MST3K episodes from season " zero"
Will ShoutFactory ever release a few of the season "zero" episodes of MST3K from KTMA ?  Just wondering if this would/will ever be an option.  Keep the sets rolling out !

I seem to recall Brian saying in a previous thread that he wishes they would because he'd love to see them, but it's unlikely because Joel and Jim are against it.  So apparently it isn't up to Shout.  Joel and Jim may not see eye to eye on everything, but suppressing the KTMA season is a main point upon which they agree, unfortunately.

Correct.  As you'll see in Joel's intro to The Crawling Eye in the upcoming XVIII, the gang didn't quite feel like they were firing on all cylinders until later into S1 or S2.  The KTMA era, while fantastic in its own right, is not something they'd really like thrown out there, due to quality (or lack thereof) of the formula and riffs of each episode.

What I wouldn't mind seeing is the KTMA host segments as bonus features on episodes featuring movies that were redone by the gang when they were picked up by Comedy Central.... Maybe set it up like the Turkey Day feature on Night of the Blood Beast. That would be cool.

I would agree with the cast about the sub-par KTMA episodes going out, I've watched a few of them, and to be (TV's) Frank about it, they ain't that funny compared to the CN versions.

So there's a very real possibility that I'll never have a pristine copy of "Humanoid Woman" on DVD? That's seriously devastating.

As I said on the MST3K boards, it makes no sense to release the worst of season one but not the best of season zero. Episodes like "Phase IV", "The Last Chase" and "Humanoid Woman" are infinitely superior to snoozefests like "Robot vs the Aztec Mummy", "The Corpse Vanishes" and the Commando Cody shorts.

The first season of The Simpsons mostly sucked; it was a very  primitive form of what the series would become. But it was still released...and it sold over a million copies. Why? Because the diehard fans have a respect for the the genesis of the show. I wish I could say the same for Jim & Joel. I'm so disappointed in them. To be self-conscious about the early episodes is one thing, but to withhold the entire first season, including the much sought-after lost episodes, from the diehards and completists is just unthinkable.

Just tell Joel & Jim there are legions of fans who would love to have them in their collection and Im sure they wouldnt mind the $$$ for sets with them
Id love an 8 DVD set of MST3K with 4 KTMA titles and 4 titles from any other season..
Yes I know it would cost more from the fans but it would be a great investment
Im not a huge fan of Season 0 KTMA but it is also of historic importance just like Season 1

Yeah - y'know even if the KTMA's are slow and embryonic, MSTies will pay for them.  Betcha if we took a poll we could prove it.  We know it's not their best stuff, but the fact that they were riffing unscripted is like watching improv - and that's fun.

You would win that bet...people spent money and did a lot of trading for KTMA episodes..I think it's a gold mine that Jim is sitting on

While there is and always will be a market for anything MST, I think Shout's got the right idea: get the good stuff out first!  Maybe once the supply of license-able Comedy Central and Sci-Fi episodes has been depleted, they can come back and do KTMA.  Remember, for a long time, Season One was off-limits, too.

Or, if they don’t want them in the mainstream, how about downloadable versions available only here and at MST3K.com? Then at least the 'died in the wool' fanatics could have access to them (especially the episodes we can’t find)

Downloadable is a great idea!  It would certainly save on costs for Shout Factory if these eps might not "perform well."

The implication here is that they don't mind releasing them, as long as they're not released on DVD.  I think the thought by those involved is that they simply don't want it released.  Period.  They know you guys are likely to download them, if it's the only way it's available.  They really do feel like their best work was the scripted work done later and that's really what they want you to see.

Sorry, gang.

Oh I think we all get that they don't want us to see them, but I remember hearing the same thing from the Beatles for years... until they finally gave up, said what the hell, they have all the bootlegs anyway, lets releases them formally.

Eventually great musicians release their raw material for hstorical purposes, great authors have their early rough works published.

So I'll keep hoping and making suggestions and maybe one day Joel and Jim will throw up their hands, make like the Dylan or the Beatles and finally lets us have clean, clear copies. We die-hards have them anyway. Except for 3, they are out their in the fan comunity. They can't put the Genie back in the bottle.

RE: MST3K episodes from season " zero"
I would like to suggesting the following: Phase IV is currently released by Legend Films. Maybe the Rifftrax Gang could scribble down the remarks made by Joel, Josh and Trace, then Kevin, Bill and Mike could add new material in the empty spaces since it was mentioned that the KTMA had periods of long quiet due to the gang being sucked into the movie. The cost of the Rifftrax would be higher of course since this Joel/Josh/Trace need to be compensated for their original riffs. Being that Legend Films has the current license, they may also release it as a Video On Demand and eventual physical DVD. In this case the MSTies would get the movie and the original riffs. It may not be the actual episode, but it would be the closest thing to a release we may get at this point. This idea would also apply to Cinematic Titanic. If they can get any of the movies from that year, they could revisit the jokes they originally made then add new comments by Mary Jo and Frank. Just a thought. I'd like to lend my support on the idea of the complete KTMA host segment collection as a series of extras over the course of DVD collections Vol. 20 - on perhaps? I guess I don't know if Jim and Joel are against the whole episodes of KTMA being released or are they also feeling that the host segments are poor too?

I'm just sayin' - the stuff's out there anyway and many of us have already seen it.  We'd just like nicer copies, is all.

That's bummin' to hear, man.  There's something truly endearing about that slapdash season.  I at least hope they're taking the proper measures to preserve those episodes in the digital realm, even if they never intend to release them.  This show is far too important to allow its humble origins to just rot away into oblivion.

Is it at least and I mean at least, possible to just get the host segments of the first episode and only the host segments? They didn't say anything about not showing parts of the episodes...unless the MST3K Scrapbook Tape excerpts count, which were seen on Vol. 15.

Well I definitely hope Jim and Joel come around on this point.  I would love to get my hands on those 3 lost episodes.

Now that I come to think of it, didn't Shout Factory buy the rights to the Japanese versions of the Gamera films?  I wonder how much wrangling they'd have to do to get the American, Sandy Frank-produced versions.  I know that Sandy Frank's representatives don't own the rights to most (if not all) of these film versions anymore.

It would be nice to have these released--most of these MST3K episodes are amazingly good.  The ones I've seen from the KTMA season are also good.

And from the rest of the KTMA season fare, I really liked "Superdome", "The Last Chase", "Phase IV" and "Cosmic Princess".

RE: MST3K episodes from season " zero"
I know that Joel showed "The Green Slime" pilot for a convention last year, so I don't really believe that they will never release these.  I think they would work great as supplemental releases, but I also realize that they would not be very marketable in a set alone.  Also, keep in mind that many episodes are Gamera movies (which we now know are off-limits).  I think the failed TV movies SST Death Flight and Superdome would be easily licensed (good episodes, btw), as well as that Hungarian movie Humanoid Woman.  I think if Brian keeps subtly reminding Joel and Jim how much the fans truly want these, they will cave in sooner or later.
