Well you probably won't have to worry about that seeing as Shout factory has clearly said they have no plans for releasing the show.

I really hope the reasoning is that they are just holding out a little bit and not because of the more adult storylines on the show. I still own my First 2 Sets of JEM released by RHINO, but I hope they don't want to be PC or anything and edit the episodes etc. It would mean poor sales.

I have hopes that the JEM series is re-released UNCUT. I would hope HASBRO etc are very happy with sales and releases from G.I. Joe and Transformers to maybe in the future let SHOUT tackle the release. :-)

This to me seems to be regarding them either making a new JEM show or showing the old show on The Hub this coming fall. Since they mentioned Jem in one of the most recent press releases.

So, B Ward I'm not sure if you work for Shout! or just what your connection is but if you do have some official connection, is there a place where fans should write/email/call to specifically request Hasbro release JEM on DVD?  Should we contact Hasbro? Shout!? Someone else? 

Just thinking with the 25th anniversary of Jem coming up, now is a good time to start a writing campaign. Do something like when people want to save a favorite TV shows - mail them postcards shaped like stars or something...

Do you have any idea in what kind of time frame the "stuffed" being worked might be resolved?  Just curious if we're talking months or years here. 

I bought the new She-Ra DVD yesterday and watching my little girls see it for the first time made me wish for Jem even more!

Having nothing remotely to do with what your all talking about, I bought a actual pictues disc of this JEM charater, back in the early 90's..... Just some nutty thing to do, as I had some extra spending money,. {at the time} when it came to buying records...... Not know, that as of this time, the thing is now, a soight after item!: Ranging, anywhere, from 1k, to 3k!..... How freky can that beb?!?!?... A Fluxk buy, that in the future, it's worth a cool mint... In my p.o.v., of course.... It you all see one, buy it!: You could be buying an investment!....

I knew if anyone could do JEM and the Holograms justice on DVD it would be Shout Factory! 

 Really cool Christy Marx is invloved! I still have the TWO RHINO Volumes released all those years back I think the first set retailed at 64.99 and I bought it at a SUNCOAST for that price.

Will gladly purchase a whole new series set or the whole series as released by SHOUT.

Just curious, I'm not sure how the music rights work for this show but is it possible for Shout! to release a soundtrack from the show? Or would it be possible for Hasbro to release songs from the show through something like itunes if they wanted?

That would be amazing if they could, I really hope Hasbro finds some way of releasing the music, I would think there would be almost as much demand for the music as there is for the show.

This is great news, I can't wait for it to come together. I have the Truly Outrageous UK release DVD which is the without the extended scenes in one long movie. I personally prefer that version.

I never knew they were planning to do a Jem movie, it all sounds very interesting, if there is a script it's too bad Hasbro doesn't at least try to turn it into a comic series or graphic novel.

   I'm sure this has been brought up many times before,  but can you correct the Jem intro for the first season? Rhino had the "Me and my friends are Jem Girls" intro song as the opening of the first episode. Instead of the original "Jem is Truly Outrageous!" Theme. Not to mention Rhino kept mixing up the two intro themes for the seasons they released. I hope Shout is able to put the correct intros back with the correct seasons. Thanks.

    Lastly, I really think the Jem doll box art is the coolest thing to have on the dvd covers. Like the original VHS release of the Jem Truly Outrageous Movie, and the ones that followed. The artwork is really striking. It makes them so believable. Not to mention the background artwork. The confetti, the geometric designs, and the use of colors. I mean, this was the 80s we're talking about.  Glamour, Glitter, Fashion, and Fame

I could be wrong but I seem to recall the Jem Girl theme was used around the third season and yes as a boy it did make it a little harder to be a fan. After all this time though I don't mind whether it's used or not but if they do use it I hope they put it in later on.

I would love bonus cds included with this set, 1 for each band. It would be the coolest bonus feature if the cds came in the "original artwork" like the one Arashi posted of The Misfits album cover from "Glitter N' Gold". If they could come in cardboard sleeves to replicate album covers and have those paper covers slide out like big albums used to have, that would be phenomenal. Maybe they could have us vote on our favorite songs to decide on which tracks to include.

I am curious what kind of packaging will be used if a COMPLETE Series Box Set is released. Would be cool if several designs were created and fans were able to VOTE on the chosen product. I love the G.I. Case, and while TRANSFORMERS is great, that G.I. Case is SOLID!

