Silver Spoons

Brian,

This series has stalled after the release of the first season and I know there are many fans out there, like myself, who would love to own the remainder of the series on DVD.  Is this a title you can convince Sony to license to Shout! Factory to finish releasing?  The fans of this show will thank you!!

I'm with you guys I certainly want to see the rest of Silver Spoons too. Of all the 80s sitcoms out there this is probably the one I've seen the least episodes of. It shouldn't be hard to work with Sony to get this one either :) There isn't much in the way of licensing/music clearance either. I thought sure Sony would support it better than they did. I think the most difficult studio to work with getting rights to stuff from is Warner by and far. All the other studios out there are starting to go in slightly different directions...focusing on their movie catalogs more and are at least willing to talk about licensing their TV show IPs to other interested publishers.

Loved this series, have the first season.  Great humor, cool toys, and Erin Gray, woot!  Would be great if Shout Factory could do something with it.  I can't believe series like this one don't sell well enough to continue.  Well, Diff'rent Strokes I could believe maybe, as it hasn't aged as well, but Silver Spoons??? C'mon!  This show was so popular!

This is one of my favorite 80's show, but I don't see Shout releasing it based on the sales of the 1st season.

Also, on Twitter someone from @shoutfactory commented that they look for new shows that haven't been released yet.

I don't, but there was a woman on the Sitcoms Online board named Judith Moorse (something like that). She was involved with the show in some way and at first she said Sony would  released all seasons, but then backtracked and said they decided not to release any after season 1. I don't know if it was because of sales or not.

RE: Silver Spoons
Yes, I know exactly what you're talking about (Judith Moose).  First of all, Sony probably told her they were committed to releasing all the seasons just to get her off their back.  I can't see Sony making that type of committment without knowing how sales would be.  Season one didn't live up to their expectations, but that doesn't mean Shout! can't try to release it.  Shout! has picked up shows that other studios abandoned because their sales requirements are higher.  So far Shout! has announced picking up Facts of Life, Mad About You and The Larry Sanders Show so I'm hoping an announcement for Silver Spoons will be forthcoming soon too.  This might be a show worth looking into releasing a complete series set up front if Shout! does indeed pick it up.  Please Shout!

Silver Spoons would be a perfect fit for Shout!  Shout! already had an interview with David Duclon, the executive producer, on the Punky Brewster sets so I'm sure he'd be willing to help out with bonus material.  Silver Spoons would be a perfect compliment to Shout!'s ever expanding 80's sitcoms (Punky Brewster, Mr Belvedere, Facts Of Life, Designing Women).

Rights To Produce: No Go?

To Whom It May Concern,

I don't know if I should go into detail or not, but what the "hey", right?

There is a lady that comes to the SitcomsOnline Silver Spoons message board that is real nice and has "insides" to the television industry. Especially when it comes to this wonderful 1980s classic sitcom. There was a thread over there and a fan mentioned wanting Shout! Factory to release the remaining Seasons of  Silver Spoons since Sony wouldn't. (apparently due to dvd sales of the first season, I believe, no suprise there... unfortunately.)

Anyway, she has told the fans over at SitcomsOnline that Sony won't give Shout! Factory the "okay" to produce the series. Have you heard anything like this?

If you'd like the thread link, I'd be more than happy to send it to anyone from Shout! Factory, mainly, who would like it. :)

Why does Sony give out the rights to Facts of Life, but not Silver Spoons or Diff'rent Strokes?

Why does Sony give out the rights to All in the Family, but not The Jeffersons or Maude?

Why don't they just open up their whole library, if they have no intention of releasing these shows?

RE: Rights To Produce: No Go?
There are all kinds of reasons why outside companies may not get the rights to shows.  A.) Sony may not have all the rights you think they do.  B.) There may be extensive music clearances, keeping indie labels like us away from the prospect of clearing them.  C.) The projections on those titles may not be high enough to warrant a release from a smaller company.  D.) Those shows may be on a list of desired titles, but not as high as others.  These deals aren't done in one lump sum.  Like any other indie, third-party label, Shout! acquires shows in bunches and nurture our good relationships with the studios throughout the creation and release of those titles.  If we continue to like them and they continue to like us, we proceed with additional titles.  Lots of stuff going on behind the scenes.  Studios aren't to be blamed, just because they're the big boys.  They're a business like any other.

