I was a little worried about season 2 when I saw no brick and mortar stores were carrying it and none of the website stores seem to be offering it at much of a reduced price. First and foremost, the sales aren't as high as we'd like to make sure we aren't just throwing money away by producing the set. But, secondly, there are music clearances in the third season that are difficult to get around. Working on it. But it may be a while before the third season sees a release. Be patient, gang!

Just out of curiosity, how were the masters destroyed? Is this a common practice? Do you know, or is it possible to assume that some TV shows from as recently as the 90s have been destroyed? |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: Parker Lewis Season 3 | Snappy Sneezer, back in the day, no one ever anticipated that most television series would go to home video or DVD, because WHO would want to OWN television series (me!!)?!? So the film was usually telecined and the shows were often actually cut on video. The resulting video masters were then seen as the definitive source masters and those were vaulted for future syndication purposes. These are the types of masters we deal with today. The original film material, however, is usually archived deep in some salt mine somewhere (literally) and, often, due to time and degradation or accidents, the original film materials are destroyed. Without that material, new, cleaner masters cannot be created. And creating HD masters out of an SD source is as useful as simply letting your Blu-ray player upconvert your DVDs.
But, sadly, due to both the music problems and the lack of sales of S2, I'm afraid a third season release is not looking great right now.

I have been checking this site since the announcement of Season 1 and have been waiting with baited breath for an announcement for season 3. You would think that this catagory's number of views being one of the most viewed in the 90's section, it might give hope for at least a Shout! Select title. I can tell you that I have never once seen Season 2 in any of the major stores here in Austin. I had to go to a local music store and pay almost $50 for Season 2. I had been all over this city looking on release day until I took a chance and found it at Waterloo.
I don't know. I guess if we think that there is no probability of a release, we can just go to our local cons and give our money to the boot-leggers. I finally caved and bought the 1992 Human Target DVD after no release when the new version of the show proved to be a success.
Its disappointing, but you guys did such a great job for season 1 and 2 and for that, I thank you. Yes, Thank you Brian and Shout! for Parker and Max. You guys are awesome. Signing out.

I take it ongoing negotiations mean Shout! doesn't have the rights to the remaining two seasons and is trying to get them from Fox. Given what has happenned with Peyton Place it sounds like its in doubt the final 2 seasons of Mr Belvedere might make it to DVD.
Sorry to further derail this thread, but since the response was here I has to add my 2 cents. I hope I'm wrong but that's what ongoing negotiations in addition to an email I recevied from Shout! saying they didn't currently have the rights to the last 2 seasons of Mr Belvdere means to me.

Add my vote to the hope (however faint) that Shout will find a way to finish "Parker Lewis". I recall a year or two ago when the "Ironside" fans were screaming bloody murder that Shout wasn't planning to release season 3 of that show because sales of season 2 were so anemic. Yet both season 3 and (I believe) season 4 have since been released via Shout Select. I hope that "Parker Lewis" season 3 will eventually get the same treatment. |

I LOVE Parker Lewis. I bought seasons one and two and between this, Transformers seasons 3 (and the Galaxy of Terror release) I just love the work you guys do at SHOUT!!

In the meantime, I'm going to track down that German release. I'm into the second disc of season 2 of Parker Lewis so I am almost need a new supply of coolness.... :) |

In fact there are German releases of other popular American shows such as Roseanne and ALF that feature non syndicated episodes and unedited episodes while the American releases had edits.
You don't necessarily need to purchase a region free DVD player to play non region 1 DVD's. If your computer has a DVD drive, just get VLC player. It can play any DVD from any region.
Hopefully there will be a North American release of season 3 from Shout! someday but in the meantime die hard fans can always get an imported version. At least there is an option. |

The original music will be there and also the US audio. Because of the NTSC to PAL conversion it is possible that the voices will sound a little higher but most people don't notice this.
amazon.de (Germany) ships to the US but shipping costs 14 Euro. All in all this means 42 Euro or about 60$.
It would be nice if someone from shout! would say if there is any hope season 3 will be relased or not. |

Some of the original music has been replaced on this set. Example in Season 3, episode 1; the song school's out for summer has been replaced with another song. I'm sure there are others. Other things to note; some of the on screen captions have German captions superimposed on the screen. The caption edits are certainly not uncommon and probably wont bother most people (including myself). However if you don't like releases with music edits, I recommend you save yourself some money because you will be disappointed with this set. |

It appears the German company had the same issues that Shout! has had. I don't mind some musical edits if we can finally get a season 3 release here.

I am the one who was responsible for the German DVD release (clearance & pre-mastering). We got the master tapes directly from the Sony vaults in the US. None of these masters had showed any indication of being for syndication. These tapes are PAL and have German and English audio. Afaik the tracks are identical in regard to music used. I can't see why anyone would replace "Shool's Out" with "Cruel Summer" but leave in music from Vangelis or R.E.M. In the end, clearance wasn't a walk in the park, but possible, even for the last title that gave us five rejections before we finally succeeded.
So what I can say is that nothing got replaced during DVD production. If there was ever anything substituted than this must have happened before the show was dubbed for German TV.

Thank you for sharing your experience with your company's release of Season 3. The tape I have is of the repeat of the season 3 opening episode that was broadcast on Fox in June of 1993 (the original airing was in July of 1992, but I did not see this airing). And definitely, "Cruel Summer" was the song at the start of the episode that I taped in June, 1993. So it's not impossible that between the original airing in 1992 and the repeat in 1993, the piece of was music changed. I know when the show was in syndication after it was canceled, "School's Out" was in and "Cruel Summer" was gone. I'm glad to know that you guys were able to clear all of the music . It's too bad that Shout can't seem to overcome the clearance issues that your company was able to navigate successfully. Thanks again. |

I am glad it turns out we have the correct audio track. After all the work spent on it it would have been a letdown to have missed something.
What I'd like to make clear is that we had to clear the rights for Europe or Germany only, which is a little different from licensing rights for the US. For many rights holders their domestic market is what matters and I heard that clearance fees are considerable higher. We're just far away in Europe which makes ome things easier for us. Some are more problematic, e.g. getting right masters or dealing with censorship (you know, we can show nipples, but violence is problematic when it's over a certain level).
I hope that those who have chosen to import the European release enjoy it, even if it's PAL and has German titles inserted. |

The numbers of copies sold to retailers were pretty good. The sell-through to consumers, however, was absolutely not. And we felt it pretty hard in the returns. With that kind of performance, the retailers won't buy any more. And too few sold to make it worth the money we'd spend to clear the music and produce it via Shout! Factory Select.

There's always the option of the German release. I have it myself and can say it is a first rate effort, with all of the original music intact. If you don't own an all-region DVD player, they will play fine on any PC. |