We first saw Jem in mini segments, then edited together for the TO movie, and were used to that "version". But when the extended version was shown (during Season Two), it provided many missing details to the story, like Aja's harrowing return back to the group in Las Vegas after being locked in a bus luggage panel, The Holograms being awarded at the Battle of the Bands by Mr. Sands and Jerrica and Rio's confrontation with Eric Raymond afterwards. These details are important to the story and should remain intact. This is why I feel the "extended version" should be used in the Shout Factory set. Maybe the edited version could be used if Shout does a stand alone title like their G.I. Joes ones, but ONLY then. But as much we all love Jem, we honestly don't need multiple releases of the Truly Outrageous story.

In Los Angeles, the Jem Girl theme song debuted with Season Three (Talent Search). And when the previous seasons episodes were repeated during then-current Season Three, the newer Jem Girl theme played. Every once in awhile, the original theme would pop up.

Brian, thanks for being available to us Jem fans with our inquiries, even before the wonderful news of a Shout/Jem release. I'm  stoked that you're even listening to our suggestions for the best possible JEM dvds ever. I'm sorry if we get a little finatical, but we've wanted this since forever. While I'd love to have the most extensive JEM dvd collection , the entire series (or third season/part 2) remastered would be great. Unused voice actor interviews, toy commercials and artwork superior to the Rhino sets would be a bonus. That doll box art rocks. Thanks for listening to input from the people who  actually buy the dvds, the fans.

Riot, I see your point concerning the "movie" version of TO. I personnally loved the extended instrumental medley that played at the end (available on YouTube) when it was originally broadcast as a movie on KCOP-Channel 13.

The Rama Llama thing never made sense to me, just that it was just another premium offer when you purchased a Jem toy. I had the Dream Tour cassette along with the accompanying concert program. Also, the audio cassette featuring Who Is He Kissing, Jealousy & Universal Appeal which was not available with any of the dolls. I remember receiving a special Jem post card and mention of a Jem MTV satin jacket offer for the dolls.

Hasbro releasing a Synergy doll instead of a computer playset (ala the Rock Backstager etc) just seemed to reinforce their focus striclty on the fashion doll (little girl) market. The "laptop/tablet" the Synergy doll had was supposed to be how she created her holograms, but then, who exactly is the doll Synergy, if she is not a computer. Maybe this version is a robot in human form, capable of traveling with Jerrica more freely than she could as the big wall unit in the cartoon. I know, I think too much. Sorry.   

@Brian Ward: Please, look into getting episode commentary from Christy Marx and the other writers. The episode commentaries on the Rhino DVD were outstanding. It would be great to have the Rhino DVD commentaries and some new ones for the Shout DVD.

You may have a point about the doll box art. I've imagined it countless times on covers for the doll cassettes, and on cd covers, but as awesome as it is, it may distract from the point that it's promoting a cartoon, not live action. And the right visual is important. I remember seeing the old Family Home Entertainment vhs tapes at video stores in the eighties, thinking about if people unfamiliar with Jem would actually think it was live action, despite the fully animated banner on the box. But the artwork is just so striking, it's difficult not to want it included on the new Jem project. The Jem pic in Shout's New Release section is pretty good too, I guess either will do for me.

Brian certainly is good people. He's a great guy, and he also cares about the fans of the shows. I truly appreciate that.

As for the dvd box art, the more I thought about it I decided a cartoon version would most likely be the best way to go. However, I do hope they would use the original jem doll box are in some way. Like collector card set or something. Stickers maybe. Or perhaps a mini poster.  I really love the idea of having the DVDs look like vinyl records. That's what I was thinking with the Rhino set. Why didn't Rhino do that. I liked their earring look on the dvds, but the record was more obvious being that it's a round disc, like a record baby. Right round, like a record baby.

Also the complete set in something like a pink boombox would be killer. Of course it would have to be neon pink. Maybe Some glitter around the Jem logo. Or glitter letters that say "Truly Outrageous!" In any case, it has to be flashy. That's Jem.

Aside from all that, I certainly enjoy reading all the postings on here for Jem, as well as for G.I. Joe & Transformers G1.

I would guess this is a pre-mature question, but how far are we from seeing DVD release artwork etc? Three months away? I guess I am also assuming this will be released before Christmas season? (Fingers Crossed for a Complete Series Box Set)

Thanks for this piece of info. The Hub isn't available in my area and I did wonder if the old Sunbow shows would be captioned when The Hub aired them. Nice to know that Hasbro/The Hub is trying to make these shows as accessible as possible.

My question for @B Ward: I know Transformers and GI Joe ended up being closed captioned for broadcast on The Hub, obviously long after the DVD sets came out. Assuming that The Hub continues with this standard practice for Jem's broadcast, would they be likely to make the captions available to Shout! for the DVDs? If so, would Shout! be willing to incorporate them?