The original sales numbers on Silver Spoons don't look good, even by our standards.  And it looks like music could be cost prohibitive, as well.  Between those two points, I'm not sure it's for us.  But who knows?  Maybe one day, things can change.

I held back on the 1st season cos I wanted the Alfonso years and later. Those were the prime SS years for the casual 80s fans, just like some fans probably held off on the first 2 seasons of Facts of Life etc. Nostalgia buffs can be pretty selective. I know I am.

RE: Silver Spoons
As for "Christmas dreams," I'm afraid the most you would've gotten would be an announcement.  We generally work 5-6 months ahead on projects.

And while it may be true for collectors, selectivity is not how to run a business.  If S1 doesn't sell, the general rule is that S2 definitely won't sell.  After all, in most cases, it's hard to believe that fans would by the second volume of something when they haven't bought the first.  In home entertainment, sales of subsequent volumes always drop off from the first.  And the numbers on S1 were, sadly, too low for us to be able to make a worthwhile offer to the studio and still be able to turn a profit after production and packaging costs.  That might be because S1 was prior to the Alfonso years, but that's a hard argument for the number crunchers who don't know the series.  And it's an awfully big gamble.  What if they accept that argument, go after it and it still fails?  Above all, it should be remembered that we LOVE fulfilling fans' collections, but Shout! Factory is still a business.

Mr Ward please don't take my rambling too seriously.  I was under no illusion that Silver Spoons would be here by Xmas.  Unlike some here who seem to take this hobby (that IS what it is afterall) way too seriously, I accept it for what it is.  I appreciate your honesty and candor in delivering the horribly earth shattering news that a show from my childhood will not be seeing the light of day in continued releases anytime soon.  Now I'm off to go sulk for a few hours and yell at some pigeons

Sorry to harp on a seemingly closed subject, but is it possible Shout! Factory could try to pick up Silver Spoons as part of a package deal with other shows?  You know, get it at a cheaper price to offset the lower sales numbers and higher music costs?  I've heard discussed here the fact that some Shout! releases were part of a package deal, like The Norm Show & Malcolm & Eddie.

RE: Silver Spoons
Creating package deals is always an option, and honestly, a preferred option.  But it masks the fact that we'd still have to release the show with music costs and low sales expectations.  It really still comes down to the fact that the first season didn't sell well.  So it really doesn't matter how many other titles we pick up along side it, if the costs of music clearance and production outweigh the projected sales, it's really not a good deal for us.

Not saying Silver Spoons isn't a future title to keep an eye on, but I am saying that in this economy "Joe DVD Buyer," as opposed to "Joe DVD Addict"--like us--isn't buying shows like this.  And we very much need them to.  Because there just aren't enough DVD addicts out there to cover these costs.

RE: Silver Spoons
Thanks for the response Brian.  Maybe someday soon we'll have a sudden surge of Joe DVD Buyers buying a few thousand sets of Silver Spoons S1   I guess I won't be changing my signature anytime soon.  Oh well

Please bring "Starman" the 1986-87 tv series, Silver Spoons seasons 2 & beyond and Jennifer Slept Here to DVD.

All of us fans have waited long enough now. Enough said!

RE: Silver Spoons
But Shout! Factory has the "power of release" for the shows the big studios want them to release, is that true?

If that is the case, then you have the power to refuse some shows. Oh man! That is so Great! I would just say, "I'm not releasing this title until we get this other title" if you have that kind of power.

You would rule the world of TV shows on DVD- this would definitely bring the big studios like Sony or Fox to their knees. Ha Ha Ha! An evil, fiendish plan if I do say so myself.
