starred in, still unreleased, called Class of '96..... I'm just sayin'. ;)
Thanks again!

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: Dark Skies | Yeah, he may have mentioned a couple of things that aren't making the cut. For instance, he mentioned a 90-minute doc, because I had said that each of our three parts were about 30-minutes long. That was before we knew how much was going onto the disc and it needed to be trimmed in order to fit everything.
We only recorded two commentaries. One, however, was on the 93-minute pilot, so there's that. The other is the finale, "Bloodlines."
She also mentioned Class of '96. I'll have our acquisitions folks look into it, for sure!
Thanks!

Figures one of the commentaries is on one of the tougher ones to watch. ;) Nonetheless it should be very interesting. First and last episodes make sense I guess.
Order has already been placed! (even though Brent Friedman owes me a copy, won fair and square lol - which reminds me I need to remind him about that.) I just don't have the patience to wait, especially after 13+ years.
I will keep my fingers crossed for Class of '96 and look for you to keep us posted on twitter. ;)

I saw it on TVShowsOnDVD.com after I was alerted to it by Gord Lacey and David Lambert. Apparently, they were sent a piece of audio and were trying to confirm that it was a publicity stunt for our upcoming set. They ran the story today (link below) and we've since been sent a ton of emails inquiring about it.
I can confirm that no one here had anything to do with the audio. Was it Sony? Maybe. But they don't really benefit from this set enough to warrant them producing a "fake" telephone recording. Was it Bryce or Brent themselves? Doubtful. These guys are serious about this stuff. This is NOT something I see them doing for a "stunt." All I can say is that this wasn't in any way part of our marketing plan. I mean, how many times have you seen us attempt viral marketing campaigns? I'd say we're pretty up front, for the most part.
So, yeah. There's my two cents. It's an interesting listen. And I can confirm, from having worked with them extensively at this point, that they do appear to be the voices in the tape. But not sure how or when it was recorded.
Regardless... Feel free to have a listen. http://bit.ly/fz97XQ

First off, I must thank you for finally releasing this great series on DVD! I got it last week and I am enjoying one episode per night as we speak.
However, I was disappointed to see that the discs come with no CC, let alone Spanish subtitles...
I thought Closed Captions were obligatory in the States... Please, take that into account if you ever re-release this DVD.
Also, I've been meaning to purchase the Freaks and Geeks and Parker Lewis series next. But I fear they also will not come with CC or any subtitles... Is this the case? Where can I find this type of info for other releases anyway? Thanks!

Freaks and Geeks, however, is captioned, while Parker Lewis Can't Lose is not.

Just out of curiosity, what could determine the decision to caption one (Freaks and Geeks, for example) and not the other... Does getting the script from the producers (thus saving a lot of time) play a big part or am I way off base?
So Freaks and Greeks will be my next purchase (but I know I won't help it and I will end up buying Parker Lewis too ^ ^ )
BTW, while I'm at it, I'll have a go at urging Shout! Factory to please please please consider releasing Night Visions on DVD.

However, I'm listening to the commentary on "The Awakening" right now with headphones on, and I have but one suggestion for future recording sessions: Don't allow gum chewing! (Sounds like Eric Close doing it) Man, that's irritating! |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: Dark Skies | Captions are determined by a number of things. First and foremost would be budgets. Budgets are set by Profit & Loss projections. The bigger the title, the bigger the budget. Although, in some cases, the title may not be huge, but the sales expectations, based on demand, are. Captions and subtitles (especially subtitles) are extremely expensive, so they require a large budget.
As for the gum chewing, we're aware. And the "offender" was asked. It's really all we can do.