Could be a bonus cd. There is currently a poll on Shout's Facebook Page asking fans for their favorite Jem/Misfits songs. Hope they can include a whole bunch since there are sooo many to choose from.

The best Jem songs are all from season one and season two. They were well written and extremely catchy. The vocals and production rivaled any 80's pop that was on the radio back then. The non-kiddie approach to the songs is no doubt what helped make a cartoon about a rock star so authentic. This is true of ALL season one and two songs (especially Like A Dream, Deception, Twilight In Paris, Click/Clash, Music is Magic, Winning Is Everything, Who Is He Kissing, Universal Appeal, I Am A Giant, You Outta See The View From Here, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Queen Of Rock and Roll, Rock and Roll Is Forever, Love Is Here, Set Your Sails, When It's Only Me And The Music, She Makes An Impression, There's A Melody Playing, There's Nobody Better, Friend Or Stranger, We Can Change It, Share A Little Bit, Glitter and Gold, It Takes A Lot, We're Off And Running, Can't Get My Love Together). These songs and others  from season one and two have real pop appeal and make you sing them even when you are not watching JEM.. They are Jem classics and alot of them were re-used in season three. The last (3rd) season songs are good but don't compare to first and second songs. And it would be a smashing idea for a cd to include the doll box artwork on the cover and cartoon art for the dvd's.

I'm watching the Jem mini marathon on The Hub right now. Instead of showing the expected "Extended" version of the beginning story (created to fluff out the 90 minute movie into five 30 minute episodes), they somehow crammed in a few of the "Extended" scenes together with the 90 minute Truly Outrageous which ran in only four episodes (a first ever) with the fifth episode being Starbright Part 1(the best episode ever of the series - animation wise).  

Brian: please consider using the plastic box (with multiple inner plastic trys) for the Shout Factory Jem dvd sets. I LOATHE slim cases with the outer cardboard/paper sleeve.  Thank you.

Can't wait to see the finished product. I imagine the packaging will be very colorful.

So do you have to watch every episode of every set you produce for quality control/package write-up, etc?

"Father's Day" was a good episode and Roger Slifer, the writer of that episode, provided commentary for it on the Rhino DVD. It was cool listening to him talk about his analysis of the characters that Christy Marx created for Jem and how he used that to write that episode.

Even though I'd prefer the "Extended Version" (5 episode version) of the Truly Outrageous origin pilot be used for any Shout Factory  JEM Complete Series Box Set or individual Season sets, putting the original 90 minute movie version out as a solo release would be nice to have too. After seeing the movie version again on The Hub, I realized that the story moved alot quicker and the amimation was more consistant and realistic. Those original 5 to 10 minute mini episodes with their own little cliff-hanger along with awesome music videos all edited together is what drew me in way back in the 80's. So I won't hate if the 90 minute movie version get's a separate dvd release. A cd soundtrack with songs from Seasons One and Two would be great as well. See my song preferences on my previous posts.

Hello everyone! I am a nanny for three girls and I was showing the youngest who is eight some of the 80's cartoons on you tube the other day. She was interested in knowing what I watched as a kid. I came apon JEM and about flipped! I was obsessed with it as a kid and it took me back to my youth seeing it again. We ended up watching an episode or two as well. Since then I wanted to see if it had been released on dvd. Through my internet search I discovered that it was released before by..is it Rhino? but it wasn't very good. I then heard about Shout but didn't see anything on the site. Now that I scrolled through this message board here I found out alot! I see that alot of you here are dedicated JEM fans which is AMAZING and you have done alot to make yourselves heard that you want JEM released on dvd. I also saw that Brain from Shout as been hard at work to make this happen for all fans of this show, and that it's still a work in progress, so I want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to the fans who have made their voices heard, and to Brian, Shout Factory and Hasbro for making this happen. I understand this is gonna be awsome, so I have every intention on holding out for this dvd set here at Shout! Thanks everyone!!

I like the songs from Seasons 1 & 2 more because they sound more like real 80's MTV pop/rock that I love (Scandal, Eurythmics, Kajagoogoo, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar). Songs from Season 3, much like the stories and amimation changed. Jem/Holograms' songs relied heavily on ballad-y themes (Flowers In Her Hair, Dear Diary, KJEM etc) which I didn't care for. Aztec Enchantment is okay. Even the Misfits (who had catchier songs) had bad Season 3 songs: I Like Your Style, Let's Blow This Town. It's only because the extra umph/attitude the Misfit put in their songs that they fare better than Jem's. As a fan, I would still purchase a Jem Soundtrack with Season 3 songs included as long as songs from Seasons 1 and 2 were well represented.  

Brian please, put this on the DVD if it's not too late.

In all seriousness though, any chance of that review being added to the Jem DVD box set. I guarentee you, you'll get high sales for including an internet celebrity's review. It worked for James Rolfe for the His Name Was Jason DVD with his review of the Friday the 13th video game and all. So, all you need is Lindsay Ellis's permission. Though, would Hasbro be okay? There's no profanity or anything.

Lindsay plays the Nostalgia Chick. And okay, I get overly excited when I posted and maybe it'd get on or not but still, it'd make a fun bonus feature for the DVD. Like I said, she's an internet celebrity. She works for Channel Awesome, it's a real company mind you. Ask Mike Michaud.

This show brings back so many memories, when i was little i'd watch Jem after He-man on USA,  of course i wouldnt tell any of my friends, it was to girly for a boy to watch lol. Im sure they probably were watching it also!!   I'm 33 now, been watching it on the Hub, really enjoying it! So i popped online to see if it happened to be on dvd since i recently purchased the Gi Joe and Transformer sets you released.  My heart dropped to the floor when i saw the rhino sets and the price they sell for, wow...    So i was a bit sad, but luckily i found this forum and Shout is rocking it once again!!!    So is a Jem release 100% certain in the future? So we should definitely not drop $100-$200 for the old Jem sets?

I would not drop the $100-$200 for the old Rhino issued Jem sets, especially since they failed to release the final episodes on DVD before they lost the rights.

Sorry. Yes, it's tongue-in-cheek at the same time though, it's an honest opinion on the show but it's really just satire. I'm pretty sure she respects the fanbase but people love internet celebrities pointing out flaws in nostalgia. In fact, why do you think people love The Nostalgia Critic?

Besides, is it really different from what the MST3k guys do with the movies they riff on? Especially Gamera?

I suggested it to be on the Jem DVD sets from Shout! Factory because I thought it'd help the sales a bit more. I mean, it wouldn't be the first time. James Rolfe's review of the Friday the 13th video game was included among the bonus features of the His Name Is Jason DVD. It was the documentary on the Friday the 13th movie franchise. You probably know him as The Angry Video Game Nerd.

Plus, with the Nostalgia Chick's review on the DVD sets, you would get her fanbase lined up to buy them.

And for the record, Jem was one of the more huge demand from the fans to be reviewed but the problem was, she never grew up with it and was really relunctant to watch it but she caved in. That and her reviewing style is different from The Nostalgia Critic and The Angry Video Game Nerd. She's more blunt and puts in more satirical elements.

And just in case, forgive if I sound harsh overall, it's just that I have a major distrust of people with nostalgia goggles due to bad experience. Myself and meeting others who apparently hate anyone with the opposite opinion and the sad truth that not everything from your childhood holds up.

My guess is that Jem will be released in November with a complete series set and hopefully will include the songs from the show in a bonus cd to entice buyers.  I also see Shout releasing   4 individual sets with a certain amount of episodes included in each set with the first being released about the same time as the complete set with the other 3 volumes of the set coming out next year about 2 months apart similar to what they did with GI Joe and Transformers and what appears they are doing with MASK.

Oh well, thanks anyway. It was fun trying to suggest it though but still, I'd like to recommend The Nostalgia Critic to you Mr. Ward. You'll find everything here.

Don't worry, despite the material; it's really all in good and trust me when I say that the character does have a huge fanbase. Can I ask a stupid question? What was the point in signing up for news about JEM on dvd when we got the news elsewhere and not from Shout. I thought we would get some special e-mail updates or something. Or even maybe an exclusive bonus for ordering from Shout direct.

I may end up passing on this. I have the first 2 sets and the remaining episodes from air. I was expecting better bonuses. Not worth it for me to re-collect Seasons 1, 2 and half of 3.

I am sooooo excited they are finally releasing Jem completely! I am tempted to hold off on watching the last few episodes so they will be fresh to me when I see them! I have seen them in almost a decade since I still had them all on vhs recoreded of USA cartoon express! Everyone should be happy and not act ungreatful! And the price is awesome! I paid $60 or plus for the 1st And 2nd in 2004 and that was only for 26 episodes, then when all my dvds were stolen a few years ago, I paid $100 U.S. a piece for both sets. To have 65 episodes for $89 is amazing!!!!

Everyone be happy, I remember people selling the bootlegged episodes on message boards in the late 90s for $65!

I got the Shout email yesterday with the Jem Complete Series pic and info. Though I love the artwork on the French Jem dvd sets as well as the doll box art, I think the Shout box set cover art is AWESOME! Going with the very first ever image of JEM coming up with the microphone is very iconic. It's maybe one of the few images that could represent the series as a whole as opposed to pics that fans associate with a individual video/song or individual episode. And as previously posted, it looks different from both Rhino sets (which recycled that same Jem pic - an idea I hated). I can't wait to purchase the Complete Series.

The Jem pilot story which aired on The Hub seemed to be a "mash-up" of both the edited version (Super Sunday version) AND the extended 5-episode version. It incorporated elements of both into a compressed four episode version. Time may have been a factor in this new "Hub" version. Jem debuted on the channel in a marathon which consisted of  five episodes and maybe The Hub wanted to end with a cliffhanger (like the series sometimes does) to keep the viewers watching. That could be why the last episode shown was not "Battle of the Bands" but "Starbright Part One". Just my two cents.

Is there any way to improve or remaster the music from the doll cassettes? They have a bit of hiss because of the lack of Dolby, but they could be a good source for the music pending an upgrade. And in most cases, the songs on the doll cassettes are extended a bit, which adds to the authencity. Each cassette that came with one of three Jem board games each had a third of season's one's songs, but the quality was slightly less than the ones that came with the dolls. The Jem songs which appear on the Dream Tour cassette are probably the best quality available because of the Dolby used.

Can't wait until October.

Brian: Will the Season One set only consist of the five-episode "Extended Version" of  Truly Outrageous or will it appear in smaller fragments (ala Super Sunday)? Or does it have both versions? Because the first season is so short.  

I couldn't be happier about Jem (the entire series) finally coming to DVD!!! I have been a huge fan since age 4 and have been promoting the new DVDs on my weekly Jem radio show as well as sharing breaking news with other fans. Oct 11th can't come fast enough :-) I was really hoping for Jem CDs since the music is such a central part of the show and karaoke songs would be bonus fun for fans. Of course I understand if quality tracks can't be found....still I'd take a so-so recording over nothing. I must say I am impressed at the extras so far and it means so much to those of us who adore this show that such care is being put into it! So THANK YOU Brian and others at Shout! :-) I talked to many fans and took an online poll as far as extras we most want, then emailed Shout weeks ago with that wish list of bonus features but never heard back from anyone. I was delighted that a couple of things we Jem fans voted on having will be included!

I too was put off by the sequence of the Jem opening themes on the Rhino set, but now, like the set as a whole have come to appreciate it. Sure the artwork/packaging didn't thrill me, but the content of the discs made up for it. Yeah, they stopped before releasing Season Three, Part 2, but it's kinda how Shout is releasing MASK Complete Series without Season Two. 

Braxton, interesting enough, the Hub Network has only shown the original Jem opening theme with each episode, including later seasons. They probably understood (or read our posts) about the second theme's less inclusiveness to all of the show's viewers. So kudos to the Hub.

I'm STILL waiting to get the answer from Brian about which episodes (or version/s) of the Season One episodes appear on the first volume of JEM. Initially I wasn't crazy about having the 90min. "movie" version on dvd, but now think it would be great to have on the Season One set, as a option view. It would also fluff out the dvd because Season One is only just five episodes. So it'd actually be worth buying (in addition to the Complete Series) to have both versions on one dvd - and for the first time ever.

      Thank you so much for all the hard work you've done. You really put 100% of yourself into the project. Not to mention putting up with all of our quibbles. LOVE the cover artwork with Jem from the opening intro. Very impressed with what Shout has done so far. So again, thank you for all the work you do.

That sounds good! But anything that's pulled directly from the show will have external sound effects depending on the context of the song. My favorites from the show are All's Right with the World, Can't Get My Love Together, It All Depends on the Mood I'm In, Friend or Stranger, and Time is Runnin' Out is my absolute favorite.

Once you have the DVDs you can extract the audio and with some post-processing it comes out nicely.

Here are two examples-

Jem - Nightmare (RM)
The Misfits - Top of the Charts (RM)
I really want to go through the process of extending the songs once I have more time.

Aww, I'm jealous too! How did you find fans to interview? Wish I could have been part of it. I have so much to say about Jem. She has been such a big part of my life! Now I even have a radio show devoted to all things Jem! (We have been talking about these awesome DVDs a lot on the air) But I think I mentioned that before, lol. We at KJEM would love to interview you, Brian, if possible. :-) Thanks again Shout and Brian Ward for all the work, we have waited so long for Jem to get a proper release! Oh and I love the DVD cover! Very fitting that it be pink and sparkly.
